Ffs. DS croup. Supposed to be going on holiday in the morning

Long awaited trip away in caravan for a couple of nights. Ds started with a bit of a cold yesterday as did the rest of us earlier in the week ( all fine now)
But as usual when he has a cold he woke up in the night with a croupy cough.
I’m 99.999 sure he’ll be absolutely fine in morning and benefit from some relaxing time in the fresh air but now I’m thinking we need to do the ‘right’ thing and test and isolate instead 😭
Kids will be beyond gutted.

What would others do? According to official data there have been less than 3 cases in local area for past few weeks.

Rest of us have been LFT throughout and all negative

You need to do a PCR test. Get it down quickly, it'll come back pretty sharpish probably and then you'll know.

yikesanotherbooboo · 29/05/2021 08:10

Please get a test . If it is negative you can then go on holiday if she is well enough.

Cleverpolly3 · 29/05/2021 08:13

A caravan
With a little one and what could be croup?

Hmm

Not sure why people are dismissing croup as a cold. It can be very serious. My ds was blue lighted to hospital with croup after turning blue, as was I as a child. I wouldn't be going too far from medical care if I was you OP. When my ds's airways closed up it was the middle of the night and completely silent, as is often the case with croup.

karmakameleon · 29/05/2021 08:27

DS gets croup and if he started with a croupy cough today, I’d absolutely get a PCR test, just as we have every time for the last year. As PP said, croup could be caused by coronavirus and I’d rather be safe.

GetTheStartyParted · 29/05/2021 08:35

OP, I would not go without testing.

@Zoladrama I had the same experience when DS was 3, it was terrifying. He didn't even have a cold, put him to bed and about 2 hours later I heard him trying to shout me. He was quite unresponsive within minutes. I was on my way to the car with him, panicking, when a police officer saw us and called an ambulance. We were blue lighted there.

His recovery was rapid once treated. I had no experience or knowledge of croup but most seem to experience the cough and that's it. Truly thankful he woke and managed to shout me.

Onceuponatime1818 · 29/05/2021 08:44

I know 4 kids ending up in the children’s hospital with croup.

I wouldn’t be going to a caravan if I suspected my child had croup.

Whatnowwhy · 29/05/2021 08:47

We’re getting a test. Hopefully it will come back quickly.
This is entirely consistent with his usual pattern when having a cold but these are the times we’re in.
Gutted

DS always needed prednisone for croup. We also spent a long time in the bathroom with a hot shower running.

Even now (13) he gets the croup cough every October half term without fail.

Sorry but I wouldn't be happy to go to a caravan right now - can you see a hospital based GP?

Zoladrama · 29/05/2021 09:00

@GetTheStartyParted

It's probably the most panicked I've been and I'm usually very good at remaining calm in emergencies. Mine woke me up by standing over my bed tapping me and when I turned on the light he was blue and unable to talk. Thankfully I do have some knowledge on what to do so was straight out in the garden but definitely not an experience I'd want to repeat!

Peppapeg · 29/05/2021 09:17

DS always needed prednisone for croup.

DS has had to have a few courses of this, works well but seems to send him super hyper!

Notonthestairs · 29/05/2021 09:19

Yes it made DS quite "energetic" too - but not as bad as Piriton which literally left him bouncing off the walls and gave me a nosebleed (accidental headbutt!)

AlmostSummer21 · 29/05/2021 09:30

You're doing the right thing getting him tested.

That aside, I wouldn't be taking a child with croup away from home.

How old is he?

Sorry your break away is being spoilt, but thinking the traffic jams your not sitting in!! (Silver lining)

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 29/05/2021 11:36

Hope the test comes back quick and you don’t miss too much of your holiday.

hopingtochangeeachtime · 29/05/2021 12:27

My DS seems to have mild croup too, he barking when coughing but very occasional episodes. It seems 2 others in his class have it and have had negative Covid tests. We have just been for a PCR test. Hoping the result comes back quickly.

Pomtastic · 29/05/2021 12:32

Fingers crossed it comes back quickly! Our test results came back in 16.5 hours last weekend - they can be very quick.

Hope he's feeling better soon & you have a lovely holiday Smile

TheUndoingProject · 29/05/2021 13:40

Well done op, you’ve done the right thing. I hope the result comes back for you quickly

Cleverpolly3 · 30/05/2021 14:19

Have you had your results back yet @Whatnowwhy ?
Hope he’s ok

Whatnowwhy · 30/05/2021 18:31

Negative.
He’s still snotty but had a better night. We’re on our way!

everybodysang · 30/05/2021 18:37

That's so good - I think you did the right thing and I hope you have a brilliant time.

Whatnowwhy · 30/05/2021 20:12

It’s put me off booking anywhere else at the moment though. Especially abroad. Imagine the same situation the night before a flight.

I feel the same, but even around soft play sessions or whatever, we have had to isolate quite a bit and it's such a waste of money.
hopingtochangeeachtime · 30/05/2021 21:52

My DS has had croup too, also got a negative test today thank goodness.
