I don’t own the road but ...

I know that I don’t have any say over who parks on the public road outside my house. And yet this is annoying me so much, so this is just a big moan!

Someone on the road near me (where there is no parking) has started parking a recovery truck outside my house. It isn’t really roadworthy and has no tax. I’ve reported the lack of tax to the council, but nothing seems to have been done.

Since then, the recovery truck has brought several other vehicles to the street and left these on the street. Once they arrive they never seem to leave.

I can’t park outside my house anymore and don’t know if I’ll be able to anytime soon. I can’t park my own car in one of these spaces and leave it there because I have to go to work in it everyday, and these cars have all arrived while I was out.

It’s so frustrating but there’s nothing at all I can do apart from moan, so thank you if you read this. It’s making me like my home (now a junk yard for forgotten cars) so much less!

People will be along in a mo to say YABU, but this would piss me off greatly too

otterbaby · 18/05/2021 20:53

We had the same issue. Someone local was buying shitty, run-down cars and fixing them up, but was storing them on our road. Randomly they always seemed to be just outside our house. It's maddening! We just called and reported them constantly as they rarely had tax or MOT. A few of them got ticketed or towed away.

Scottishskifun · 18/05/2021 20:56

Keep calling the council they have waste/fly tipping officers who can run DVLA checks. They will then give notice to the owner to move the vehicle or get it uplifted as an abandoned vehicle. It usually takes a few weeks though.

Sometimes a note to say that it's been reported to the council is enough to stop them as its a load of hassle and then they risk the fine!

Council won’t do anything- it isn’t their remit.
Report to the DVLA- they will put a clamp on it and then eventually remove it to be destroyed

Report to dvla not the council.

Fluellablue · 18/05/2021 21:09

Sorry, yes that is where I reported it. I wrongly thought that went to the local council. It’s a form I filled in with all the details. Maybe I’ll just report it again anyway.

Thank you for reading and responding. I do know it’s not up to me who parks there, but it’s so annoying.

@otterbaby I hope your situation got sorted in the end? It sounds exactly the same.

After 3 cars were towed, they eventually stopped. It did go on for nearly a year though 😩

Bluntness100 · 19/05/2021 09:18

How do you know it has no tax? No discs are displayed now.

KaleSlayer · 19/05/2021 09:24

You can check online now if a vehicle has tax and MOT.

You can look up online if it has tax and mot easily. On the gov website

Snap! You can also check if it's insured.

Donitta · 19/05/2021 09:28

If he’s running a business from a residential address and occupying the street with cars or other business materials, then you can report to the council. Also report any cars with no tax.

KaleSlayer · 19/05/2021 09:28

Smile I didn’t know you could check insurance as well, that’s good.

Vinorosso74 · 19/05/2021 09:29

We had similar on a street I lived on (a number of years back) where someone was using the street to park old vans. I reported it to the council as did lots of the other neighbours; the culprit clearly didn't want to pay for land to keep these vehicles. It took a while but eventually the vans all went.

KonTikki · 19/05/2021 09:47

Keep on at the Local Council from the issue of running a business from his home address.
Eventually they will have to take action to stop him.

Goldenbear · 19/05/2021 09:52

We had similar and got our local ward councillor involved, it worked and they have gone now, it did take about a year to resolve.

Fluellablue · 19/05/2021 23:32

It’s getting worse and worse. Tonight he has brought another three cars, all untaxed and with no MOT or insurance. I have reported for lack of tax and MOT, but the website where I got the insurance information from says that you have to be the registered owner to access it. So I can hardly report the lack of insurance to the police if I’m not supposed to be able to find out, can I?

I know it probably sounds silly, but our lovely street had suddenly become a junk yard because one person has decided it suits him to do so. Good idea about asking the council regarding the business. Thank you.

Contact the neighbourhood policing team. You should able to find their details online, on Facebook, etc.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 20/05/2021 07:39

Any untaxed vehicle should not be parked on the public highway. If you tell the police these cars are not taxed or MoT'd they can find out they're not insured themselves.

Rillington · 20/05/2021 07:45

Report to DVLA in multiple names. It seems to work. The more reports they get they seem to take action.

HumunaHey · 20/05/2021 08:00

Yep.

This is slightly different from a case of the street being a public place to park - it's for the public, not business purposes.

FoxgloveBee · 20/05/2021 08:07

I know how you feel - we have someone in the street who keeps old cars and fixes them up (although they never seem to get fixed or go anywhere). There are currently 14 parked in both directions from his house. I live too far down the road for it to impact me personally but it is ridiculous. He sometimes leaves them in the MIDDLE of the road and people have to drive on the pavement to get round them.

sar302 · 20/05/2021 08:11

You're not alone! It's in the covenants of our house that we can't park any work vans on our drive - I assume to keep the oh so attractive 1970s ex-council estate, attractive Grin

Yet people can park ugly work vans just outside our house on the road. Which they do. Sigh...

NewMatress · 20/05/2021 08:40

I think there is something you can do if they're operating a business from home. That's not usually allowed without planning permission.
