Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

... Oh, I have sort of got one. Large text in an outdoor setting. Not to the point that I'd be actually scared, but I find some large words on big signs or the sides of buildings weirdly compelling, and I can't stop staring at them.

CarrieMoonbeams · 24/06/2021 14:26

Derelict houses, particularly when the roof's gone and there's a tree growing up through what was the middle of the house, aaargh!

Also big industrial-type pipe things (ducts maybe?). I used to work in a building where the mail room was down in the basement, and there was a long corridor to get there, with these big horrible silvery pipes at the ceiling. They had a sort of papery look to them, so not metal pipes as such. I literally couldn't look up at them, I scurried along with my head down. Bleugh.

@SmallGreenStripes

My husband taking his belt off and sliding it through the loops. He has never been anything but kind and gentle, I have no memory of a belt being used on me in the past but every time I get a horrible shiver of dread and fear.

He tries to remember to take it off in the bathroom now!

OMG, same... makes me feel physically sick. My reaction to it stemmed from The Accused, a film with Jodie Foster. It's such a stomach churning sound.

My other stomach turner is touching terracotta or unglazed pottery, such a horrible sensation and I can only do it if I'm wearing gloves or have wet my hands. Makes me a delight at a pottery cafe!!

Flyinggeese1 · 24/06/2021 21:15

Time40 can you put Chinese Dragon dance in please?! It’s the actual ‘dragons’ that freak me out. As if no matter which direction they’re facing or moving, I’ve been seen and ultimately they’ll come towards me for some horrible reason.

Not a phobia but almost as bad.

Lampzade · 24/06/2021 21:16

Jingling of coins. Sets my teeth on edge

Lampzade · 24/06/2021 21:21

Helicopters flying near my house
Walking across bridges with cars driving underneath- makes me anxious

sqirrelfriends · 24/06/2021 21:54

Tinned mandarin segments. Elderly aunt serves them with jelly and ice cream and I haven't the heart to say they make me feel sad inside.

AutistGoth · 24/06/2021 22:14

Tall, slender church spires. Especially of they are dark in colour. They are so sharp and I think I'm subconsciously afraid of being skewered on them.

Whenever I see a tall, dark, slender spire I feel as though my eyes are somehow drawn towards it. Like they compel me to look at them for some reason.

imacuddler · 24/06/2021 22:22

I hate my oh coming up behind me to give me a cuddle when
I'm washing up.
I feel so vulnerable with my back turned but trust him at all other times. I don't think it's anything to do with him.
I think I feel terror Confused

Mummatron3000 · 24/06/2021 22:26

I sometimes see images of X-rays of children’s skulls through my job and it utterly freaks me out that you can see the adult teeth up in the jaw, waiting to emerge. Don’t google it, it is really freaky!!

Keepyourdistance000 · 24/06/2021 23:39

Level crossings and railway tracks, especially when the live rail hisses when a train is approaching but is not in sight.

NigelWithTheBrie79 · 24/06/2021 23:47

The theme song to Orange Is The New Black.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 25/06/2021 00:01
@ThreeImaginaryBoys I don't think buoys freak me out in the same way, but now you mention it I can see the similarities Confused
@Chocolatebuttercream Oh dear, have I given you a new phobia?!
@MotherofPearl @3ormorecharacters You have all made me feel less weird about my peculiar terrors :)

De88 · 25/06/2021 00:22

Children singing gives me the utter creeps... thank goodness no school gatherings of any kind involving singing over the last year!

SecondCityShark · 25/06/2021 00:26

Paper straws and mushrooms. With the later, they give me the creeps so badly I can't even look at them. Vile things.

SecondCityShark · 25/06/2021 00:34

Seeds inside melons and butternut squash make me shudder. i can'r eat watermelon for this reason. It creeps me out.

Deseeding pumpkins and squashes makes my fingers feel really weird and uncomfortable. Makes me cringe. No idea why.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/06/2021 00:44

Yes, children singing is awful.
I also hate audience participation in things.
It's just so cringe, pantomime is my worst nightmare.

FictionalCharacter · 25/06/2021 02:19

The High Level Bridge over the river Wear in Sunderland used to scare the crap out of me. No other bridges, just that one.

Drag queens.

People letting their tongues protrude out of their mouths.

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 25/06/2021 03:09

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS

I didn't say which one because a lot of small children have it and I don't want to upset anyone whose DC does.
Is it the pineapple hairdo, where parents scrape what few strands of thin hair their children have into a pathetic single pigtail or pineapple on top of the unfortunate child's head?

This hairdo also gives me the chills, bleurgh.

To the PPs who said Anchors/Buoys I raise you bulbous bows, as in the bow end of a ships hull. They are terrifying to see both beneath the waterline and also out of water.

I didn't realise I had this feat until I started working in a dockyard. Not as an engineer fortunately Grin.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/06/2021 10:54

Things out of water that should be in water eg ships in dry dock
Things in water that shouldn't be there eg cars in water.

Aaarghhhhh yes. Terrifying.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/06/2021 11:06

@time40. Oh please do.
You’ve got to put zombie pylons in there. though. 🤣🤣🤣I won’t be impressed if you don’t

Mochudubh · 25/06/2021 11:38

@pickingdaisies

Coffee shops with no windows, tucked into a corner inside other shops, like Dunelm mill (there's no way you'd get me in one of them for a coffee). And I love a coffee shop normally.
Yes. Local Debenhams cafe used have windows looking out over the rooftops then they had a refurb and panelled it all in, I never went there again.
