My ears are chocful of wax! How do I get rid on the meantime. I can’t get an appointment for six weeks.

Do Hopi candles work? Or is that crap?

Yep our GP hasn't done any wax removal for years.

Typical NHS: free at point of use but not particularly useful.

medebourne · 18/05/2021 21:59

I don't think any NHS GPs or nurses do this anymore. You have to go to a private clinic. Also I don't think the clinics do irrigation. It's mainly suction removal, and that's because irrigation can be risky.

Ugzbugz · 18/05/2021 22:03

My surgery doesn't do syringing so paid for like a hoover at the chemist. Was 40 quid buy but couldn't have coped any longer!

I irrigate ears for patients but have a strict protocol to run through first to check for infection and any previous damage to ear drums due to the risks. I recommend olive oil for 2 weeks ( sometimes this is enough to clear things).

Ear irrigation is definitely old fashioned and a much safer procedure is microsuction ( still working on our trust to investigate this)

I really wouldn't recommend DIY

endofthelinefinally · 18/05/2021 22:10

There is a reason hcps don't do ear irrigation any more. Suction clearance is much safer. I used to loads of ear syringing decades ago, but I wouldn't do it now. It can cause damage.

I went deaf after using otex!

I ended up with a referral to my.local hospital as I couldn't hear out of my right ear..luckily my doctor gave me this ear spray and it sorted it out. The wax that came out was amazing I do have a bendy ear canalwhich is tiny I cant wear in ear headphones as they just don't fit.

My doctor reckons otex should be banned

Thelnebriati · 18/05/2021 23:26

I did DS's ears because he complained he was almost deaf, and it was horrifying. There were lumps the size of coffee beans Envy

🤢

TheTeenageYears · 19/05/2021 01:12

Use olive oil twice a day for a few days rather than Otex. When you said you can't get an appointment for 6 weeks is that at your local GP surgery or Boots/anywhere else that does hearing aids who will also deal with ear wax? If the former try the latter rather than DIY. Ears are incredibly sensitive and whilst not being able to hear properly is frustrating it's much better than a burst ear drum or ear infection which could be the result of tampering with your ears yourself.

Blossomtoes · 19/05/2021 01:32

Placemarking as my right ear is incredibly bunged up at the moment!

Pinkpaisley · 19/05/2021 04:52

If you want a look inside your ears you can get a digital otoscope that will connect to your phone via WiFi or Bluetooth pretty cheap these days.

I came on to say this. I love mine!

some opticians do ear clinics where they suction the ears and also check the ear.
give a couple a call.

TeachMakan · 19/05/2021 06:27

@Pinkpaisley and @whosappleman sounds great - do you have one you could recommend please?

Mindymomo · 19/05/2021 06:41

My DH went to a private gp clinic to have microsuction done on one ear, it cost £48. When he went back yesterday for the same procedure, they didn’t charge him as they put it down to a follow up.

bellabride · 19/05/2021 07:29

My local optician offers ear wax removal treatment.

lborgia · 19/05/2021 07:37

If you've ever had any ear surgery, including grommets, please don't attempt this at home without checking with a professional first.

Ooh I'm not sure. I'm certain it was Amazon but I just scrolled through my orders and it's not there Confused

I think they're all pretty similar. Mine wasn't expensive perhaps. £15.

Pinkpaisley · 19/05/2021 14:37

These things change name constantly. Basically you want to go on Amazon and find one with lots of reviews. Like whosappleman Mentioned it won’t be expensive. Mine has been working just fine for 3 years so I have definitely gotten my money’s worth out of it. It was really great when I had a persistent ear infection because I could check it myself and know when the GP was going to want to watch and wait and when he was going to want to do another round of meds. In the past When I’ve had ear infections, I’ve had to go in for frequent, really unnecessary checks (I’m prone to ear infections whenever I get on an airplane hence having them as an adult)

Queenofbeebers · 19/05/2021 21:17

Spec savers have come to my rescue. I cannot tell you how excited I am.

My foray into Amazon ear cleansing has been disappointing thus far. Just a few flakes. The £55 charge will be worth it. Am hoping there will be plunger like sound effects.
