My ears are chocful of wax! How do I get rid on the meantime. I can’t get an appointment for six weeks.

Do Hopi candles work? Or is that crap?

I've seen people on here getting ear irrigation kits a new then you just use warm water to flush out the wax. Have you been using ear drops to soften the wax?

dementedpixie · 18/05/2021 19:39

And no I wouldn't imagine hopi candles help at all

crazycrofter · 18/05/2021 19:45

Dh bought one of those ear irrigation kits on Amazon and it worked perfectly. He wanted me to look at all the wax on the tissues in the bin but I declined the offer Grin

He’d been using ear drops for a couple of weeks first.

Do not use otex for more than 5 days FYI you can caused rupture ear drums and they thin and bleach them. My partner had his ears cleaned out a few months back and was warned about this. Use olive oil

TyrionsNextWife · 18/05/2021 19:49

I got my ears vacuumed a few years ago, it was amazing! The best £60 I’ve ever spent Grin

O T E X - Rapid Ear drops for wax removal, available from most good chemists and large branches of Superdrug. Make sure you buy the Rapid version, and follow instructions on the pack.

Order a 150ml catheter syringe from Amazon/Ebay, sometimes sold as Hydrophonics Syringes.

Use the drops as directed on the packet.

After about 5 days, boil a kettle of clean water and leave to cool down to blood heat, same as for making formular feeds. Fill a large jug with this, and draw up a syringe full. Cover your shoulders and clothing with a large towel, and use a large tub such as a wash out ice cream tub to catch the water and removed wax as it runs out of your ear.

Get a friend to help you do the next stage if possible. You need to only invert the tip of the syringe into your ear lobe pointing the nozzle towards the back of your ear inside and upwards. Gentilly start syringing out using the warm water. DO NOT PUSH THE TIP OF THE SYRINGE DEEP INSIDE YOUR EAR, STOP If YOU FEEL ANY PAIN.

Use the Container to catch the spent water which should be rather discoloured from particles of wax as they exit. Keep going until the water runs clear, l usually takes a few syringe fulls depending on size, before the larger chunks of wax finally come out. Dry ear, rinse out equipment, and repeat on the opposite ear if required.

Give ears a couple of hours to fully dry out before your full normal hearing level should be restored.

I have to Do DHs ears for him ever few months, and find the drops above to be the best ones l have used, you can use Olive oil from the chemist, but l have never found it as good.

The Ear olive oil is not the same stuff as Cooking oil, it’s more refined!

My ears are not even that full I don't think but I really really want to syringe my ears just for the feeling of it Grin

Queenofbeebers · 18/05/2021 20:47

In a perverse way I’m incredibly excited by this:

Oooh I bought an ear irrigation kit from Amazon. I had a terrible blocked ear. One day it completely blocked and I couldn't hear a thing. I set to with the syringe and warm water. It was ACE. Loads of tiny bits of wax came out then...BOOM! A coffee bean sized popped out! The relief was epic! And yes, I took a photo to show DP Grin.

Queenofbeebers · 18/05/2021 21:03

My god look at this beauty and I can have it here by tomorrow.

I have that kit, it’s good. I get chunks of wax out.

Queenofbeebers · 18/05/2021 21:11

@CovidCorvid do you do the ear prep first with Olive oil?

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 18/05/2021 21:12

Ha ha, nope!

dottiedodah · 18/05/2021 21:23

I would urge caution TBH! I have had painful ear infections in the past .Do you have anywhere locally (An ear clinic) ? It costs about £50 but will be worth it.Just put some drops of olive oil in .One or two is fine ,morning and evening .I would be very concerned about DIY kits .

dottiedodah · 18/05/2021 21:24

You defo need to prep with olive oil, this softens the wax and makes it easier to get out .

MotherofPearl · 18/05/2021 21:31

Honestly OP, you'd fit right in at Sporners' Corner! They love this kind of stuff.

EggysMom · 18/05/2021 21:31

As an aside. My GP surgery (receptionist) always insisted I had a GP appointment first to determine that the issue was wax and not an infection; then a Nurse appointment to irrigate them would be arranged. I always knew it was wax because I suffer terribly, my ears generally need sorting every couple of years. However it's not something which can be triaged by phone so I wonder if they've changed their approach now?

dottiedodah · 18/05/2021 21:52

EggysMom Our Gp no longer does appointments for ear wax removal. The private Ear Clinic does a very good job but charges £50!
