I sliced the top of my thumb

And I’m feeling very very sorry for myself Sad

I was cutting up veg for dinner and I sliced the fleshy part of my thumb with my tiny sharp knife. It felt vile 🤢

DP kept the DC away from me while I dealt with it so I sorted myself out. But basically want my mum. And am worried I need a stitch.

Just needed a moan. I think DP thinks I’m over-reacting.

Oh that's so painful. I sympathise.

DH did similar on his little finger on Sunday evening - he took the top off. Kitchen sink looked a bit like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre! It never stopped bleeding so he took himself off to the Minor Injuries Unit to have it looked at and dressed properly.

You moan as much as you like OP!

Eaumyword · 25/05/2021 20:43

You poor thing! Heaps of sympathy from me Flowers
Last year I nearly severed 2 fingers being a complete twat shoving a can into another (tidying and rushing.) My DH was fuming at me. Got my own back as I fainted onto him (I am quite heavy!)
I did have the presence of mind before fainting to run them under the tap and he bandaged me. SO MUCH BLOOD!
We went to A&E and I needed a proper dressing, glue and a Tetanus jab.
Was a nightmare as I needed dressing changes and I'd done my best to stay home and protect the NHS-but had just been a clumsy prat![Grin Lesson harshly and painfully learnt and it took a long time to heal.
So virtual hugs OP, feel better soon.

ApplesandAardvarks · 25/05/2021 20:45

Poor you. I feel ill just imaging it. It must be so painful. I hope that you feel better soon.

Rainallnight · 25/05/2021 20:47

Your poor DP! I think that sounds worse than mine.

It’s SO sore though. I’ve got two plasters on it very tightly and I’m a bit worried about what’ll happen when I take them off.

I once cut into my finger while slicing crumpets and all the yellow fatty stuff under my skin bubbled out. I'm not squeamish but fuck me that was gross. Went to minor injuries and they just steristripped it, no need for a stitch.

Hope you feel better soon OP Flowers

Windy1234 · 25/05/2021 20:57

Oh no you have my sympathies, i did this cutting a bagel in half...the pain omg worse than having a baby 🤣 i went to minor injuries and they steri stripped it and gave tetanus jab

Gingernaut · 25/05/2021 21:00

I sliced the base of my finger trying to cut open a grip seal bag with a sharp blade.

Didn't learn my lesson and sliced through the entire layer of skin on the tip of the same finger, doing exactly the same thing a year later.

I have two impressive scars.

perhapstomorrow · 25/05/2021 21:10

I did this about a month ago rushing to slice open a bag of mozzarella. I was so lucky not to take the tip completely off as we had just sharpened our knives. I didn't get a stitch but kept it in place by regularly changing a plaster. A month later and the very tip still feels a bit strange. You have my sympathy as it's horrible. I hope it mends quickly.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2021 21:14

A few years ago I cut my thumb on a tin really badly, blood everywhere.
I needed a tetanus and even now the scar gets sore so you have my full sympathy.

Muddydoor · 25/05/2021 21:18

Did you stick it back on OP? My Mum did that once and I still shiver about it, but you wouldn’t tell if you looked now many years later.

Rainallnight · 25/05/2021 21:26

@Muddydoor it didn’t come off altogether. It’s a big flap held down with some tight plasters Blush.

Loving these stories though you are all making me wonder if I should have gone to minor injuries!

OP posts:
Rainallnight · 25/05/2021 21:27

And thank you for the sympathy, it’s in short supply here! Grin

Muddydoor · 25/05/2021 21:31

Only go to minor injuries if you’re losing lots of blood. Totally not necessary otherwise.

PatriciaHolm · 25/05/2021 21:33

eeeek! much sympathy. I sliced into my finger with a supermarket pate knife (so super sharp, I was working behind the deli counter) many years ago and still have the battle scar....

I think finger flesh wounds generally heal well as they are quite fleshy and you can stick them together with plasters, as long as it's clean.

Lettuceforlunch · 25/05/2021 21:37

Poor you! I’ve done this too, right across the end of my thumb. There was a little flap left so it was like a lid that opened and closed 🤣 Had to get it dressed by the nurse at the Dr’s. Hurt like hell for quite a small cut, relatively speaking!

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2021 21:42

I did this, years ago, my daughter was about five, I was alone with her as husband was on a work trip, and I was cutting up an apple for her and cut off the pad of my thumb, it was literally just hanging on at the bottom edge. It really grossed me out.

