Ffs. DS croup. Supposed to be going on holiday in the morning

Whatnowwhy · 29/05/2021 03:50

Long awaited trip away in caravan for a couple of nights. Ds started with a bit of a cold yesterday as did the rest of us earlier in the week ( all fine now)
But as usual when he has a cold he woke up in the night with a croupy cough.
I’m 99.999 sure he’ll be absolutely fine in morning and benefit from some relaxing time in the fresh air but now I’m thinking we need to do the ‘right’ thing and test and isolate instead 😭
Kids will be beyond gutted.

What would others do? According to official data there have been less than 3 cases in local area for past few weeks.

Rest of us have been LFT throughout and all negative

I’d go

OneMamaAndHerGirl · 29/05/2021 06:50

He hasn’t got covid. He’s got a cold, my daughter always wakes up coughing in the night when she has a cold. Go and enjoy your holiday

mayblossominapril · 29/05/2021 06:57

I’d go he’s got croup, lots of little ones seem to have croup atm.

It's not a persistent cough?

whataballbag · 29/05/2021 07:03

Croup cough is VERY obvious, and you'll know it a mile off if they've had it before.

I'd go

Tonkerbea · 29/05/2021 07:09

Go OP. Just maybe hold off on indoor activities with others until you're sure it's croup. Enjoy your holiday!

Whatnowwhy · 29/05/2021 07:18

I’m quite encouraged by these replies. He’s still asleep atm and sounding snotty but no more coughing.

We wouldn’t be indoors with other people at all

I might give him a LFT (yes I know they’re not supposed to be used for symptoms as less sensitive but I’ve never really got that logic because surely if you are symptomatic there is more virus to detect?)

Anyway. I’ll see how he is when he wakes up.

Can you test and just go on holiday a day late? If you are wrong and you start an outbreak in a caravan park you will probably make the news. The caravan park in Wales did.

It seems really selfish to go without testing.

Macarena1990 · 29/05/2021 07:21

If it's croup the cough sounds like a sea lion. If that's the case go!

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/05/2021 07:22

Do a pcr test ASAP

But do you want a child with croup in a caravan anyway? If it’s cold or wet at all that will be miserable.

ZoBo123 · 29/05/2021 07:23

LFT tests don't work for under 11s so wouldn't bother if you have all had one already. I would go especially if you are not indoors

DarcyLewis · 29/05/2021 07:24

I don’t know what I’d do in your situation, but just as an fyi, when my toddler had covid her cough was exactly like a croupy bark.
She was coughing occasionally in the day rather than just at night though.

The last PCR test we had to do came back the same day.

elsaesmeralda · 29/05/2021 07:26

Croup cough is very obvious. My ds has the same atm, wakes up in the night/morning barking like a seal, once up he's fine again.
Have a nice holiday 👍🏻

user1471543094 · 29/05/2021 07:26

I'd definitely go

feliznavidad2 · 29/05/2021 07:27

@ZoBo123 what do you, 'LFTs don't work for under 11s'???!!! Of course they do. But they're not the appropriate test given the circumstances.!

OP, if it's a continuous cough (or more than three episodes in 24 hours), you need to get a PCR test performed. This isn't a new requirement...

The results of which are coming back so much more quickly now, usually within 24 hours.

Earlgrey666 · 29/05/2021 07:34

I would go

Looneytune253 · 29/05/2021 07:39

Go and get a test and go a day later. It will set your minds at rest and if anyone at the caravan park asks you'll have that proof. Results come back in around 12 hours now

DistrictCommissioner · 29/05/2021 07:39

Croup is going around at the moment, certainly where I am anyway.

Fruityfriday · 29/05/2021 07:41

I think you need a pcr. There is always the chance its not.

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 29/05/2021 07:43

Not where I am they don’t. Used to always be within 24 hours. Last weekend was closer to 36.
WeAllHaveWings · 29/05/2021 07:49

It would be responsible to do a pcr before going. Croup symptoms (caused by upper airway infection) can be caused by a variety of viruses, it is still unclear whether that could include covid.

TheUndoingProject · 29/05/2021 08:00

Of course you need to do a PCT test, however inconvenient it is to your travel plans.

TheUndoingProject · 29/05/2021 08:00

*PCR!

ZenNudist · 29/05/2021 08:03

I'd go

Peppapeg · 29/05/2021 08:04

Yes this, sounds horrendous. Of course you should test and isolate, but I doubt you will be swayed by strangers on the Internet.
