What to do/eat/drink in Liverpool?

Just DP and I going for a couple of nights next month as we have a hotel voucher which needs using.

We’re early 30s and like good food, fancy cocktail bars, live music, shopping, activities like bowling or cinema. How should we spend our time? DP is also a Liverpool fan but not fanatical about football so is a stadium tour worth it? Or is there something better to see?

Ooh definitely watching this thread! We have one day in Liverpool with DH and 3 dd in the summer hols!

Probably echoing other people but great places to look for food are Bold Street in town, or outside of town, there is Allerton Road or even Lark Lane. There is a bowling alley in Clayton Square which I've forgotten the name of but that's a cool place for a visit if you like bowling. It's right in the centre of the town centre so then you could go shopping and/or sightseeing and/or eating/drinking easily around there too.

For cinema, FACT in town is my fave for its independent artsy feel. However the Odeon and the Everyman (both in town) are both also great.

For shopping, the whole town centre area is great especially Liverpool One. Out of town the New Mersey retail park is good. For interesting smaller shops then Allerton Road or Lark Lane.

I virtually never eat out in town now but can recommend a load of places on Allerton Road/Smithdown Road: Maggie Fu, Eastern Diner, Millon, Istanbul, Maray, The Tavern Co, Portland Street, Three Piggies, Evil Eye, Black Cat...

See if you can get a booking here.

You go in through a secret door via an old red telephone.

Pricey but amazing cocktails for a treat.

I really like fazeda if you like meat.

Baltic markets are good for food.

Great homer street market (greatie market) is good for a walk round and wasting a couple of hours.

Albert dock is gorgeous.

Formby beach and the Anthony Gormley statues are gorgeous at sunset.

@SaborDeSoledad & @Jahebejrjr I am gutted to hear about Host. Who ran the kitchen? Can we mount a campaign to release the recipes?!

SaborDeSoledad · 18/06/2021 21:12

@Verbena87 and @Jahebejrjr I'm in, but only if they bring back the pork belly!

SaborDeSoledad · 18/06/2021 21:13

I've tried to replicate it and it's never as good - definitely need the recipes!

stressbucket1 · 18/06/2021 21:14

Baltic market area and ghetto golf are well worth a visit and not far from the Pullman Hotel either. Nice walk to the Albert Dock with a lovely bakery and coffee place called the rough handmade bakery. and Liverpool museum too. You need to book the museums now but they are free.
Stadium tour is really good and you get to visit the museum there too with lots of trophys to look at! Take a walk around the ground see the murals.

Hope street area with the cathedrals is also lovely with some other nice places to eat and drink there. Moose Coffee is good.
I wouldn't head further out to Allerton/Formby/Lark Lane if you are only there for 2 nights. Plenty to do within walking distance.

Jahebejrjr · 18/06/2021 21:15

I would love the recipes. I think the same people still own it but it is more like a bar that serves food now.

OnTheBoardwalk · 18/06/2021 21:22

I had to travel to the passport office the other week and was surprised at how busy it was.

It was sunny and even with the booking systems there were small queues outside the museums

Albert Dock itself felt confined and cramped but the other areas were absolutely fine

If you plan and book early for the places you want to see you'll be fine

ChocolateRiver · 18/06/2021 21:30

I would echo loads of what’s already been said. The alchemist is good for cocktails too and the Bridewell is interesting for a drink. It’s a small pub that used to be a jail. You sit in the cells.

MayIDestroyYou · 18/06/2021 21:30

Host gone? Sad

Awful news.

(But the Gormley statues are on Crosby beach.

AppleDumplin · 18/06/2021 21:35

Food wise - you are spoilt for choice. Try Bold street for casual dining and a pick from all over the world. Vietnamese, Greek, Lebanese all very good.
There's also food markets on Duke Street and the Baltic area, which are fun and will have good drinks to choose from.
Slightly higher end would say check out Castle Street.
The Albert Dock is great day or night. Lots of food and drinks choices - (I like Madre). There is also Tate Liverpool which is always good. You could walk around, there's the Maritime museum and at the Pier Head is the Museum of Liverpool.

If you get out of the city centre and weather is good you can't beat Sefton Park, or Calderstones Park which has a great cafe and good ice cream!

Slightly different to the obvious beatles and Matthew street area which is a bit tacky, there are so many independent shops and places to eat and drink.
The Bluecoat has shops and a cafe. There is the Walker Art Gallery and gorgeous Central Library.

Enjoy !!

treehousethunderstorm · 18/06/2021 22:21

Definitely Mowgli like pp have said, it is next level. I like the one at the top of Water Street.

lovelychops · 18/06/2021 22:35

Agree with the shouts for Mowgli it's delicious

LockingJay · 18/06/2021 22:38

There is a newish place on Duke Street called Pins Social Club. It has bowling alleys, cocktails and pizza. All good!

VeniVidiWeeWee · 18/06/2021 22:39

For astonishing architecture you need to go to the Philharmonic Rooms. You will need an escort to visit the Grade 1 listed men's lavatories.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2021 23:10

Moose coffee on Hope or Dale street for pancakes.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2021 23:11

I love Liverpool. Going on Monday and can't wait!

Toddlerteaplease · 18/06/2021 23:12

@scryingeyes just turn the T&T off. You can still check in. Mine has to be off for work. And never goes back on.

CommanderBurnham · 18/06/2021 23:13

You can hire electric scooters to get around.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/06/2021 06:25

Nooo, that was one of my favourite hotels to stay in. (Not when it was the actual bride well, though!)
newnortherner111 · 19/06/2021 08:25

Visit the Cathedrals, which are only a short walk from each other. The statues on Crosby beach are only a short train ride away.
