Water bill increase - what do you pay?

ImbarbaraB · 11/06/2021 09:59

I’ve just had a letter through from the water company saying our monthly payment is increasing to £45 per month from next month

This is for 2 adults and 2 young children.

Does this seem like a lot?

Before they forced us to be metered we were unmetered and paid £28 a month

About £120pq.
1 adult, 1 weekend adult visitor, 2 teens.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 11/06/2021 10:13

£100 per month.
2 adults
2 children

Live in the most expensive area for water it seems

FrogFairy · 11/06/2021 11:17

Single person household and I pay £41 per month unmetered.

Planning to get a meter fitted shortly and hoping the bill will decrease significantly.

ZoBo123 · 11/06/2021 11:19

20pounds per month. 2 adults, 2 children. Metered and use a lot of water

juneybean · 11/06/2021 11:20

£15 a month, 2 adults - metered.

Ivy48 · 11/06/2021 11:21

2 adults is £38 a month in my area for unmetered. Similar prices for bugger household too. Sound fairly reasonable

DahliaMacNamara · 11/06/2021 11:21

£63 a month metered. Usually 3 adults in the house. DH has an extravagant bath habit, and we have a big bath, but no hosepipes, sprinklers or anything else.

sparklecrazy · 11/06/2021 11:22

2 adults and 2 reception age children -£38 a month metered.

MegBusset · 11/06/2021 11:23

£180 a quarter. Two adults, two teens.

romany4 · 11/06/2021 11:24

I had to pay£40 a month.
It's included in my rent

BarbaraofSeville · 11/06/2021 11:24

Water varies quite a bit across the country with variations due to household size and usage like car washing and garden watering.

£45 pm is quite middle of the road, but circumstances vary so much that it's hard to say whether this is reasonable for your household.

There should be a calculator on your water company website that you can use to work out what your bill should be and also find out how to save water and hence money.

KelleyHIJkL · 11/06/2021 11:27

£88 pm unmetered.
Expensive (SW) compared with other places it would seem!
We’ve toyed with getting a meter but have 2 kids who bathe every day so presume it wouldn’t be cost effective.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/06/2021 11:29

Yes, SW water is famously the most expensive in the country.

Something to do with having so much coastline.

Rillington · 11/06/2021 11:34

Ours is £46 unmetered.

GoldenBlue · 11/06/2021 11:38

£29 per month unmetered but no waste as we're on a septic tank

bonfireheart · 11/06/2021 12:40

1 adult and 1 child, with water meter, about £120 every six months.

LimeAndLemons · 11/06/2021 12:57

Our current house has a meter, we pay approx £60pm. Last house was unmetered, paid £40pm. I hate having a meter!

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/06/2021 13:09

The thing with paying for your metered water by direct debit is that your water company is making a prediction about what your next meter reading will be based on past meter reading history . It will also take into consideration any underpayment on the last bill.
Of course any dripping tap, leaky washing machine or dishwasher, or cistern overflowing will clock up on your meter.

Everyday21 · 11/06/2021 13:12

£40 per quarter on a meter. 2 adults 2 children and a lot of tea consumption

Notmulan · 11/06/2021 13:19

That is high but my water company suggests that now we’re all living and working at home water usage is 40% higher. Metered tariffs are usually cheaper than unmetered tariffs which are based on a very weird calculation , based on the “rateable value” of your home, a little like council tax.

I pay £26 a month on a meter which is lower than it was before (2 adults 3 children), but we’ve become a bit more mindful of what we use now that we’re charged by it and our children are young enough to share a bath. Here, Your waste water bill is charged at 80% of your water bill, so if you use less water your sewerage charges usually go down too.

CrazyBaubles · 11/06/2021 14:08

In the old house we paid £45 unmetered.
New house has a meter, it's £15. 2 adults.

If you're on a meter, check for any leaks and ask the company to explain the price change to you.
When we moved in they billed us £60p/m - when we queried this they said it was based on previous owners usage and they couldn't check ours as meter is broken.
2 phone calls later we are £160 in credit with a reduced cost being charged until the meter is fixed!

ShrekandDonkey · 11/06/2021 14:32

£89 a month, 2 adults 3 children. South West Water of course.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 11/06/2021 15:07

Never not been on a water meter.

It was £32pm, 2 adults, 2 teens, daily showers, dishwasher, washing machine on every day. It has increased to £40pm due to everyone being here over lockdown. Usually it is just me in the house on a weekday.

CrumpetsForAll · 11/06/2021 15:14

£95 a month. 2 adults, 3 kids and we re-seeded the lawn and had to water it all in. Hey to everyone else in the sunny SW! 👋

NannyGythaOgg · 11/06/2021 16:01

Metered
£13 per month
live alone - and retired so home most of the time. Occasional car washing and summer plant watering about 10 mins daily when dry.
