Arghhh, dd 14 is in the middle of school exams and ill!

As the title says. She's in Yr 9, right in the middle of a week of school exams and tonight has developed a temp of 38.4. No other symptoms. COVID test negative (lateral flow one). Would you send her in to sit the exams?? Normally I would give a day off after a high temp at this time of night but exams! She has Art, DT and computer science tomorrow, none of which she is taking for GCSE.

What do others think?? Push on through regardless or miss the day? Could easily resit if needed, but not sure they'd bother.

She needs a PCR if she has symptoms. It's only year 9 exams they aren't that important.

Gladioli23 · 09/06/2021 22:26

If she has a high temperature she needs to self isolate and take a PCR covid test, so I don't think missing exams tomorrow is optional?

MoiraNotRuby · 09/06/2021 22:26

I have a Y9 DD doing exams, if she had a temperature I would of course keep her at home and get her tested with a PCR.

The exams really really aren't important.

Year 9 missed all these last year and coped. If she isnt doing the subjects next year stay home tomorrow and get pcr tested.

Cattitudes · 09/06/2021 22:31

Agree pcr tomorrow the exams are not important and she is dropping the subjects anyway.

Clymene · 09/06/2021 22:37

She's ill. Of course you don't send her in Confused

YouLookSoCool · 09/06/2021 22:42

She needs to have a PCR test. Don't think school would be happy with her coming in having had a temperature. Yr 9 exams aren't essential.

I know, I know and I normally wouldn't.

Ok, that's unanimous! Thanks everyone, I appreciate the responses. A day at home it is for her tomorrow Smile And one less school run for me 😂

No, but the school takes them very seriously. For things like learning the best revision strategies, exam technique and the experience of sitting formal, invigilated exams, etc., before GCSEs.

Don't forget the pcr test as advised upthread, and the whole household must isolate while awaiting the results.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 09/06/2021 22:51

The school might take them very seriously but it doesn’t make them any more important.

Keep her at home and get her tested.

Scarby9 · 09/06/2021 22:53

Schools also take temperatures and PCRs seriously .
A day at home APART from a PCR test... and waiting for the result.

Houseplantmad · 09/06/2021 22:56

The school would take it very seriously if she didn’t self isolate and take a PCR as she could potentially take out a number of her school colleagues as well as staff if she is positive.
Please listen to the advice others have given and get her tested as the lateral flow tests don’t necessarily pick up the newer variants.

Houseplantmad · 09/06/2021 22:57

And as others have said, the whole household must isolate until you get the result.

You can do any school runs. You all need to self isolate until she gets a negative result.

She's my only one still in school so no need to go anywhere Smile

Yep, I'll be arranging that PCR test ASAP.
The only thing is that she's started vomiting now Sad🙈🤮 Probably related to the fever rather than a stomach virus but she's definitely staying in bed for the next couple of days. Luckily I WFH so I'm on hand to dole out paracetamol/cuddles/water/sick buckets 😂

halcyondays · 10/06/2021 07:59

Of course you don’t send her in. hope she feels better soon.

TeenMinusTests · 10/06/2021 08:02

Any she isn't taking for GCSE don't matter one jot.

if there are more important ones on Friday you could ask for them to be emailed to you for her to sit on e.g. Sunday if recovered.

Quitelikeacatslife · 10/06/2021 08:05

If she's vomited that's 48 hours off from last vomit anyway now

Pinchoftums · 10/06/2021 08:08

You will have no school runs as you all need to stay until result. DS vomited before testing positive.

OrangeSharked · 10/06/2021 08:10

She still needs to get a covid teat. And yes needs to be off for 48 hrs post last vomit as a minimum (assuming pcr is negative). The whole family needs isolate until the test is back. We are well over a year into this I cant believe this still needs explaining

They are year 9 exams. They really don't matter. Its hardly like she's missing her A levels. Yes its good practice to sit them but if you don't it won't effect her a jot.

CagneyNYPD · 10/06/2021 08:16

Vomiting is regularly seen in children who then test positive.

G3ntlemanJ · 10/06/2021 08:26

PCR test booked for 10am today. Luckily there's a big testing site near us.
