Researching whether to get Ewan deluxe, Ollie the owl or just a white noise machine. Lots of mixed reviewed out there. What would you recommend? If you would recommend just a white noise machine can you please say which one? TIA

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for white noise machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best white noise machines page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

We have a MyHummy - DS is now 2 and still loves his “hummy bear” at night. You can choose between 5 types of sound to be either continuous or to sense when they’ve woken up and kick in then. It’s indispensable here!

LegoLovin · 18/06/2021 14:31

I've tried all sorts and my favourite is Marpac Rohm. I've found with the teddy types they're either not continuous and stop after x amount of time or they're not loud enough

My ds had one with music/rain/heartbeat as well as one with ceiling projector. He watched the light totally fascinated.

I just used a Spotify playlist as I already had a subscription. We could then just play the ones he liked the best on repeat throughout the night.

Bigoldmachine · 18/06/2021 14:37

My hummy

4yo still loves hers and it was so good we bought one for our second child too.

GreenCrayon · 18/06/2021 14:37

We just use an Alexa echo dot in the nursery. It has the ability to play a huge assortment of sleep sounds which means you can find one that best settles baby.

Plus as baby grows and no longer needs a white noise machine it continues to be useful.

ApplesandBananas21 · 18/06/2021 14:37

This is the one I have, 20 sounds, can play through the night.
Would be lost without it

I have one similar to this and it’s brilliant, plays all night and lots of different types of white noise and sounds

The best thing is that it’s portable so we take it on holiday and can easily put it in an overnight bag

An old phone works as well if you have one lying around. There a a lot of white noise type apps out there, some of them free.

SBAM · 18/06/2021 14:41

We have a marpac too, well we have three - one for each child and one for us because after the first six months of baby being in with us we were so used to the white noise we couldn’t sleep without it.

bloodywhitecat · 18/06/2021 14:42

I just ask Alexa to play white noise on loop.

ItsSnowJokes · 18/06/2021 14:45

We had a Ewan, totally useless for our child but then it was the foo fighters that got her off to sleep 😂

Idonotwantitthanks · 18/06/2021 14:45

We just tuned a radio in between 2 stations to get white noise

Peach01 · 18/06/2021 14:48

I use a 10 hour YouTube video. Works like magic.

jamsandwich1 · 18/06/2021 14:49

Ewan is shit! I bought an avantek white noise machine off Amazon (I think £30?) and it’s great!

SemiFeralDalek · 18/06/2021 14:53

This.

There's also YouTube videos which are 8/10/12 hours of different white noises sounds.

Blackopal · 18/06/2021 14:55

My Marpec sound conditioner is still going strong after being used every evening for ten years.

Figmentofimagination · 18/06/2021 15:00

We use this app on an old iPhone. Set it to air conditioner and leave it playing all night.

DS also has a musical hippo from summer infant, that plays music for 30 mins. He's learnt to turn it back on when he wakes in the night.

Ewan is lovely but didn’t cut it for sleep thief 1. I used a free app on my phone (actually until my friend recommended it I used the actual hoover for a couple of hellish nights Blush). When sleep thief 2 came along we got Alexa to play white noise. When they got a bit older we found rock music worked well (my friend swears by Whitesnake as the best baby sleep aid!)

I have a my hummy and a Ewan and they were both too quiet for my daughter. I downloaded a free app on an old iPhone and it plays continuously for 8 hours.

FluffMagnet · 18/06/2021 15:18

My hummy. I find it pretty loud, we don't have it on its highest setting but can still hear it in our room when it is in with DD. She's now nearly 2.5 and asks for it if not on. We use the 12 hour setting, and she will wake up as it goes off in the morning. We also have a Sleepy Bunny thing that plays lullaby music and lights to help her drift off.

eleanorsos · 18/06/2021 15:19

We got a LectroFan white noise machine - quite pricey for what it is and not exactly pretty but it does the trick. We started off using Alexa but every time the internet lagged it would stop/start which is not what you need in the middle of the night!

ShirleyPhallus · 18/06/2021 15:28

The suggestions of Alexa / YouTube are great until your wifi cuts out in the middle of a very raucous dinner party and your child is woken up because of the noise and you can’t tell anyone to bloody shut up and are willing the wifi to come back on quickly….

That’s how we ended up buying the portable white noise machine!
