Is the interior of your house ‘up to date’ and well maintained?

Or is it like mine and a bit rough?
Old kitchen, carpets need replacing, rooms need redecorating...

I’m looking on right move and most houses look like show homes and seem to have brand new kitchens, bathrooms and wallpaper in every room...

I’m starting to think I’m living in a dump.
The walls/ floors are neutral and I have nice furniture but The actual fixtures and fittings are tired. Anyone else?

We own our house for 11 years now and only finished an update of the bathroom last autumn.

We concentrated on some minor updating first like paint plus an extension. When the cofferes were full again the kitchen was priority and then the bathroom. Hopefully nothing major needs to be done for these two for the next 10 years or so.

I think I may start saving for an update on floorboards in the nearer future.

I paint the rooms like I want, I don't care about current trends so all walls are white but we have warm wooden furnitures and pictures on the wall.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 11/06/2021 07:55

Nope, not well-maintained due to combination of autistic DS and poorly DH. What energy I have after a day at work, then goes on time with our son and not on decorating the house. Bedrooms and hallway haven't bene touched since we moved in, six years ago. Living room has had one coat of paint (after removing the orange wallpaper from the previous owners). Bathroom, kitchen and electrics are "patch it and hope for the best".

PawsQueen · 11/06/2021 07:58

My kitchen and bathrooms are 13 years old but look fine, they haven't had heavy wear so still look good
Everywhere has been painted and I've had new carpets down in the main rooms
Recently valued and they told me nothing needed doing to sell so that does me!

We rent.

So no, it’s not all nice. Parts are falling apart, most fittings are the cheapest available so fail quickly (thinking laminate floor which has warped in the kitchen because of a leak). We have decorated when we moved in but the state of some walls was absolutely horrendous. Nothing we can do about any of it so we keep it as nice as we can.

We have slightly crap second hand sofas, and our dining table needs replacing but they’ll ‘do’ so we never get round to it. Blush

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/06/2021 08:21

We always just decorate and furnish our house to our taste and not with a view to selling it. Most rooms get redecorated every 10-15 years, kitchen is 20 years old and due a change so will likely get done in next couple of years.

Most on MN just seem to decorate and furnish their house thinking what the next owner will want.

What a woefully inaccurate/naive reply Confused

I live in an old fairly old biggish house (not boasting we live in in a cheapish area) and it feels a bit like whack-a-mole, in that as soon as one bit is done something else then needs doing.

HarrisMcCoo · 11/06/2021 21:26

Yep, that's my house OP. Old tatty carpet in our living room unlikely to be replaced for years now due to buying an upright acoustic piano.

Stairwell area needs new wallpaper and carpets but not in a rush as we have a giant breed of dog and they make a mess.

We are not house proud folks.

nancybotwinbloom · 11/06/2021 21:39

I've painted everything white. Easy to maintain and just needs touching up.

Re pain the gloss every couple of years.

wheresmymojo · 12/06/2021 08:05

I always keep spare paint in the colours we have (which are very neutral anyway, mostly white).

Once a year I polyfilla any scratches and dents in the walls and touch up the paint. It doesn't take very long and keeps the whole house looking lovely and fresh.

I purposefully chose neutrals and what I'd consider classic style rather than any specific trend so that the house doesn't ever date.

Colour is added with rugs/cushions/bedding/art which can all be changed at less expense and hassle than redecorating.

wheresmymojo · 12/06/2021 08:07

Our carpets are terrible though (upstairs, downstairs is Amtico). Bloody cats have plucked away at every single doorway!

Camomila · 12/06/2021 08:11

AledsiPad snap! I can't wait to move.

Manzanilla55 · 12/06/2021 08:57

I think rentals are usually well maintained at the time of being rented out but for people who own their own homes the standard varies.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 12/06/2021 09:23

My house is a mix at the moment. We bought a fixer upper 6 months ago. I've nearly completed the kitchen. I've given the main bedroom a makeover and my spare bedroom. My living room and hallway is currently a building siteand my bathroom is dated and has a leaky shower which needs fixing. Sadly I will be putting it up for sale once the work is finished as I'm going to be divorcing stbxh. My old house took 12 years to completely decorate and then we put it up for sale. On right move there is a mix of properties either doer uppers or houses that have been recently refurbished.

You don’t rent, do you? 😂
Manzanilla55 · 14/06/2021 05:47

Lol PattyPan I don't rent but thought usually at the time of sign up the walls etc had been freshly painted. Landlords can be tight though!

Bloodybridget · 14/06/2021 06:06

We've been in our house nearly 20 years, have done some major alterations but there's loads more that would improve it. New bathroom created two years ago is the only thing you might be likely to see in a swish property on Rightmove! The kitchen has probably been in at least 30 years, it's very impractical in terms of layout, but is very attractive with an interesting history (lots of wood and the parquet floor reclaimed from what is now the oldest hospital in England). There are persistent damp areas that drive me mad but seem impossible to sort out.

Apart from that, floorboards gape, carpets are still respectable, walls don't look bad.

AuntieMarys · 14/06/2021 07:09

We moved in 5 years ago and everything had been newly painted. Just booked decorators for 2 weeks in September to do hall, stairs and landing plus 3 bedrooms.
They are booked in again for next February to do the downstairs.
Dh has done 2 rooms since we moved in, and he did a good job....but its time consuming and we have better things to do on his days off.

honeylulu · 14/06/2021 09:33

Every year seems astonishing! For a start it's so disruptive to have to move furniture and have rooms out of action.

We moved into our house (4 storey, 5 beds) two and and a half years ago and the inside has been gradually renovated/decorated. It's been hugely disruptive, stressful and expensive. Now the outside! I think it will take another year to finish (keep having to stop-start to save up for the next bit and have a breather/break from workmen all the time).

In the meantime some of the rooms have had a few bumps and marks so recently I have got all the paint out of the loft and done some touch ups. I've also re-oiled all the exposed wood to keep it maintained and looking nice. Those jobs alone used most of a precious weekend!

We lived in our old house 14 years and gradually redecorated each room as necessary. Only one room was done twice (decided to replace bathroom suite). The carpets and kitchen were never replaced and looked fine.

We prefer a classic look, not a fashionable one which I think helps avoid "dating".

Roystonv · 14/06/2021 09:39

It's not only when the house is on the market but even on our local seek and sell just selling some babygrows - the backgrounds look so new and the latest fashion. How do young couples afford it.

redheadonatractor · 14/06/2021 09:43

Oh no mine really needs a spruce up. It's fine, presentable and all in working order but we decorated throughout when we moved in 8 years ago and had new carpets etc but haven't don't anything else since. We've also got a leather sofa which I hate and is so dated.

We've two young children, so seems a it pointless when there are endless spills, paint accidents, toilet training etc. Once they're older we'll make it lovely again. Although we may sell in a year and if we do we'll need to go around and touch up. When we had it valued all 4 estate agents said not to redecorate. We're got lots of neutrals and although they're a bit tatty now they're not offensive and they said it's a waste of time and money unless it's really dreadful.

You can't have seen many rental properties then because the standard varies from the well maintained to the downright uninhabitable I'm afraid.
