What symptoms did your DC get with teething?

We are going through it at the moment. Temp, runny nappies, random outbursts of crying in pain that will only be soothed by calpol and anbesol
We’ve only ever had two come through at once previously but we’ve got six at the moment and to say I’m frazzled is an understatement

I’m taking DS to doctor on Monday to get ears etc looked at to be on the safe side as it’s been five days of this now but every time we get a random high temp a bloody new tooth pops through

The drool runs down the back of his throat in the night so on the occasion when he does sleep despite the teething pain, the cough wakes him up

It made me think about how doctors say there’s no medical evidence that teething causes any of this but my DC can’t be alone in experiencing this?!

Also if anyone else has anything that is a magic cure, please share! Grin

I've only ever met 1 person who claims their child never suffered when teething and she attributed it to her child wearing an amber teething bracelet so it's clear she was talking absolute nonsense and so doesn't count in my non scientific research.

Everyone else's children all had the horrid nappies, temperatures and tearful outburst. I absolutely don't believe teething causes no symptoms why wouldn't it, after all you just have to think how much pain wisdom teeth cause adults.

Sadly no magic cure here, just solidarity as DS is currently cutting his molars. Anbesol is the best thing we've found but sometimes even that doesn't help.

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 13:39

Yes I don’t set much stock in amber bracelets I’m afraid!
I think I was just expecting it to be over after a couple of days but then we will get another couple of days plus a temperature spike and crying in pain and another one will pop through!
He might be going for a record

I hope yours doesn’t last long - has it been going in for long @GreenCrayon

I wanted to ring 111 initially before it became obvious what it was, spoke to the GP in the week and am now resisting the urge to call 111 again - it just seems to be going on for so long but I can’t deny there is a pattern for each new tooth

He's been cutting the moalrs for about a week and a half and it now looks like hes got a canine coming through as well. He seems to get symptoms a few days before and then for the whole time they are coming through.

It feel like he's been teething for an eternity and it's hard to believe that there are only 20 of the bloody things total sometimes. Grin

ohnonotyetplease · 12/06/2021 13:56

Yes my daughter had all of those symptoms too. And a rash around her mouth as if her saliva had suddenly turned acidic, and a similar looking rash on her bottom too, poor kid.
I found camomilla sachets really helpful. They seem to just calm all of those symptoms down. Boots have them. And I added a dose of Calpol into her nighttime milk to help with settling the ache when she's trying to go to sleep.

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 13:56

Poor thing. I think we are experiencing the same - started last weekend properly although he’s had a slightly elevated temp and dribbling/chewing for a week before that
I could not believe it when I saw how many were poking through

Does your DS get temp/nappies/ all that jazz? I hear molars are the worst so you have my sympathies!

I don't really believe in the amber bead thing but I know several people who do and absolutely swear it works!

Yes horrible vile nappies, peaked temperatures which are especially fun in the midst of a pandemic and bouts of crying when he's clearly suffering with them.

I feel so sorry for the poor kid as I can still recall how much my wisdom teeth hurt when they came in, so goodness knows how he's dealing with cutting so many at once.

Hopefully once they are all there they wait a long while before falling out. Smile

HectorGloop · 12/06/2021 14:00

DD used to go from having a perfectly normal looking bum to red-raw and terribly painful in the space of 1 nappy change, always followed by a new tooth.

DS never suffered too badly, except for one day when he was really grumpy and miserable, nothing really settled him. Next day he had all four of his front teeth Shock

GreenCrayon · 12/06/2021 14:02

It cannot work though no matter how much they swear it does. Hence why I refuse to believe this person when they claim the lack of teething is because of this magical bracelet.

The chance are she just got very fortunate with a child who didn't suffer as much as the rest of the children are. That's just luck nothing more.

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:04

@GreenCrayon I always think that - wisdom pain was atrocious! So I have such sympathy for him. Considering how many he’s brewing I think he’s coping well but I can’t deny the temperatures are stressing me out - I’m sure they wouldn’t as much if we weren’t in a pandemic. I’ve been a bit thermometer handy of late!

There seems to be a definite pattern here - he spiked to 39 and two teeth broke through, same again the next day then later in the week 38.8 and another couple, today same temp and it looks like the same is going to happen.

I hope we get a break after this one though and he goes back to normal as I’m sure it’s not very nice for him and we are both exhausted! He also weirdly seems to prefer hard food - baby biscuits, rice cakes etc when I presumed he would want soft!

DarcyLewis · 12/06/2021 14:04

I don't really remember my three getting any specific teething symptoms, maybe chewing on things? Possibly dribbling. Nothing that stands out though.

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:05

@HectorGloop funny how it can be so different isn’t it!
Apparently I used to really suffer and always get an ear infection with every tooth and the first my mum knew my brother was teething the teeth were already through!

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:06

The smell of the nappies is really something as well. This morning it was like acid and sulphur - not my favourite combination to start the day BOAK

Apparently teething symptoms are quite culturally specific - so some cultures don't really have the same concept of "teething", whereas here any grumpiness, poor sleep, crying, dribbling, bad nappies or high temperatures between the ages of about 2 months and 18 months is assumed to be "teething".

GreenCrayon · 12/06/2021 14:07

Oww that's random DS is the same. I thought it would be a case if mashed potatos and soft bread to munch on but he's also favouring hard food. I guess it must be providing some relief from the pain.

giftidea · 12/06/2021 14:07

Yep and it's total bollocks.

Teething doesn't cause any of those symptoms

bruffin · 12/06/2021 14:09

My ds suffered and actually had his first febrile convulsion (genetic) due to teething, spent a day in hospital and had no infection etc or anything else wrong. He would also get eczema on his face when he was cutting teeth.

My dd cut 4 teeth without us noticing at all, later had an impacted tooth with no pain. Certainly wasn't wearing amber

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:11

@bruffin oh that’s scary :( is a genetic febrile seizure different to a standard one? Forgive my ignorance!

@giftidea but it has to be more than a coincidence that for every tooth DS has cut he has spiked a fever on the day it’s come through? Surely it can’t be random infections or viruses each time?

OP posts:

And yet my DS and many other children only get certain symptoms when they are actively cutting a tooth.

For example he's never had acidic smelling nappies apart from when a tooth is coming through. His diet doesn't change during this time but he does favour some foods over others although nothing that would lead to the horrid nappies as he doesn't get them when he eats this food when not teething.

Abouttimemum · 12/06/2021 14:13

We’ve been lucky in that DS has never been massively bothered by teething but he’s always get a temperature and a cough in the days before a new tooth or two popped through!

We were bracing ourselves for his last back molars as we’d been told they were really dreadful but I took him to the dentist a few weeks ago and she said they were through! I’m aware we are incredibly lucky.

But yes to temp, cough and sometimes snots pre eruption!

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:16

@Abouttimemum what a result!

"More serious symptoms, such as sleep awakenings, decreased appetite for solid foods, facial rashes, and slightly elevated temperatures (but not above 102 degrees), were more likely to occur one or two days before or on the same days a tooth came through"
I was certainly feverish and in pain when my wisdoms came through
As i said above DS had a fc when he teethed a molar. FC happen when temperatures shoot up not necessarily when high . 102 is well within the range he had FC.

GreenCrayon · 12/06/2021 14:26

Exactly so why would ifmt be illogical to anticipate children will also suffer when they were cutting teeth.

Im sorry to hear he had such serious side effects. It must have been very frightening to see him suffering like that. Hopefully it was a one off.
