If money was no object where would you go?

I'm in a very lucky position of owning two properties and having a kid going to board next year. I also have a lump sum coming in around that time (over 250k) and am feeling that I can finally "relax" and spend some time on me. I'm tempted to spend some time exploring the world but as a 40+ year old lady I feel out of touch with what kind of travelling I should be looking at. Obviously I don't want to drain all of it, but having some ideas and dreams would go a long way! Or is travelling a massive no-no, even next year? What else would you do with the money to make you feel exciting again?

I'd go to Egypt and see the pyramids, Sweden to the ice hotel , Japan, the carribean, transylvania, cernobyl (sp?)

@futuremoneyinbank What a lovely luxury OP 😍

Japan looks amazing to me! I would also love to go to Africa - Giraffe Manor looks like my dream 😍
Bora Bora would be amazing!

I worked in a shop near a cruise port in the UK for a few years and every so often a big ship would come in with “Round The World” passengers on it. One couple that were from the US showed me pictures on their iPad of where they’d been so far and it looked absolutely incredible! I think they were on the ship for about 4/5 months in total!!

Branleuse · 28/05/2021 16:51

if money was no object id buy a swish luxury camper and take a year off to travel round europe

reluctantbrit · 28/05/2021 16:55

Guided tour through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia

Followed by a long stay somewhere tropical to relax after the tour.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/05/2021 17:01

Bhutan. Expensive but amazing.

But what you need is to ask yourself a few questions:

Max/min temperatures. I don't like either 30 above or below.

How much street hassle can you cope with? Egypt levels or Germany levels?
Really active or really passive. Trekking the Himalaya or a hammock in the Cook Islands?
Lots of people or not? Japan or Mongolia?
Clean and shiny or dusty and a little smelly? Singapore or Uganda?

History or modern?

And so on.

Arrierttyclock · 28/05/2021 17:07

South Africa- a safari was the best experience of my life

kizzywizz · 28/05/2021 17:11

Another vote for the world cruise.

Bananarice · 28/05/2021 17:21

I would follow natural disaster and stay there for a maximum 1 month. The feeling of actually witnessing helping people in need is not something I can articulate.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 28/05/2021 17:48

Id like to see Great Barrier Reef before it disappears. Plus its relatively safe place to go at the moment.

MamaNewtNewt · 28/05/2021 17:53

Definitely Japan it just looks amazing.

TheMotherlode · 28/05/2021 17:54

I spent some time travelling around Canada in my early 20s. It felt like a really safe place for a lone woman, and is incredibly beautiful.

The US is great fun to travel around too.

loopyloo12 · 28/05/2021 18:33

Japan, San Francisco, Singapore,Route 66
Are just a couple I want to do

Chunkymenrock · 28/05/2021 18:34

Switzerland or USA.

Moules · 28/05/2021 18:44

This is a very fun game!

Chilean Patagonia. It’s the kind of place that would suit your budget with some of the best scenery in the world and a once in a lifetime feel. Check out the Explora, Awasi and Tierra hotels. You could do Antarctica or Argentina while in the region.

San Francisco would also be a great place to base yourself as a solo traveller for a couple of months. I think it’s definitely best enjoyed living like a local.

A massive splurge hotel where we spent our honeymoon is Ballyfin Demesne in Ireland, it’s been named Conde Nast best hotel in the world a couple of years ago and the level of luxury was insane!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/05/2021 18:53

@Chunkymenrock

Switzerland or USA.
This is why is so subjective.

These countries would be almost the last places on my list. I think the USA would only be followed by places which are next to impossible like North Korea or Somalia.

AppleKatie · 28/05/2021 18:53

The Galapagos- cruise
Costa Rica
Canada
Anywhere in the Caribbean

In that order please - can I come?

Mummyneedsacoffee · 28/05/2021 18:58

One of my favourite places I’ve been lucky to visit is Hawaii - I would 100% go there again.

I’d love to go to the Maldives too Smile

MsMeNz · 28/05/2021 18:59

Hawaii or Japan

thisisfineihavewine · 28/05/2021 19:03

Iceland
Peru
New Zealand

futuremoneyinbank · 29/05/2021 16:12

Lots of votes for Japan! Yes am tempted to book the Explorer tours too but agree I'd want to go somewhere to relax afterwards. I've been to Mauritius and loved it to relax (and pedalo!) but usually I like a bit more to do/food to try/culture to get a sense of, so Japan seems to fit the bill. A tour of Asia looks like the way forward. I'm not great with extreme heat Mrs TP - anything over 32 is too much for me really.

Isn't there a beach in America with glass pebbles washed down over the years? I think it might actually be called Glass Beach. I can't decide if I want to go there or really really don't Grin

OP posts:
StellaAndCrow · 29/05/2021 16:28

I'd go and do a jade carving course in New Zealand.

StellaAndCrow · 29/05/2021 16:30

Yes, Davenport for the glass. (or you could go to Seaham near Sunderland, lots of sea glass there!)

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2021 16:30

Isn't there a beach in America with glass pebbles washed down over the years?

It looks pretty but it's literally made of rubbish. Grin

LunaNorth · 29/05/2021 17:04

Mexico. I adore it.

WhateverJohnnyMcNofriends · 29/05/2021 20:30

I'd go to Argentina and hop across to Antarctica on an ice breaker. Failing that I'd love to see the Maldives or Bora Bora or The Galapagos.

I'd like to go to Japan but I refuse to go while they're still whaling and pretending it's for "scientific research"
