If you live in a holiday destination....

Inspired by the seaside thread. So many people are opting for U.K. based holidays this year, I don't think I realised how many have an annual abroad holiday until now!

If you live in a holiday destination (seaside, city or country) what would you want visitors to know?

I'll start with... disposable BBQs are dangerous if buried under the sand. They'll stay red hot and burn or cut some poor unsuspecting person's foot if trodden on. Pop them NEXT to the bins on the promenade and everyone else on top in a stack. They can go in the bins when cooled properly by the next morning.

@MiaowMix even if I needed to go my body wouldn't allow me to become a beach sitter, my brain would shame my arse 😆

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/06/2021 00:35

Probably already mentioned but:

Stop feeding the seagulls.
Don’t put your disposable bbq in the bins either. They’ll catch fire
The roads here are the same as the ones where you live. Try not to aimlessly meander into the middle of them without looking just because you are on holiday.

MiaowMix · 15/06/2021 00:43

@awaketoosoon I'm too uptight to even contemplate such a thing, I feel ashamed just even thinking about it 😂

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 15/06/2021 00:58

Try not to leave your common sense at home. Especially when it comes to busy seaside towns and roads. It's stressful enough trying to navigate through the town centre, without having the added worry that some muppet is meandering along the footpath whilst stuffing an ice cream and stepping out into the road without even looking first.

Those signs on the harbour that say don't feed the seagulls. They are there for a reason you know! Don't feed them and then go home bitching and moaning cos a seagull swooped down and nicked the rest of your fish and chips or the ice cream from out of your hand.

Be courteous in supermarkets or convenience stores. Just because you are on holiday most of locals aren't so often can't get into the shops until later on and there's nothing worse when all you want after a long day at work is a cup of tea and a couple of slices of toast only to find all the bread and milk is nearly all gone.

NewYearNewTwatName · 15/06/2021 01:11

MiaowMix no need for the Hmm You could have just left it with the paragraph you wrote. I as I was completely unaware of the south of US changing the words meaning. (yes I googled to fine out about the racist connotations)

and I won't use it again, ok?

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 15/06/2021 01:17

Also if we do end back up in a full lockdown again, please don't come flocking over to the seaside and fill up every space possible on the beach because believe it or not Sea and sand doesn't suddenly stop Covid in its tracks.

Also that warning sign telling you not to jump off the harbour wall because there's a danger of hitting the hidden rocks that you can't see down below is there for a reason too! There's nothing worse than shredding half your leg on the sharp jagged edges of a rock

Lastly if the bins are full, take your half eaten food and rubbish with you. Don't just dump it on the floor next to the bin. Not only does it encourage the seagulls to dig through fish and chip and pizza take aways boxes to get the food out.
It also looks un sightly too!

Womendohavevaginasnick · 15/06/2021 01:24

Also please don't jump into the waterfall plunge pool.
You'd be surprised how often it happens.
Usually after a few beers too.....🙄

JanuaryJonez · 15/06/2021 01:28

This thread is very negative considering a lot of people will opt for UK holidays.

I live in Brighton. Welcome!

All I can say is (as PPs have said) please dispose of your BBQs properly and safely and make sure you clear any trash from our beaches.

Then just have a really great time!!

TyrannosaurusWrexit · 15/06/2021 01:31

There is a fast road between two attractions. Please check for cars before crossing it. Particularly if you are not that nimble. The bendy bit where vehicles coming from both directions cannot see you is far from ideal. I nearly got a large group meandering across today.

Divineswirls · 15/06/2021 01:36

Teach your children how to respect their new surroundings for when they're older and will holiday without you.

Don't get annoyingly loud and drunk if you're in a residential area with the windows open.

Be careful in the sea and watch your children like a hawk. They can go under in seconds. Seconds.

Remove your rubbish. Why are we still telling people this

ChoCoCrazyCat · 15/06/2021 02:17

All the people saying "can't wait to go abroad"...there are fed up locals there too!Spare a thought for those of us whose home towns have become package holiday/stag/hen do destinations. I'm sure all of you on this thread are lovely, but to the people who seem to turn feral on holiday:

-Yes, alcohol here is cheap. That doesn't mean you have to start drinking at 10am, binge drink all day and night, vomit/pee/poo outside people's houses and fight/shag in the street.