Plasters didn’t work, so I needed to wrap it with more kitchen roll than you’d believe as I couldn’t go to a&e . I then made an emergency appt with the gp the next day as it just wouldn’t stop bleeding and I still didn’t want to drag my daughter to a&e. It was after school too, so had been bleeding for about 18 hours straight.

The gp to be fair was lovely about it, when I explained I was sorry but needed help and didn’t want to sit in a&e alone with my daughter dor hours and had had to work, but it just wouldn’t stop bleeding, and she peeled the avalanche of sticky kitchen roll off it, cleaned it up, and stitched it for me.😂

It’s all fine now, just I have a faint semi circle scar. So if it stops bleeding your good. If it doesn’t, yeah you need it stitching.

Eaumyword · 25/05/2021 22:36

Good advice about A and E or not.
The absolutely lovely nurse told me I was right to have come in as they waited for 2hrs for the bleeding to stop and I'd definitely needed a Tetanus as I'd lacerated them deeply on the serrated edge of a tin (dirty)
All I remember was refusing to look and asking her if it was bad or good! She said 'bad I'm afraid'!
So if you've managed to stop the bleeding and the knife had previously been clean, you should be ok with a good clean at home and a dressing if you have one.
I'm sorry your DP isn't sympathetic. Mine wasn't either. You know you've been daft, don't need telling, but a bit of love wouldn't go amiss. Mine really made it clear what a problem I'd caused.
Good that your DC didn't see you. My teenage DC witnessed it and was extremely distressed and also I'm sorry to say, distressed at the lack of care shown by my DH, who finished cooking tea and ate it before taking me to A&E. Ok, I had fainted and needed time to come round properly but come on...!Sad
All the best - make sure it is nice and clean with a clean bandage/plaster on.

HalfCakeHalfBiscuit · 25/05/2021 22:44

I once chopped the entire top off my finger when slicing an onion. Thought I'd just nicked my finger, then looked and saw a little bit of finger sat on the chopping board. Went to casualty, they X-rayed it and said I was lucky as I has just missed the bone. Wrapped it up and sent me home. I now have a slightly more pointy finger than normal that has no feeling on the end

Sarahlou63 · 25/05/2021 22:50

I did the same thing, tried to cut some frozen cheese and sliced through the pad of my thumb. Wrapped it in a tea towel and drove to the hospital where they had to put in 5 stitches - got home, starving, to find the bloody dogs had eaten all the cheese!

Artesia · 25/05/2021 22:55

I took a huge piece out of my thumb slicing some potatoes with a mandolin. Was so sharp I didn’t even feel it at first, then the blood came Shock

I went to see the nurse at our local surgery, who used steristrips and then dressed it. It healed well but took a while to get full feeling back in the tip of the thumb.

Always wince now when I see people using mandolins on cooking shows!

Eaumyword · 26/05/2021 09:10

How are you and your finger doing this morning OP?

Rainallnight · 26/05/2021 10:10

Thank you so much for asking! It’s pretty sore but no blood has leaked through the plasters, so I guess it’s under control. I do need to change the plasters but I’m a bit worried about looking. 🤢

OP posts:
Eaumyword · 26/05/2021 11:12

Bless you! Well, no more blood is a brill sign.
Try not to look too much when changing the plasters and don't be tempted to poke and prod. It needs to seal and heal.
Just get the plaster changed and be done - looking at the injury will make you feel faint!FlowersCake

spiderlight · 26/05/2021 11:36

Ouch!! I sliced into the side of my finger and my nail with a serrated bread knife last week cutting a bread roll. I watched myself doing it while thinking 'You'll need to move that finger in a second...' Hmm It wasn't bad enough to need stitching or anything but it was too inconvenient to have a massive plaster around the tip of my finger because I basically need to type all day, so I ended up sticking it back together with a small piece of Gorilla Tape (basically a DIY steristrip).

Sorry your parner's not being sympathetic about it :( Mine is used to my epic clumsiness now but he's still nice about it.

Eaumyword · 26/05/2021 11:41

Shock Hardcore @spiderlight sticking it together yourself! You Bear Grylls, you!
So glad I'm not the only one being epically clumsy. I have a death wish against my right big toe, having dropped several cans/tins on it. I now have galloping arthritis...
