How is my antique cupboard supposed to hang on the wall?

I bought an oak antique wall cupboard. It's very large, a metre wide & 1.5m high. It's got a heavily carved front with a garland of flowers hanging down from carved bows - so it has a definite 'right way up'. The bottom edge is carved in a semicircle, so it can't balance & lean against the wall. There are absolutely no fixings on the back. No holes, no metal plates, nothing. Just a flush plain back. How was it ever hung on the wall?

Could it be the top half of a larger bit of furniture? Hard to guess without seeing it!

BlueBrolly · 26/05/2021 20:43

I should add, the back is original, nothing's been added or taken away. The place I bought it from can't give me any information.

It's not the top half of anything because it has an integrated curved base.

A picture would help my DH knows a bit about antique furniture

No-nail?

Only joking. Grin

Everleigh2021 · 26/05/2021 20:49

would it have sat on brackets?

BlueBrolly · 26/05/2021 20:54

a hole has been cut in the centre but that was for the last owners cables

I think it would be too heavy to sit on brackets

that looks upside down....to me anyway

Palavah · 26/05/2021 20:57

Got a photo of the back?

The one you linked to looks upside down to me.

Me too.
Justmuddlingalong · 26/05/2021 20:57

Does the curved end not go at the top?

BruceAndNosh · 26/05/2021 20:58

To me it looks "right" with the curved bit at the top!

YanTanTethera123 · 26/05/2021 20:59

It’s upside down. I’ve never seen a Flemish cupboard with the fancy bits at the bottom!

BlueBrolly · 26/05/2021 20:59

If it was the other way up the flowers would be upside down.

what does the back look like? could it have cross-bars that would rest on a baton?

BlueBrolly · 26/05/2021 21:02

I'm struggling a bit with links, but whilst I try to get a pic of the front, whatever way it goes, there is no means to hang it. I'm at a loss to understand how it was done.

If you look at the top of the fruit they hang from bows & the garlands hang down. There are no battens on the back secure enough to hold it's weight - only for construction

Everleigh2021 · 26/05/2021 21:11

at the top and bottom flat hooks would be attached

buckleten · 26/05/2021 21:11

That looks upside down to me!

parietal · 26/05/2021 21:12

seeing the carving in detail, I agree now with the vote for 'upsidedown'. the plants should be growing upwards.

www.loveantiques.com/items/listings/antique-flemish-carved-oak-wall-cupboard-LA219881 I've flipped the picture...the original looks upside down. Could it stand up on its own the other way up (like my picture)?

Could it possibly have been a removable fixture that slotted into a part of the wall? Perhaps a wall that would have had lots of wood paneling?
