What's the tooth fairy protocol when the DC has lost the tooth?

FGSWhatNow · 19/06/2021 15:00

DS's wobbly tooth finally fell out... but he doesn't know where it is. He discovered it was missing part way through lunch, so I think he may have swallowed it.

Does he leave a note for the TF and explain? (I wanted to nip out and get a little fishing net for the TF to leave him, for retrieval purposes, but DH won't let me Hmm )

Also, what's the going rate per tooth these days? (It's DC1's first tooth so I'm guessing there's been inflationary pressures in the tooth-harvesting business since I collected 20p a time 30 years ago!)

We have tooth pixie dolls that the kids put their tooth in and put in the front room window so the pixies can keep an eye out for the tooth fairy for them (sometimes this takes a few days Grin).

When a tooth is lost they write a message on a little piece of paper, roll it up, and put it in the pouch instead. This notes often include pictures.

We do £2 for a well-taken care of tooth, sometimes in a range of coins.

Watto1 · 19/06/2021 15:10

The tooth fairy leaves £1 here. Dd lost one in the car and one fell down the loo. Both times she left a little note for the tooth fairy under her pillow. The tooth fairy was fine with this and still left the usual £1!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 19/06/2021 15:13

You want to establish a place that is not under their pillow. Been there, done that. My children are now teens. I wish I had known to have the tooth fairy visit at a different rendezvous point.

My friend has a tooth fairy door that she put on the landing skirting board and they leave the tooth their in a pouch and in the morning a £1 coin is waiting in the pouch instead. Have 2 pouches, one that always has a £1 coin in (get a stash of them) and another for the tooth so you can swap it over easily rather than trying to wrestle the tooth out on your way to bed. Always set a reminder in your phone to be the tooth fairy that night.

For missing teeth, write a quick note explaining. They still get the money though. Don't say she finds it on the off chance your child finds it unless you are happy to go with she must have dropped it from her over full bag. Also have a reason as to why the tooth fairy collects them and what she does with them.

We wrote a letter to tooth fairy, who wrote a nice note back to say that dont worry, she was glad to not have to lug it back to fairyland as it was very heavy!

FinallyFluid · 19/06/2021 15:25

I wasn't very popular when DS was at primary school, (now 20) he was an only so the tooth fairy used to leave a £2 coin and left a £5 note for the first one.

One of the Alpha Mummies took me to one side, to have a word. Grin

Thanks for the suggestions. Love the idea of a tooth fairy door, but I may have left it a little late to source one before DS goes to bed! DS is gutted he lost it, he's been doing a fingertip search of the lawn in case it fell out while he was playing football, but I really do think he ate it. The little bloody chomp marks out of his sandwich seem to suggest that... Envy

i’ve kept all my kid’s lost teeth (i don’t know why, it’s a bit rank really but i had no idea what to do with them!) so when my youngest boy lost his tooth a few weeks ago and then lost the lost tooth i found a similar looking one from the tooth pot and made a big point of ‘finding’ the tooth. he was chuffed, bless him! we give £10 for the first tooth, and £5 for every tooth after that.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 19/06/2021 15:32

DS wrote a note when he lost one that had fallen out at school. Made me laugh as we'd just done his reading and I'd signed his reading record,he asked me to sign the tooth fairy letter in case she didn't believe him!!

That's so sweet RockingMyFiftiesNot Mine always asked if I thought the tooth fairy would like their note.

Maybe a stuffed animal could guard the letter for the first one near a window and things like a tooth fairy door or doll could show up later, maybe explained they start to appear after the first tooth?

playinthedarkness · 19/06/2021 15:49

Help him write a note to the tooth fairy explaining what happened then under pillow and the tooth fairy might leave £1 and a small thank u note back Wink

spiderlight · 19/06/2021 16:31

@FinallyFluid are you me?! I had the same going rate and an Alpha Mummy (albeit a very nice one) asked me about it. Apparently our boys had been talking and had come to the conclusion by themselves that they must have different tooth fairies - separate rounds, like postmen Grin

PottingCompost · 19/06/2021 16:42

Our policy is that the loser of the tooth writes a little letter of apology, in their best handwriting.

Notes/teeth earn you £1 each!

UnalliterativeGeorge · 19/06/2021 16:45

£5 a tooth?! 50p a tooth in this house. Granted this is mostly because between two children we currently have 6 wobbly teeth at the minute and I'd be skint if they all fell out at once Grin

We had a palaver with the last tooth as DS put it under his pillow and tooth fairy took it away then in the morning he cried because he'd not shown DH (who was on nights) so he wrote a letter to the tooth fairy who wrote one back so he could show him that. Lesson learnt to check if he wants to show anybody before it goes now!

Nathalie1975 · 19/06/2021 16:47

We used to put a grain of rice under our pillow as a substitute for the lost tooth.

FGSWhatNow · 19/06/2021 16:52

Ooooh I love the idea of a different TF round if the kids at school have a different going rate!

We told our DD that the tooth fairy couldn’t come in her room due to COVID, so she places the tooth in a little box outside her bedroom door. Her first tooth was £2 but the others have been £1.

LadyMargaretBeauforte · 19/06/2021 17:35

We had this. We left the tip of a cotton bud, rolled into a tiny ball , in a tissue , under the pillow and the tooth fairy fell for it. She left £1. She still to this day does not know we tricked her.

BertieBotts · 19/06/2021 17:37

I got DS1 to write his own note and then I kept that as a keepsake rather than the tooth :o It's very cute.

DeathMetalMum · 19/06/2021 17:41

First tooth £2 and then 50p afterwards. A special 50p with Peter rabbit or Paddington etc if possible.

Dd2 lost one of hers and she wrote a note. DD2 lost two teeth in one day recently!

@spiderlight

This one had a heart of gold wrapped up in barbed wire, you had to dig really deep to find it, some people were afraid of her, but she was lovely.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 19/06/2021 20:03

Make sure you set an alarm early when the tooth fairy needs to visit. You'd think you couldn't possibly forget but....

Also, if you do forget, palm the money, pretend to look for it and drop it down the side of the bed or in the pillowslip.

Amiable · 19/06/2021 20:11

DS managed to swallow not one... not even two, but THREE of his teeth! A note worked very well each time!

Feather12 · 19/06/2021 20:14

Yes they accept notes. DS once asked if he could keep the tooth to “experiment” on.The tooth fairy left the tooth and a shiny gold coin.

Dee1975 · 19/06/2021 20:21

A note as suggested sounds like a great idea. I’m pretty sure she will still leave money for being brave in losing first tooth.
In this house she gives £2 for the 1st. £1 for the rest. Apart from the nights when she was really busy collecting other teeth and wasn’t able to make it, she will leave then £2 to make up for being a night late ….!
