Fire Pits! Why?!

redheadonatractor · 12/06/2021 21:21

So it's still 22 degrees outside here. My baby and childs bedrooms are 28 degrees. Our upstairs is absolutely boiling.

Can I open the windows? No, because our arsehole selfish neighbour has lit a fire. Just a bin with wood in burning merrily outside. It fucking stinks. I had the upstairs windows open for ten minutes half an hour ago and it's stunk the house out even downstairs.

It's warm out. Why, why why do people need fire?! There is no need.

Rant over. Selfish pigs.

It seems I’m the only one in my friendship group who doesn’t love a fire to sit round in the evening. They stink. When we get home From an evening with the fire pit lit, everything we have taken out with us will need washing, including coats which is such a pain. I’d much rather sit inside or get a hat and blanket to keep warm.

Same here!

Oh I love it. The smell takes me right back to my childhood.

Muddydoor · 12/06/2021 23:46

Was worried a house I went past today was on fire. Probably a fire pit. I bet the fire brigade get loads of false call outs by people who are worried a nearby house may be on fire.

Wineat5isfine · 12/06/2021 23:58

Love a fire pit! Even in the summer months. Neighbours also have them. We really don’t have a problem with it.

They’re great to sit around, kids can toast marshmallows…

We only use moon dried wood which isn’t Smokey - as do our neighbours. Maybe suggest the same to yours?

Wineat5isfine · 12/06/2021 23:58

Ok the above post should said kiln dried wood!! Lol

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/06/2021 00:00

We don't have a fire pit owning neighbour but we do have a barbecuing one. They have a huge garden but they have sited the barbecue 6ft from our lounge patio doors and our small patio area.

lavenderlou · 13/06/2021 00:01

We have one for an occasional toasting marshmallows evening. Only use it once or twice a year at home though, mainly it's for camping.

Haggisfish · 13/06/2021 00:01

I love our fire pit and the smell of wood smoke. And roasting marshmallows.

PennineWayinSlingbacks · 13/06/2021 00:16

We only use moon dried wood

I need to have some of this in my life!

We've got a fire pit but there are no other houses within half a mile...

TSSDNCOP · 13/06/2021 16:19

The problem I find when I sit at one (friends who have one on their totally isolated farms) is that my front feels scorched whilst my back is freezing.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 13/06/2021 16:23

Love a fire pit. Love the smell of woodsmoke. Wouldn’t bother me at all.

HelpMeh · 13/06/2021 16:24

@redheadonatractor

I stand corrected. They've 'put it out' and gone inside. However it's still lit a bit with a small flame and it still smoking like hell.

Excellent! Angry

Do you have a hose...?
user1471543683 · 13/06/2021 16:27

My neighbour is the same, hot weather but the home made fire pit is lit. Usually when I have my washing out. Angry

BertieBotts · 13/06/2021 16:35

Why do you have to have the windows closed just because somebody has a fire? I don't close the windows when my neighbours have a fire. I don't light fires either but I don't see why this is a problem.

It's not an offensive smell IMO.

Whingey · 13/06/2021 16:39

Worked on a caravan camp once. Every time staff burnt cardboard to save paying for bins to be emptied someone always called fire brigade out saying camp was on 🔥

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/06/2021 16:40

Go and speak to them then OP, I'm sure they'll distinguish it if it's an issue.

I love a fire pit, lovely in the evening, and I do like the smell. I wouldn't ever have one as we live in terraced housing, but the neighbours have a bbq occasionally, always knock on the door to forewarn us in case we have washing out or want to close the windows. It is nice to see peoppe enjoying their gardens and freedom. Washing can be rewashed.

Unless its every single day or or all the time I can't see a huge issue. Windows open on a stifling day will hardly cool the house and it's just part and parcel of having neighbours.

It is for me. I get a headache and sore throat every time my neighbours use theirs. I hate the bloody things.

Adarajames · 13/06/2021 18:23

I love having a fire, long as not burning toxic things like plastic, love the smell of woodsmoke. Would site it away from the house though, so bottom of garden so furthest from neighbours house (although one side is particularly revolting so really don’t care if it bothers them!)

stopringingme · 14/06/2021 10:09

A family round the corner had theirs lit - but they were no where to be seen, their patio doors and windows overlooking their garden were shut, so obviously the smoke was too much for them too!

The smoke was blowing my way and I had to shut all my windows on that side of the house.

AlfonsoTheMango · 14/06/2021 10:12

I love fire pits. If I had a bigger garden, I would definitely get one.

DrCoconut · 14/06/2021 10:39

I have one for camping. It's great for cooking, far better than a camp stove. But living in a town centre terrace I don't use it at home.

Gilead · 14/06/2021 11:55

Mine will be lit later. I’ve had a chat with the neighbours.

Exactly - the pollution & nano particles given off from a fire pit are seriously bad for human health. OP's neighbours wouldn't like it if you pipe diesel fumes directly into their house which is effectively what they are doing to OP www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/dec/17/wood-burners-urban-air-pollution-cancer-risk-study

MrsDThomas · 08/08/2022 22:28

I love mine too. We once sat outside on camping chairs in the snow with the fire on. It was lovely!
