If you shop in charity shops. What do you buy?

I only ever look for books and dvds. It's made me wonder am I missing out on anything else? I'm not a clothes person, well I wear them obviously but I hate shopping for clothes. Now I'm wondering what else I might be missing out on.

What do you buy from charity shops and have you found any bargains lately?

I look out for pyrex cookware, vases or planters, picture frames, jigsaws, good quality childrens clothing for my granddaughter, and toys for her play corner at mine. This weeks bargain was a Conran shelf unit from Myton for £30. Currently on sale in John Lewis for £299.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 08:43

i often buy birthday cards there

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 09:12

i believe there are no car boot sales currently, people often buy up from charity shops and resell in car boot sales?
although i guess they could resell on ebay or similar.

I love mooching round charity shops! I get toys/games for my classroom, bags and tops for me. I’ve bought shirts for DH, duvet sets, clothes for the kids-especially shorts for DS. DD buys lots of books.

DreamingofBrie · 20/06/2021 09:20

I love charity shops. I recently got:

  • brand new White Stuff casual top for £5
  • swishy long skirt for £5
  • two tops for work from Wallis and Next, both £4

I volunteer in one and we make sure that only good quality, saleable stock goes on the shelves. Everything else is either donated to local families in need or if it is unusable, sold to the rag man.

Also bought dinner plates. They are mismatched, but they are older and a smaller size than many of the plates sold nowadays, so they make portion control easier!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/06/2021 09:23

Books, and the occasional item of clothing or toy for Gdcs.
Found a Disney princess castle for £8 a few years ago, and they still play with it at every visit.

I don’t look for adult clothing but a dd finds fantastic dresses in her local charity shops - barely worn or even still with the label on, e.g. £60 ones for a tenner or less. She buys hardly anything new.

QuadrupleCarbs · 20/06/2021 09:24

books mostly and I buy the majority of my clothes and shoes when I need them from them, but occasionally plates, kitchen stuff etc

dontgobaconmyheart · 20/06/2021 09:24

Only books really, and decorative objects very occasionally (the odd decorative basket, maybe a jigsaw puzzle , a vase etc).

I used to buy clothes a lot but never wore them or reached for them so stopped. I think buying them for the label or them being a bargain, as well as 'for charity' inclined me to pick items up I don't really love and wouldn't have bought otherwise. The majority of charity shop clothes i owned went back to the charity shop unworn or worn once along the line.

Whattheduck · 20/06/2021 09:29

Books
Clothes I recently picked up a lovely monsoon skirt for £2 and a new look coat for £4
My Best Buy was about 10 years ago a small Gucci bag that was £10 my Dh found one online and it was around £700.

Arbadacarba · 20/06/2021 09:30

I'll buy anything that takes my fancy. Books, CDs, DVDs and clothes most often, but also kitchenware, furniture and electricals on occasion from shops that do them.

Random things I've ecently got: a brand new corkscrew for 50p to replace ours that was broken, a small, heavy casserole dish for £1 and a decorative storage box for £1.50.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 09:38

it is difficult now you cannot try on, although a local one to me is allowing this,
and if and when you take them back they are a bit snooty, awkward, but i try and be brave.

Frownette · 20/06/2021 09:42

Recently I have bought a very pretty seasalt dress and a couple of glasses for a friend.

Mabelface · 20/06/2021 09:45

The majority of stuff in my house is from charity shops. I hate paying full price when I can get better quality much cheaper.

notacooldad · 20/06/2021 09:49

I think many if you have better charity shops near you than me!
Our charity shops are full of Matalan, Primark and George priced at virtually the same as the original price tag!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 20/06/2021 09:56

I got a sewing bag for 20 quid which was full of hand dyed silk threads and gold needles and Japanese beads. There was probably 300 quid's worth of crafting stuff in it.

I liked the bag and thought 20 quid was a bit steep for it but it had lots of pockets and zip up bits for project work and I thought I'd give the contents to the school as I already had a lot of embroidery thread. The school got my boring old DMK threads, obviously and I purr over the glorious fancy stuff that is now in my craft box. Too pretty to use, really.

I still get a thrill when I pick up that bag. Someone who really understood craft owned that kit and I like to think that it found it's way to someone who really appreciates it.

Frownette · 20/06/2021 10:03

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria that's amazing

Enjoyingmyciffee · 20/06/2021 10:07

Clothes. I’m not a clothes person either, just need to be covered and comfortable Grin would resent spending lots of money on new stuff that I’m really not bothered about.
Books and toys when the children were small.
Household things (curtains etc)

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2021 10:09

Kids toys. I've picked up a scuttle bug thing for £2, one of those expensive latches boards for £2, a very expensive sensory toy in brilliant condition for £3. Coats when the babies were small cos they wear them so little.

Books and occasionally clothes

Zenithbear · 20/06/2021 10:46

I buy good quality, sometimes designer clothes. Preferably with the tags still on.
Mostly for occasion wear like weddings, special events and holidays. Happy to pay a reasonable amount but I've never paid much and had CK, Ted Baker, Jane Norman, lipsy etc dresses all for about a tenner each.
Also some brilliant leather motorcycle jeans for £35.
I tend to buy all my basic clothes - jeans,
t-shirts etc brand new as by the time these items reach the charity shops they're usually past their best.
Jigsaws
Dvds
Christmas cards
Occasionally gifts, chocolate etc.

timtam23 · 20/06/2021 10:53

I love shopping in charity shops, most of my clothes and what's in my house probably comes from charity shops!
A couple of independent ones near me have a £1 rail and some of my nicest clothes have come from those.
Most of the DCs' clothes, baby equipment and toys have come from charity shops. Less so now that they're a lot older but when babies/toddlers their clothes were in as new condition from the charity shop. Many of the clothes were 50p each or 3 for £1
Jigsaws...so expensive to buy new but only a pound or two from the charity shop. Children's games also.
Kitchenware especially Pyrex glassware and kitchen utensils. We use a drip filter coffee maker and if these break I always find the next replacement very cheaply in charity shops, I think people buy coffee pod machines and give the older larger machines away.
Craft supplies mainly knitting yarn (I have bought some beautiful designer yarn for almost pennies), cross stitch kits often completely unopened, cross stitch supplies including frames and silks, fabric including vintage fabric and vintage crochet lace/old linen tea towels/old tablecloths etc.
Shoes I'm not keen on buying unless they're new or barely worn but I've had a couple of really nice pairs of shoes from charity shops. Also a couple of lovely leather handbags I used for work as they were big enough to hold everything, one was only £1.50.
I have had to stop buying books as we have so many of them but almost all of the DCs' baby and children's books came from charity shops.
Small electricals, a DAB radio, hair dryer, hair straighteners all a few pounds each.
I also buy clothes to cut up for the fabric, mostly items from the £1 rails, and 100% wool jumpers to unravel for the yarn - I've had some cashmere and cashmere blends this way and it's much cheaper than buying the yarn itself.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 11:04

i went to a town where a colleague lives and bought a lovely m & S top from a charity shop, at work she whispered to me where did you buy that, i lied and said M & S and i wondered if it was hers?
i would not admit to work colleagues as they are weird about these things.

Hen2018 · 20/06/2021 11:31

Everything except underwear and shoes!

Best finds over 20 years have been toys, kids clothes, paintings, loads of books and an accordion!

Also (from BHF) a sofa that lasted 15 years and a tv cabinet (still using it).
