Which one do people have - a traditional hoop like the second image or one of those with the weight that spins round like the first?

Will this give me a waist? Or are they for general fitness.

The first one looks like a weapon.

Thelnebriati · 30/05/2021 21:50

I was talking to someone who used the first one once, and she said she had some pretty bad bruises.

rulesofthecar · 30/05/2021 21:59

I have the second, the traditional type. It did bruise me at first too, but only for the first week or so and then I could use it easily for half an hour a day while watching TV, with no pain.

I have the traditional shaped one. It was DDs but she's too thin for it and was covered in bruises. She would be better with the new shaped one.
I have a lot more padding so can use the other one no problems Grin

BettyOBarley · 30/05/2021 22:09

I have the traditional type. I did bruise quite badly at first on my hips and it was painful but it's fine now.

WrongKindOfFace · 30/05/2021 22:10

@ExJasper

I have this one. I've seen/heard the stories about bruises but don't have any myself.
I’ve reported your post in case that’s your postcode.
Peppapeg · 30/05/2021 22:16

The one on the left looks scary.

ExJasper · 30/05/2021 22:18

@WrongKindOfFace thank you Flowers

Thelnebriati · 30/05/2021 22:25

The one on the left does look scary but I can't hula hoop for toffee, which is why I was looking at it. But also my lot have helpfully pointed out that the only place big enough to use it is the garden, which is overlooked.
I tried an ordinary child's hoop and cant even manage 3 goes and I look like a plank of wood with a hinge in the middle Grin

Cocolapew · 30/05/2021 23:15

I find it easier to use a weighted one rather than an ordinary one. The DDs were very impressed by my hip action 💃

RacheyCat · 31/05/2021 00:14

The weighted ones are much easier to keep going than the light plastic ones. You'll get a better workout hooping with a light hoop than a weighted one.

TheWeeDonkey · 31/05/2021 01:12

Reading with interest. Do they actually work?

Walkerbean16 · 31/05/2021 08:22

be careful what you buy. I bought the first one on ebay it was a scam and I got a tracking number that said delivered before I in March even though I ordered in April. didn't get my money back and ebay have closed the case.

I ordered one from Amazon and it said delivered yesterday and I didn't get a parcel!

CimCardashian · 31/05/2021 08:29

Mine looks like the hoop in the 2nd pic,it’s still weighted though.

I bruised really badly at first,my hips looked like 21 day aged steak!

I can do it now but still can’t use a kids light one at all!

DamnShesaSexyChick · 31/05/2021 08:30

The second one, first one looks painful. I’ve no fat around my waist and I’ve never had any bruises from weighted hula hoops.

Noooooogsh · 31/05/2021 08:34

I’ve got the exact second one from Argos, it’s amazing! I thought I’d be rubbish but I can actually do it. As others have said the initial bruising was hideous, looked like I’d been hit by a car.

Hello

Don't make fun of me but...hulahoop dancer of nearly a decade here.

These are a gimmick and cause horrible bruising and even if you do learn to waist hoop with it it'll get boring really really fast.

Hooping in a terrific cardio activity and does also tone your core (as well as being really creative and fun) but these are just terrible products.

So! Depending on how tall you are get yourself a proper hoop 37" - 40" inches (bigger if you're taller) in a 25mm pipe. There are tonnes of good spinning/juggling sites that sell them but I recommend Firetoys or Oddballs...or (this is where I get mine) from Hoopspin hoopspin.co.uk/product/beginner-adult-hoop-plain-jane/

This will be heavy enough to go round your body slowly so your muscles have time to learn the mechanisms to keep this hoop up). As you get better you'll quickly want a smaller thinner hoop as these go faster and are more fun. Then hop on YouTube and look for hula-hooping tutorials...there are millions Grin Have fun!

Yellowcrockpot · 31/05/2021 08:39

What does hooping do for you? Will it give you a waistline? I was brilliant at it as a child, last time I tried I couldn't keep it up up all!

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 31/05/2021 08:41

For what? They work as a light exercise but they won't make your waist smaller

No! They are a light, fun exercise to do, that's it
HangingOver · 31/05/2021 08:42

For context I'm 5'10 and learned on a 40. If you're shorter you can probably go a bit smaller. And get a taped one as untaped are a bit more advanced. PM me if you want any more advice about choosing your first hoop - I promise if you get the right one you'll be amazed how fast you pick it up and are wanting to move onto something speedier Grin

TheWeeDonkey · 31/05/2021 08:45

Thanks Beeeeeeep I've gotten a proper belly on me this last lock down and my clothes are getting tight. Classes have started back at the qym so I'll start going again but I'm just after something I can do at home to tone up.

RacheyCat · 31/05/2021 14:54

You can do a decent cardio workout with a non-weighted hoop. During our lockdown when we weren't really encouraged to go outside, I used to hoop along to music for about 45 minutes a day. My fitness tracker reckoned I burned up to 500 calories. You will get great core strength too.
