Is the interior of your house ‘up to date’ and well maintained?

Or is it like mine and a bit rough?
Old kitchen, carpets need replacing, rooms need redecorating...

I’m looking on right move and most houses look like show homes and seem to have brand new kitchens, bathrooms and wallpaper in every room...

I’m starting to think I’m living in a dump.
The walls/ floors are neutral and I have nice furniture but The actual fixtures and fittings are tired. Anyone else?

Mine's moderate IMO inside but the outside woodwork is a disgrace Grin.

I think Rightmove pics are very deceptive having viewed plenty recently.

KitBot · 10/06/2021 21:32

We moved in 2years ago. So far we've ripped stuff out and made a mess. Nothing is complete except the new bathroom. The last owners made questionable colour choices (living room is baby shit green).
But we've been saving during lockdown and a new kitchen and full paint job courtesy of a decorating company are due to start this month.
If someone else wasn't doing the painting I'd live with the shit green forever. Just no time or motivation

The photos I have just taken of each room make my house look nice so I think you’re right. They just don’t pick up how shoddy it is. Even our awful carpets look quite nice.

I'm renovating a wreck, so no its certainly not a show home. At the moment I have a basin hanging on the wall precariously, a rusted ancient soil pipe, cracked toilet bowl, and no floor in the bathroom, and the plaster is falling off in huge chunks.....luxury living it is not. In 6months the whole house will be finished, and it will have taken 18 months in total.

I find it strange that people can settle with the previous owners carpets or decorating, so ive always adopted the dilapidated and turned it round. DH has tried to slow things up and suggested living with their flooring. It was skipped while he was at workGrin. The last house I decorated once, then lived in it for 15years, so I'm not fussy about updating my own stuff.

PracticingPerson · 10/06/2021 21:37

I viewed a house that had huge threadbare patches when we got there, the area was in the photos but you couldn't see. Has been a real eye opener.

MiniTheMinx · 10/06/2021 21:38

I think you are right about photographs not picking up the faults.

delilahbucket · 10/06/2021 21:38

Ours doesn't look out of date, but it's ten years old, apart from the kitchen which we extended and refurbished a couple of years ago. We're just in the process of doing a bathroom and will work our way through each room. The extension cost us a lot so we've had to save up again to get more things done. The only real wear is the walls look like they need a repaint and the stairs carpet is starting to look a bit sorry for itself! We've also got cracks around the windows as the house has settled after being built.

Hughbert · 10/06/2021 21:39

If I take a photo of my living room, it looks bloody awesome. In life, there is chipped paint, a cat scratched sofa arm and a scabby table. Take photos of yours and see if they pass the Rightmove from a distance through a lens test. Tidy room, hoovered carpet, vase of flowers...most people's homes scrub up well.

Hughbert · 10/06/2021 21:40

Ah, apologies for cross post where you did just that!

Mareofwesttown · 10/06/2021 21:42

Couldn’t give a shiny xxxx. It’s home and we love it 😁

LoveNote · 10/06/2021 21:48

i just paid a decorator to do my lounge...pleasantly surprised so might get more rooms done

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 10/06/2021 21:49

It will just be the photos and that people have put all there stuff away or had a clear out.

PattyPan · 10/06/2021 21:52

We’ve decorated a couple of rooms since we bought the place in 2019 but the overriding look is still shabby and our furniture is either hand me downs or IKEA. There are more things I want to do but I wouldn’t want to more than about once a decade unless it got really run down! I don’t like the kitchen so I’m trying to persuade DP to let me get new doors/drawer fronts to get rid of the cleaning nightmare that is handle-less white gloss.

Ickythefirebobby · 10/06/2021 21:52

@OublietteBravo

No. We’ve only decorated four rooms since we moved in 8 years ago. It’s very granny chic. Plus most of our furniture was inherited from our grandparents and doesn’t match.
It sounds lovely and cosy. I love a bit of granny furniture.
DinosaurDiana · 10/06/2021 21:54

Mine needs doing top to bottom, but I just can’t get motivated.

Worriesome · 10/06/2021 21:56

The properties you are viewing are trying to be sold so I presume they’ve had some work done and a nice deep clean and some upgraded bits and bobs. Don’t feel so down, as long as u are happy in it that’s all that matters x

Twatterati · 10/06/2021 21:56

I'm sure loads (most) of places on Rightmove have been 'done' to go on the market. They all look the same as well, a bit sparse and anonymous! Mine scrubbed and tidied up amazingly when it went on the market but was a total PITA to actually live in and keep like it!

Where I am now is rented and a bit shit TBH but I'm loathed to spend money on it, although a lick of paint would work wonders if I can ever be bothered. I've certainly noticed more of its 'faults' being in it so much for months on end.

Yeah, it's not just you OP and I bet yours is nowhere near as bad as you think.

EversoDelighted · 10/06/2021 21:58

We decorate each room about once every 20 years, we don't have much free time and although we could get someone in the thought of having to clear the rooms is pretty offputting, they are small and quite crowded with furniture, you couldn't push it into the middle and work round as you wouldn't fit in the gaps. We do update curtains/blinds/cushions and most of our furniture is reasonably new, we've replaced a lot in the last 5 or 6 years.

museumum · 10/06/2021 21:58

We’ve been here 5-6 years and dine every room now except the kitchen.
Walls in high traffic areas like the hall need done again after 4-5 years. I’d expect kitchen and bathroom to last c10 years.

Bhappy12 · 10/06/2021 22:00

Ours is (apart from the bathroom, which is VERY 70's, builders starting work on it next month) but only because we've worked our way through the house in the last couple of years.
Lockdown gave us both the time and money due to DH not spending 8k a year on commuting, before that it was a slow progression.

SushiGo · 10/06/2021 22:00

Rightmove definitely not reflective!

I decorate a room or two each year depending on what most needs it.

I like decorating and do it myself but you need a decent amount of dedicated time to strip clean, redecorate and redress each room.

It's completely normal for the whole house to be in progress forever!

HairyToity · 10/06/2021 22:01

Ours is very shabby. I have two young children, and work four days a week. Husband works long hours. We say we'll get to it once the kids are both school age. Right now it can wait and we'll enjoy our time with the children. At the end of the day we have a roof over our head and all we need.

Ylvamoon · 10/06/2021 22:01

Yep, we just have done ours up ... it really is lovely crisp and new!
But this will have to last for the next 15 - 20 years - like the old stuff!

Chocolatier9 · 10/06/2021 22:02

The estate agent selling my last place described my kitchen as “rather tired”. Grin

It was clean and everything worked, but it was old and unfashionable and not beautifully matched.

What can I say? Having a beautiful kitchen isn’t anywhere on my list of priorities.

I had some lovely bookcases and a nice garden though so he took pictures of those.

Oly4 · 10/06/2021 22:03

We redecorate every 2-3 years, deep clean every six months, replace things like cushions every two years. I expect kitchen etc to last years and years though. You really do notice the difference if you keep walls nicely painted
