toyota aygo or fiat 500

Looking to buy a car this afternoon and have a choice of these 2, both automatics.

Toyota Aygo. 2012. 1.0ltr 36,000 miles on clock
fiat 500. 2010. 1.3ltr. 42,000 miles on clock.

The Toyota is £500 cheaper. So I guess on paper looks the better deal but the Fiat looks a bit bigger, maybe a bit nicer to drive? Any thoughts on reliability?

I'd go with the Toyota personally.

My mother has a Fiat 500. It's been OK for her but it's not as fun to drive as the looks would have you believe, if that makes sense.

The Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 are all the same car, and it's primarily a Toyota product so even if you bought the Peugeot or Citroen version you'd still be getting a well-engineered, reliable car. They're fun to drive, too. Buzzy and zippy, lots of character.

Used car prices are bonkers at the moment, aren't they?

I had a 2014 automatic Fiat 500 three years ago and I despised it. The dualogic gearbox was not responsive so the car would scream along in the wrong gear for way too long before it would go up one.

A mobility scooter would have pulled away from traffic lights faster. It also couldn’t handle any sort of incline so I started avoiding the quickest way to work because of a busy junction on a hill. I’d have to put it in manual and crawl up in first gear because in auto, it just wouldn’t go anywhere.

I traded it back in after 8 months and took a financial hit.

Had a Fiat 500 for 4 years and really loved it. Then I swapped it for a 500L, it was awful! Full of design faults and I couldn't wait to get rid of it. I drive a Peugeot now and it's brilliant!

I have a 500 and I love it!

I wouldn't pay £5k for one that's 11 years old though. That's shocking.

Susie477 · 16/06/2021 14:34

The Toyota is a better car in every way. As others have said, the Peugeot 107 & Citroen C1 are both exactly the same car, made in the same factory but with different badges.

The Skoda Citigo is also excellent.

MHIssues · 16/06/2021 14:48

Found a second peugeot 107 for 3.5k but it's 2008 and 39,000 miles on the clock.

Is being 4 years newer and 18,ooo less miles on the clock worth an extra 2k? Because the 2014 peugeot with 22,000 miles on the clock is 5.5k?

I just looked on Arnold Clark - huge dealership, and they have lots of sub £5k cars which are not as old. The 500s range between 2012 and 2015 when you search £4K - £5k. There must be some dealerships near(ish) that you can use for a simulate guide?

MHIssues · 16/06/2021 14:59

Ok, have just looked at arnold clark as well and only small auto car is a 2012 toyota with 55,000 miles at 5.5k?

roobicoobi · 16/06/2021 15:05

Ah sorry, I missed that you were looking for an automatic! I didn't filter auto

MHIssues · 16/06/2021 15:16

Yeah it seems to stick loads on the price and seriously cripple the choice

Toyota. Fiats are known to be unreliable.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 16/06/2021 15:18

Toyota is a more reliable brand, but these are tiny cars and I'm surprised at how expensive they are! Why is it just between these two?

Dozycuntlaters · 16/06/2021 15:27

I've got an Aygo, it's ok, reliable, cheap to run, tax and insure etc. The only downside is as it's only 1L it doesn't have much power. It's fine once you're at speed and can feel quite nippy but the pull away is pretty crap. That's the only down side of it though, apart from that it's a great car.

Ozanj · 16/06/2021 15:28

@MHIssues

Fiat is £5000. Toyota is £4500

Just found a Peugeot 107, 2014, 22,000 miles on the clock for £5500?

Toyota or Peugeot
FelixBrown · 16/06/2021 15:30

I paid £5000 for an auto fiat 500 a few months ago. I love it! It's absolutely fine on hills, and my route from work goes up a really really steep one.

Those mileages for either car are very very low. For comparison, the mile on my 2008 Mini is 97000 and I've only put less than 2k miles on it in the 8 months I've had it.

What's the service record like for the older one? At that age, it's the condition that's most important not age. If the older one is in good condition with a service record, I'd be tempted to go for that as it's probably not worth an extra 2k for being newer with a lower mileage, they're both well under average on the mileage.

Also look at the MOT record on DVLA website. You can see the pass/fail record and any advisories for the last few years, along with the mileage at each MOT - proves the mileage is genuine and also different usage patterns.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/06/2021 15:38

Another thought, is the choice and price better if you look at a bigger car?

Eg Polo, Seat Ibiza, Golf. When I was looking at a car, there were absolutely loads of those for hardly anything, but I'd set my heart on a Mini by then, so that's what I got.

captainprincess · 16/06/2021 15:38

I have a Fiat 500, love it, but I would probably say the Toyota as well. In the last year it's had a new battery/head gasket/starter motor alternator and steering rack Hmm

Nat6999 · 16/06/2021 15:52

Have you looked at Ford Fiestas? There is a 1.0 Litre engine available & they have more room both in seats & in the boot. Fords are cheaper to maintain & parts are cheaper.

CormoranStrike · 16/06/2021 15:55

Toyota abd Peugeot are fundamentally the same car underneath.

I’ve got a five door version of the Peugeot and it’s surprisingly good.

Returnoftheowl · 16/06/2021 16:26

My previous car was a fiat 500 and never had any issues with it, was reliable and no issues at MOT time. I've changed to a 500X now and that's caused me no issues either.

PurplePansy05 · 16/06/2021 16:27

Another vote for Aygo, a lovely, reliable little runner!

newnortherner111 · 16/06/2021 16:33

I've driven Fiat 500s as holiday hire cars. They see a hill and slow to a snail's pace.

MHIssues · 16/06/2021 17:43

Ended up with a skoda fabia. 29,000 miles, fsh, 62 plate. Bit over budget at 6.5k but it looks lovely, drives nice

The 2008 to 2014 Peugeot 107 is a total different car isn't it? Think 2014 is a face-lift model.
