What symptoms did your DC get with teething?

We are going through it at the moment. Temp, runny nappies, random outbursts of crying in pain that will only be soothed by calpol and anbesol
We’ve only ever had two come through at once previously but we’ve got six at the moment and to say I’m frazzled is an understatement

I’m taking DS to doctor on Monday to get ears etc looked at to be on the safe side as it’s been five days of this now but every time we get a random high temp a bloody new tooth pops through

The drool runs down the back of his throat in the night so on the occasion when he does sleep despite the teething pain, the cough wakes him up

It made me think about how doctors say there’s no medical evidence that teething causes any of this but my DC can’t be alone in experiencing this?!

‘Teething’ doesn’t exist, it’s just a cultural artifact. There are no moments in a baby’s life when his/her teeth are NOT developing, along with jaws, skull, nose, eye sockets, every aspect of their skeleton in fact. The baby teeth are there when the baby is born. They move into position for weaning, and the gum recedes above them. No ‘cutting’ involved.

This is just a cycle of reinforcement. Baby crying? Are teeth developing ? Yes, (because there is never a moment when they aren’t). Therefore, it must be the teeth developing that causes the baby to cry.

The damage in perpetuating this is twofold.

  1. a genuine medical problem may be missed

  2. mother’s banging on about ‘teething’ is irrefutable proof of the ‘mother’s instinct’ myth. In other words, it’s evidence that mothers ( or a specific mother) basically had not a clue about their child, when they talk about their ‘gut feeling’

This is not new, by the way. The fact that ‘teething’ does not exist has been known for generations.

Funny how tenacious myths can be. This is an interesting area of research in itself.

That’s what I don’t understand, I had all sorts of symptoms when my wisdom came through - but people are adamant that children don’t get any of these with their teeth

@Nedstarkshonour
Sort of yes. Febrile convulsions do run in families but mist children will only have one ore two and stop at 5. My family has something called GEFS+ which means they will have a lot more and it goes on to puberty.
Ds had over 20 , the last one at 13. Dd had 4 between age 3and 4.
My sister, my Dm, my DGM also had FC until pubert. In extreme cases you get Dravet syndrome which causes brain damsge.
It is a gene mutation on scn1 and wasn't even discovered when dc was born! Yet it goes back at least to 1913 in my family!

Cranky, dribbly and horrible smelling soft poop (very different to a stomach bug poop).

As bruffin already said, my wisdom teeth made me miserable and I knew what was going on and could take painkillers as soon as I realised. I used to give mine calpol quite a lot in those early teething days, it's not nice for them.

Nedstarkshonour · 12/06/2021 14:39

Same! I was popping paracetamol and ibuprofen every time I possibly could so although I don’t like to give DS calpol often, when he’s teething and in pain I do as it’s horrible to leave them suffering