-Jumping from your hotel balcony into the swimming pool isn't a good idea and will likely end with you being hospitalised. No, it's not as nice a hospital as what you're used to in the UK.

-Similarly, if you fall out of your window because you were so drunk you thought it was the door, don't try to blame the hotel for having the windows "too low".

-The local police might not see the funny side of your Borat style "mankinis" if you wear them outside the resort i.e. in the town where people live, work, take their kids to school etc.

-Yes, you're paying customer, putting money into the local economy, we need tourism etc etc. BUT that doesn't mean you're entitled to do as you please and be aggressive to locals when challenged. There was well established, family-friendly tourism here before you decided it was "the new Magaluf".

Seriously! You want people to limit how much milk & bread they buy?

I didn’t know that either and have used the word in all innocence. I won’t any longer - every day’s a school day.
LizzieSiddal · 15/06/2021 07:06

Most of the above plus

Stop walking down our driveway in order to get a better view. It’s private property and when I tell you that, stop looking at me like you don’t understand.

cocoloco987 · 15/06/2021 07:08

We've had more problems since all the locals started descending on the outdoors as all the indoor stuff was closed (tourist city but with lots of green space) than we ever had with the tourists. Hurry back please!

Claphands · 15/06/2021 07:09

Don’t leave rubbish on the beach and spend money locally

MiaowMix · 15/06/2021 07:24

@NewYearNewTwatName Glad to educate (not being sarcastic) re the origins of the word. You're totally right, no need for eye rolling really is there?

Meanwhile, tourists must now limit how much milk and bread they buy at the supermarket? And visit farm shops at specific times? Mmmkay then.

MrsDThomas · 15/06/2021 07:27

Snowdonia here.

You do NOT bbq on people’s land. It may be a right of way but the signs are there telling you not to do it. You char the land.

Wild camping is a no-no. Again, its private land. You do not leave your cheap tent and camping chairs as you can’t Be bothered to take them home.

Don’t leave your rubbish anywhere, especially on a mountain. Your alcohol cans and bottles on the peak of Snowdon really shows your mentality and disrespect towards the place.

Those who do this are cunts. And very hated.

PrimeraVez · 15/06/2021 07:31

Please respect local laws and local culture. Wear your bikini on the beach by all means, but please don't go to the mall with your arse hanging out. People aren't staring at you because omg you're so hot. It's because you are being disrespectful.

COVID exists here as well. Please apply the same common sense that you would at home when you are on holiday.

cocoloco987 · 15/06/2021 07:38

Wild camping is ok here (Scotland) and was never a problem. Again it's the locals trying out new past times while everything is closed, not the tourists that have been leaving their rubbish and equipment sadly.

Kinsters · 15/06/2021 07:49

Wow, some real charmers on here. Limiting how much milk and bread you buy when on holiday 🤣🤣🤣

I live in an international tourist destination - heritage city, beaches, cruise ships. Nobody here seems overly bothered by tourists. I think it's one of those perculiar uptight British things...

makingmyway10 · 15/06/2021 07:51

How horrid some people are! You do not own the rights to an area you are lucky enough to live in!
I live in an area that is world renowned for its beauty and am happy to share with considerate visitors after all I visit other places!
It’s annoying but Inconsiderate people live here too, local people do silly things as well not just visitors.
Those rude people on this thread , do you never leave your area, ever?! Hmm

TheSunShinesBright · 15/06/2021 07:54

Of course you can’t expect people to stay away. You can, however, expect them to treat the place with the same respect they’d show their own area.

They do. Pigs at home, pigs on holiday.

The same people litter their own local parks, drive selfishly on their own roads, leave a mess in restaurants, are rude in shops, chuck takeaway wrappers out of their car window on their way home.

Disgusting people live everywhere - including tourist towns.
