Is there any way to stop the b'stard tabloids stealing stories from Mnet?

Just reading the thread about the vile bride who didn't want her friend to be a bridesmaid because the dresses were more important than her friendship and seen the link to where the Sun has just lifted the whole story, inserted some ridiculous stock images and called it journalism. Fucking cheek.

Is there any way to stop them? @MNHQ Can we copyright all our posts?!

Can I offer a dissenting view. I am OK with it as long as MN is acknowledged at the beginning of the article. It exposes lazy journalism.

Glad you referred to them as tabloids, as I would never call The Sun a newspaper, and the Daily Mail is The Paper that Supported the Blackshirts.

MN already has copyright on your posts.

Why on earth would Mumsnet want to stop getting such valuable advertising? Can you imagine how much it would cost for a full page advert on the Sun or DM's site?

WorraLiberty · 30/05/2021 10:18

They haven't stolen anything, it's public content.

Even if copyright was a possibility, why on earth would MNHQ want to do that?

Mumsnet is a business and as such, they want as much exposure as possible, which in turn creates new members and more advertising revenue.

It's not hard to understand and that's the risk you take if you want to use this free public forum.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/05/2021 10:24

😂

SpindleWhorl · 30/05/2021 10:25

No.

Faranth · 30/05/2021 10:27

As I read on here the other day - if you're not paying for something then you're the product, you're not the customer!

thisplaceisweird · 30/05/2021 10:28

Its public content.

Mumsnet make money from partnerships, sponsored posts and all the ads placed on the site.

Have you ever considered Mumsnet feed them content in return for free marketing and publicity?
There's usually a link to the thread or a mention of Mumsnet within those articles. It's fantastic PR and it's making MN money.

BelleBlueBell · 30/05/2021 10:34

This thread pops up periodically (in fact I think the same one was started just yesterday) and I don't really understand how anyone who uses the internet doesn't know that websites have always reposted content from other websites

Unless it's literally you first day of reading a newspaper website how do you not know that?

Teddy1970 · 30/05/2021 10:37

I feel the same OP, it's bloody annoying and lazy to boot, it's also the fact that someone's real life problems are used for entertainment purposes but as others have said there's not a great deal they can do, plus it's a huge advert for MN, you can also tell straight away which posts are going to appear in the papers, so I suppose we have to suck it up.

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/05/2021 10:39

Oh my sweet summer child.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 30/05/2021 10:43

Swear all throughout the OP? Does that help anymore? 😂

Years ago, someone had a name like ‘wankarsefuckshit’ (can’t remember exactly what it was but it was during a phase of the daily mail lifting threads.)

I was with her on a mutual support thread and it made quite funny reading Grin

grapewine · 30/05/2021 10:47

As PP said, we're the product. People should be mindful of that before they post anything anywhere on the Internet. MN has no commercial interest in stopping traffic coming to the site. It's a business. AIBU is lucrative.

OldkermitSippingtea · 30/05/2021 10:52

Bless your heart dear but no to your title, definitely not by posters. MNHQ can but they won't because it's part of their business - understandable.

Be careful what you post on the Internet, even "safe" ones. That's all there is to it.

Legoandloldolls · 30/05/2021 10:58

That's one reason I have many user names. Hopefully if you change names enough no one can link it back to you anyway.

AlfonsoTheMango · 30/05/2021 11:19

It's not "stealing".

There are two options: (1) don't share information in a public forum and (2) accept that once you share it, you lose control over who has access to it.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 30/05/2021 11:19

@cornflowersandbluebells I might change mine to 'FuckOffDailyMailYouCunts' 😂

FuckOffDailyMailYouCunts · 30/05/2021 11:20

I wondered if the name would already be taken but it isn't 😁

grapewine · 30/05/2021 11:36

😂😂 Brilliant!
midsomermurderess · 30/05/2021 11:40

As others have said, be mindful about what you post. If you don't want a load of Daily Mail readers sneering and grubbing through your personal issues, don't post it here. In any event, the very personal posts you see here are clearly entertainment for a lot of people on here too.

GreyhoundG1rl · 30/05/2021 11:43

Can we copyright all our posts?!
🤣🤣🤣. Of course you can't!

missmopple · 30/05/2021 11:53

Don't put stories on MN.

Simple.

FuckOffTabloids · 30/05/2021 19:03

The copyright question was a joke (hence the !) but the lazy journalism thing is just so crap. I once set up a go fund me page for a local family who had gone through a very difficult time. Our local rag just copied and pasted the story I'd written on go fund me and published it as their own story. Totally rubbish. Can't even be arsed to write their own articles (it is a terrible local newspaper, notoriously inaccurate).

I appreciate the income for Mnet angle but shouldn't journalists (whose papers will be making HUGE revenue from advertising) be required to come up with original content rather than just stealing it from other places? Genuine question!

Oh and you patronising buggers with your bless yous and sweet summer wotsits can fuck off Daily Mail Halo

MN is a massive website. I wonder how many people read that thread on here Vs how many read it in the Sun. I think sometimes people post on here without thinking of how many people will read it regardless of lazy journalists.

Justanticipating · 30/05/2021 20:27

I thought this too, and feel really anxious for the people that have posted because they've come on MN thinking it was a smaller audience and less chance of it being outing but if its on Fb the people involved are very likely to see them.
I thought permission would have to be granted from the Op but clearly not.
