White noise machines for babies

Researching whether to get Ewan deluxe, Ollie the owl or just a white noise machine. Lots of mixed reviewed out there. What would you recommend? If you would recommend just a white noise machine can you please say which one? TIA

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for white noise machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best white noise machines page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

Dream egg white noise machine about £20 off Amazon. Plays all night, is portable and has different music and white noise. Awesome for travelling with

The only thing that worked for us for the first six months or so (!) was the actual Dyson running right next to him. We recorded the Dyson and he was having none of it. tried all sorts of recorded white noise, rain sounds etc. to no avail. We eventually managed to wean him off it to the point where he would sleep to Jean-Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene' or Gregorian chanting (God only knows how we worked this out) but only if we started him off on the Dyson and then gradually moved it away once he was asleep while increasing the volume of the music.

@ShirleyPhallus

The suggestions of Alexa / YouTube are great until your wifi cuts out in the middle of a very raucous dinner party and your child is woken up because of the noise and you can’t tell anyone to bloody shut up and are willing the wifi to come back on quickly….

That’s how we ended up buying the portable white noise machine!

That's quite an unfortunate set of circumstances! You got very unlucky.

I think our WiFi has only ever cut out once in all the years we have lived here and fortunately that was pre baby. If it happened now I think we would just play the sounds through the app using data on our phones but it's definitely a good reminder to have a back up plan.

To be fair that's super specific Grin

When our WiFi has gone down, which is thankfully rare, I'd use YouTube on my phone Grin

Don't bother with a machine unless you know it works for your baby. There are some white noise videos on YouTube you can try first.

We got a Ewan, waste of money and made no difference for baby

Another vote for the avantek from Amazon, lasted years so far!

It is Grin But bitter experience. You obviously haven’t had the “she’s such a poor sleeper only the exact wavelength of white noise will work and I must create the exact sleeping conditions to the precise moment”. That, plus adverts to that seem to interrupt every YouTube. I once left DD watching baby sensory so I could have a shower and came back to find her watching an ad on how to invest in Bitcoin Grin

He's 4 and a half and "is such a poor sleeper only the exact wavelength of white noise will work and I must create the exact sleeping conditions to the precise moment" still apply Grin it's why it took 3 years for me to even consider another Grin🙃

So many helpful suggestions to look into so thank you. I have heard of the my gummy one but couldn't seem to find many reviews on them and there seems to be quite a few, is there a certain one those of you who have them recommend?

Dgs has a Henry hedgehog, he’s started to fake cough to start it going again Grin

My youngest is nearly 12 and such magical machines either weren't around then or I didn't know about them. The hairdryer worked a treat for him.Grin
