Anyone found a cold medicine that actually does what it claims ?

Has anyone found any cold medicine that actually works?
I do wonder if in the past the price has put me off the ones that claim to make you feel like you don't have a cold etc
Ds has brought yet another cold back from nursery and I could really do with not being a hangy snotty mess at the moment as I've got a really important piece of work due in

Day and Night nurse.

Best ever for a cold.

MrsGulDukat · 18/05/2021 09:06

Probably not for a kid though.

fedup078 · 18/05/2021 09:08

Buy the stuff from behind the pharmacy counter. Like lemsip but not with the normal ingredients that are on the shelf in the shop. It works much better.

And honestly loads of vitamin c and zinc. I take both max dose about 4 times a day if I feel a cold coming on (zinc clinically shown to reduce the duration of a cold). I also start taking it the second anyone else in the house gets a cold. Dh and both dc got a cold about 3 weeks ago and they are still snotty and coughing (not COVID). I felt a little sniffly for the day and felt otherwise fine.

I find the cheap and cheerful Cold and Flu tablets from Tescos work best.

MrsGulDukat · 18/05/2021 09:10

Day and night nurse is what.you need then.

Grapesoda7 · 18/05/2021 09:11

If you're congested, contact tablets are very good. You have to ask for them at the pharmacy though. They don't have them on display for some reason.

Redwineandcrisps · 18/05/2021 09:11

I always get nurofen max strength - I don’t like to mess around with colds and go straight for the hard stuff!

shumway · 18/05/2021 09:12

The echinacea tablets that you put in water to make a drink.

Lnix · 18/05/2021 09:12

For a blocked nose I always use Vicks Sinex - allows me I breathe easily, couldn't be without it!

gamerchick · 18/05/2021 09:13

The all in one stuff that's green. Lemsip I think. Evil to take but does the job.

Day and night nurse but both knock me out.

AlmostSummer21 · 18/05/2021 09:15

Beechams - works for me.

SmileyClare · 18/05/2021 09:23

It probably goes without saying but if you combine two or more cold remedies check the active ingredients to ensure you aren't taking over the limit. E.g., Lemsip contains paracetamol, as do cold/flu tablets.

Get well soon Brew

When I get the first symptoms of a cold (when I feel a particular sensation at the back of my throat), I use a Boots own brand effervescent echinacea tablet. I still know I have a cold but it definitely lessens my symptoms so I hardly sneeze or have a runny nose. However, it doesn’t do the same thing for me if I’ve gone beyond that tickly throat.

I’ve tried other echinacea tablets and they’re not all the same.

BlueAgean · 18/05/2021 09:31

Prevention- First defence spray. Echinichea. Vit C and Zinc or Sambucol, Vit D.

When ill, eat vegetarian or soup, more fluid, NeilMed Sinus Rinse, lots of sleep, paracetomol and hot lemon and honey, or Sudafed.

Goodbyecustardtart · 18/05/2021 09:37

Day and Night nurse. Nothing else comes close.

jasjas1973 · 18/05/2021 09:42

Avoid getting a cold?
i use a nasal spray at the first sign of a cold and it works most of the time.
British Athletics use it, Vicks First Defence.

However, since CV, don't know anyone who has had a seasonal illness.

isettled · 18/05/2021 09:44

Boots own brand decongestant. I won't be without it

Mummyratbag · 18/05/2021 09:46

1000mg of vitamin C rarely fails

Branleuse · 18/05/2021 10:01

day nurse and night nurse are the only ones that work for me.

Branleuse · 18/05/2021 10:02

the active ingredient in day nurse is pseudoephedrine, which decongests really well. Can sometimes make your head feel a bit funny though if youre sensitive. Other cold remedies use phenelyepherine which is nowhere near as effective

GravityFalls · 18/05/2021 10:04

I always just take Cold and Flu tablets. Preferably ones that say MAX or something on them. Always seem to do the trick. In fact I take them instead of plain paracetamol for a headache or general bleurghness as they seem more effective. Make sure you take them regularly though (according to what it says on the box). That’s the trick.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 18/05/2021 10:07

Boots own brand cold and flu defence spray, I find it prevents most colds taking hold and if they do they’re definitely not so bad.

WithASpider · 18/05/2021 10:10

We use Asda max strength congestion relief, 12.2mg phenylephrine (much stronger than sudafed) alongside paracetamol as there's none in it. Works really well and is £1.25 for 12 tabs.

Echinacea too at the first tingle.

MissHoney85 · 18/05/2021 10:22

I find anything with decongestants actually prolongs a cold and makes it more likely to develop into sinusitis.

I do find that First Defense is effective if taken at the first sign of a cold.
