I don’t own the road but ...

I know that I don’t have any say over who parks on the public road outside my house. And yet this is annoying me so much, so this is just a big moan!

Someone on the road near me (where there is no parking) has started parking a recovery truck outside my house. It isn’t really roadworthy and has no tax. I’ve reported the lack of tax to the council, but nothing seems to have been done.

Since then, the recovery truck has brought several other vehicles to the street and left these on the street. Once they arrive they never seem to leave.

I can’t park outside my house anymore and don’t know if I’ll be able to anytime soon. I can’t park my own car in one of these spaces and leave it there because I have to go to work in it everyday, and these cars have all arrived while I was out.

It’s so frustrating but there’s nothing at all I can do apart from moan, so thank you if you read this. It’s making me like my home (now a junk yard for forgotten cars) so much less!

I know I haven't posted on this since last week, but I'm feeling a bit frustrated this morning about this situation again.

Over the course of the last week, ten cars without tax, MOT and insurance have all been dunped outside. There's quite a high turnover though, and they are being sold to people quickly and then more arrive. All the activity takes place in the middle of the night, which is noisy and disruptive.

I've contacted the DVLA about the lack of tax (several times for some of them) but nothing seems to have happened.

I've contacted the police about the lack of MOT and insurance, but apparently unless they catch them driving the cars, there is nothing they can do. They said to ring when it is being driven, but I imagine they'd have gone or stopped by the time anyone arrived.

I am just so frustrated that I pay my insurance and tax and MOT my car, when it seems so easy to not bother and very little can be done Angry.

Oh and I contacted the council, who said enforcement is a very lengthy process and tried to put me off following it up. It seems one of those things that nothing can be done about.

Have you reported the business to the council. Running a junk car sales from home and using the street as his personal storage facility.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/05/2021 13:16

Contact your councillors, not just the council. Maybe even your MP.

Keep complaining to the council, it’s clearly dodgy.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/05/2021 13:33

In the middle of the night? Weird and I'd be thinking there may be something else going on. Environmental Health may be able to do something if this is creating noise in a residential area at unsociable hours. Take photos and videos if you feel you can do so safely.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/05/2021 13:34

I second contacting your actual councillor - they do tend to be able to get things moving.

theemmadilemma · 26/05/2021 13:56

Keep complaining to the council. Do you talk to your neighbours, can some of you get together?

NotCrazyDogLady · 26/05/2021 14:00

@Fluellablue OP this would drive me absolutely potty!

I agree with PP, you should definitely contact your local councillor and get them on your side.

Hope it gets better for you, people can be so unbelievably selfish

Wegobshite · 26/05/2021 14:01

Check DVLA to see if there is no tax
Report to the council ( you need to get the right department
Tell them that you can smell petrol 😂 you must do this .
They should ticket it and remove the car on day 15

Wegobshite · 26/05/2021 14:03

I do this regularly as I have a similar problem
The cars are either moved once they get the ticket or it’s towed away
But telling them that you can smell constant petrol like the car is leaking petrol pretty much always works as it’s dangerous

ComingToGetUBarbara · 26/05/2021 14:12

My FIL has this with his neighbours over the road - not working on cars but they park their two cars outside FILs house on the road and it's a fairly busy street and the cars never seem to move.
FIL was doing some gardening on the front the other day and some angry driver wound their windows down and shouted at him saying "those cars are always there! Get them shifted!" Shock

Fluellablue · 26/05/2021 14:12

@Wegobshite They definitely have no tax, and I have filled in many forms to the DVLA about this. I rang up today, and they said it can take many weeks to be followed up, by which time the ones I've reported will have gone and new ones will have taken their place. Reporting them is almost becoming a full time job Wink and not one has been ticketed! How did the ones near you get ticketed - was it the petrol comments, and did you say that to the police or DVLA.

Quite honestly, I've spoken to the police, DVLA and the council and nobody really seems concerned. Maybe the councillor is a good idea, thank you.

@ComingToGetUBarbara This is virtually exactly the same as us - I'm pretty sure the neighbours think this is our doing, as the recovery truck and dodgy cars are right outside our house.

There was nowhere at all to park at the weekend, and every time a neighbour glared through my window I wanted to run out and explain!

electricdreamssheep · 26/05/2021 14:19

Time to start knocking on doors and consulting the neighbours. If you all band together and complaint to the culprit - presumably another neighbour - you might make some headway?

How annoying for you, I totally get why you're cross.

Fluellablue · 26/05/2021 14:26

I've always been someone who would never break the law or the rules and worry about doing so, even unintentionally. This has sort of made me realise how disinterested the authorities really are in things like this (pretty minor compared to other things, I know). It's eye-opening and sort of depressing Confused!

Reported to the DVLA
But the council has it own department for abandoned cars It was the council who got the car removed and who I mentioned about petrol leaking
It literally took 15 days each time
The last one was last summer in July -haven’t had any since 😂

Do exactly that run out and ask glarey neighbours to report them too. More noise makes it more likely that something will be done.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 26/05/2021 14:31

I remember what got the two dead cars in our road moved.
On the report to DVLA I did say one was leaking onto the pavement and it was rotting the cement away, aswell as both not being MOT'd
They were an enviromental hazzard.

Goodweatherforsnails · 26/05/2021 14:32

I’d start talking to your neighbours- if a group of you start making a fuss it will help. Find out who your local councillor(s) are and talk to them about it - this is exactly the kind of thing they should be able to help you navigate.

Berthatydfil · 26/05/2021 14:51

If you know which house this all relates to then report to trading standards also HMRC

looptheloopinahulahoop · 27/05/2021 10:32

I've contacted the police about the lack of MOT and insurance, but apparently unless they catch them driving the cars

surely that's rubbish if they're parked on the public highway and by definition they've been driven onto it

That's just them being lazy. Do you have a local Facebook group? You could post there, a local councillor might see and get involved, or people can tell you which councillor to contact.
