What the chuff is Audible all about?!

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 15:58

I get audible, £10 a month, buy a book with a credit apparently.

Try and buy another one but I have no credit left.

And I can't for the bloody life of me figure out how to buy more credit.

Either way a book to listen to will cost more than the physical book itself.

You cant buy more credits on your plan.

The monthly amount gets you one credit to exchange per month. If you want any more, you pay full price. There may be alternative tariffs where you can get 2 credits per month for a set price.

The credits roll over so if you dont get a book for 3 months, you build up those three credits.

Audio books are expensive for sure, so one a month for 10/7.99 or whatever it is, is a good deal.

If you dont like a book you can return it and they will recruit you but you cannot do this loads.

If you go to cancel they will usually offer you half price for 3 months to stay.

Another good audiobook app is Borrow Box. It links with your local library (need membership) and you can download audiobooks for 21 days at a time then they go back off your device after that. It's free. You do have to wait for books to be returned from others

BluebellsGreenbells · 09/06/2021 16:03

Change your email and sign up with another account it’s 99p for three months on offer.

Sparkai · 09/06/2021 16:04

You can just buy the audio book through audible if you have run out of credits. It's usually more expensive than the credits are, but audio books are usually expensive. I just always choose long books with my credits!

You cam but three extra credits for £18

Rupertpenrysmistress · 09/06/2021 16:06

I pay £7.99 and get 1 book but I also buy extra credits at £18 for 3. I do love audible it is expensive but there 2 for ones or £2.99 books are great value and quite frequent. I also like that you can return books if you dislike them and get your credit back.

RubyGoat · 09/06/2021 16:07

Another app to use with libraries is Libby. It's free but I'm not sure if all libraries are signed up to it.

IsolaPribby · 09/06/2021 16:07

They sometimes have 2 for 1 deals too.

Librariesmakeshhhhappen · 09/06/2021 16:07

Your plan is 1 audiobook a month for £7.99. Why did you think you would get more than that?

You can change your plan to pay for 2 or 3 a month, but it will cost more obviously.

Sometimes they offer you extra, so on the top right beside where it says "0 credits" there is sometimes a little message saying "buy 3 credits for £18" so you can buy more that way but it might not always be available.

If you want, you can buy a gift voucher for a 6 month membership or whatever, and then type the voucher into your account and get the 6 credits.

StylishDuck · 09/06/2021 16:10

You can buy 3 credits for £18. £6 a book is about standard cost. You can't do it on the app though I don't think, you need to log on to the website to do it.

SpornStar · 09/06/2021 16:10

They run offers frequently where you can buy audiobooks at a reduced price. There’s a 2 for 1 offer on selected titles now according to my app.

I find it is sometimes cheaper to buy a book on Kindle (especially if it’s on a 99p offer) and then add the Audible narration at purchase which often only costs a few £££ more.

Talipesmum · 09/06/2021 16:10

How come it’s £10 / month? Standard monthly price in Uk is £7.99 I thought?
Yes, audiobooks are much more expensive in general than paper books, so it would generally be cheaper to buy paper books, but that’s a different thing.
I use it so much that I’ve just ended up going for the 24 credits per year annual plan, works out at £4.60 ish per book. They generally try to sell me extra credits when I run out.

ElderMillennial · 09/06/2021 16:10

You get one credit with the monthly plan (I didn't think it was as much as £10, maybe £7.99?) and after that you can simply purchase books.

You can also purchase credits.

TheoMeo · 09/06/2021 16:12

The Borrowbox app let's you borrow audiobooks for free from your library if you are a member. I think you go onto your library website first then log in from there.
And librivox has free public domain books. Read by volunteers. I gave a donation when I used it but you don't have to librivox.org/

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 09/06/2021 16:15

With audible if you contact customer support you can buy 12 or 24 credits annually (and it works out cheaper per credit). So you have to pay up front, but you also get all your credits up front too.

OldTinHat · 09/06/2021 16:26

As a PP has said, if you're a member of your local library you can borrow books and audibles for free via Borrow Box.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/06/2021 16:30

Libby app - local library app with free audiobooks (and normal books) is really good.

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 16:31

Your plan is 1 audiobook a month for £7.99. Why did you think you would get more than that?

Are you on the right thread?
I never said that.

I downloaded the Audible app and it asked me to join the membership for £9.99 a month to allow me to download books

I knew nothing about credits until I went to download a book. Then I realised I had one measly credit.

And it isn't £7.99

OP posts:
Disfordarkchocolate · 09/06/2021 16:33

I pay less than that each month for one book?

Anyway, you have to buy 3 credits for £18 on my plan. I don't do it very often. I put anything I fancy on my Wishlist and look out for sales and daily deals and buy them then.

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 16:36

£9.99 a month.

Is it Audible that people are using? Or a different app that sounds similar?

Audible. Through the Amazon website. 7.99pm

Inextremis · 09/06/2021 16:49

Once you've joined Audible, you can also access loads of podcasts and 'Audible Originals' for no further cost. I find it easiest to browse and choose downloads on the laptop, and then listen on my mobile devices. I'm on a 2 credits a month plan for £14.99, but it does say prices vary according to device. I tend to look for very, very long books, to make sure I get my money's worth - easy to find them when searching on the actual website, as opposed to the app, because you can filter by book length. There's a 2 for 1 sale on at the moment - for me, anyway!

WTFisNext · 09/06/2021 16:50

@StopSayingDueDiligence

£9.99 a month.

It's because you're buying it via Apple - they're sneaky on charges and work at odds with Amazon (you can't buy books on the Kindle app on Apple devices, only download existing ones).

Sorry that doesn't help with your original question, but does explain why you're paying more...although that may also be why you can't buy extra credits (Apple vs Amazon relationship)

StopSayingDueDiligence · 09/06/2021 16:57

Im looking at the amazon one now, it says that some books can be up to 80% off.

How is that possible if they cost 1 credit?

Audible cheat - Return the book once youve listened to it and you get your credit back.

This can be done 2-3 times in a month

I did this a fair few times because I genuinely didn't like the book I had downloaded. Then got an email from audible to say I wasn't allowed to return anymore books 🙄 I use xigxag now, much better.
