Wallpaper feature wall - Yay or Nay?

I'm completely redoing my bedroom and it will be green. I am wondering whether I should have one wall wallpapered: a bit of a feature wall. There are so many nice patterns now, but have I missed the boat? Is it terribly naff?
Room will have medium dark wooden floors, some dark green painted furniture and fairly industrial bedside cabinets and lights. I prefer a modern to a traditional look.

Also considering doing skirting in a darker green than the walls, but I guess that's a question for another thread!

I say have what you want. I am thinking of doing this in my lounge.

BettyUnderswoob · 19/05/2021 11:06

Thanks, nana

I'm so indecisive that I don't know if it is what I want, though!

I'd say no. Feature walls are a bit, well, naff.

I agree its your home, so do what you would like. But I also agree feature wallpaper is a bit naff now.

Spied · 19/05/2021 11:11

A bit naff

Tuckedinbelly · 19/05/2021 11:11

Do what you like but I say do every wall with wallpaper and paint your woodwork and ceiling the same colour as each other.

RickiTarr · 19/05/2021 11:14

Papering just the chimney breast wall or opposite walls was a common thing for decades, not just the noughties trend. Do whatever you think looks nice.

BettyUnderswoob · 19/05/2021 11:17

Thanks, all.

I'm getting the distinct idea here that one papered wall is naff!

All papered and woodwork/ceiling matching sounds interesting, but I have several paintings to put up, so need mostly plain walls.

I think they are dated but if you like it then go for it!! It’s your home, do what makes you happy.

RickiTarr · 19/05/2021 11:23

but I have several paintings to put up, so need mostly plain walls.

In that case can you do the window wall (fiddly I know) and the wall opposite it and keep the other walls painted something really light?

Crazylikechocolate · 19/05/2021 11:24

If your staying and it would make you happy do what suits you , if you are planning to sell in the near future or are tidying up the decorating prior to selling , then no as it's a bit dated and personal

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2021 11:30

Assuming you aren't going to have endless style police traipsing through your bedroom critiquing your decor, why on earth wouldn't you just decorate it to your own taste?

I'm not sure about the dark skirting boards, but otherwise it sounds nice.

BettyUnderswoob · 19/05/2021 11:36

Oh, I know @BarbaraofSeville, I know... but I'm not sure if it IS what I like!
Took me literally years to decide on my new kitchen!

I had a feature walk in my bedroom and hated it! The problem is is anchors the decor. It's a fixed object around which everything is centred.

With painted walls it's easy to just freshen up a room. I've just repainted my bedroom which was a shitty mustard (don't ask - still don't know what I was thinking) to a lovely pale creamy yellow. It's took a couple of days and is a 100% improvement. A complete transformation.

But when I got rid of my feature wall it was a right messy faff. Scraping and steaming.

What about a painted feature wall? Maybe paint the wall behind your headboard a different colour? Then if you don't like it, it's easy to paint over.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 19/05/2021 11:45

I think it looks nice. More interesting than plain walls but less overwhelming than all wallpaper.

bakingdemon · 19/05/2021 12:05

I love a feature wall! Wallpapering a whole room can be quite overpowering, but having it on a single wall, or in alcoves, can look great.

goldenshoe · 19/05/2021 12:30

Depends on the wallpaper but can look great if done well. If you like it go for it!

Brogues · 19/05/2021 13:05

Yay from me. It’s your house.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/05/2021 16:05

I like feature walls. They're a good way to be bold without overwhelming.
I'm not a neutral, minimal person.
I decorate for myself not fashion.

Mydogisagentleman · 19/05/2021 16:08

I’ve got a feature wall in my downstairs toilet.
I love it and it really cheers me up, the rest of my house is restrained and grey, the toilet is a jungle with birds of paradise.
My husband is not a fan

Retrievemysanity · 19/05/2021 16:09

A yes from me! But another possible nice option is getting some mdf and painting some darker green panelling behind your bed. Not sure if you know what I mean but it seems to be in all the home mags at the moment.

NoviceGardenLady · 19/05/2021 16:14

Noooooooo

Feature walls are awful unless you're going for a really really OTT paper.

Even then, I'd invert the idea. Have three walls in the really OTT paper and one 'feature' wall that's a plain colour, complementary to the OTT paper.

I have very OTT wallpaper on all four walls of my living room and dining room but I've 'muted' it a little bit by only having it up to the picture rail.

BrilliantBetty · 19/05/2021 16:28

No, wallpaper is too much.
If you must do a feature wall, just paint.

I probably wouldn't

BettyUnderswoob · 19/05/2021 18:37

Sorry!
I have concluded that I do like the look of a feature wall, even though it may be a bit passé...

Still not sure whether or not to have one though.🤔

I'll leave that wall till last and do everything else first!
