Obsessy mumsnetters- what's your current passing obsession?

I had a thread here a few months ago about passing obsessions and was surprised to find how many other mumsnetters have them (and it gave me some good ideas for future obsessions too Grin ).

After a period of Elliott Smith, I've now moved on to the Columbine Massacre, and am hellbent on reading as many in depth psychological profiles of the shooters as I can lay my hands on, to find out what went wrong and how/why it happened 😬 It was sparked off by listening to the compelling Confronting Columbine podcast.

Annoying too because my Elliott Smith phase ended when I was smack bang in the middle of William Todd Shultz's excellent biography, though I'm sure I'll come back to it at a later stage.

So, what's your current passing obsession?

I'm back in a Henry the 8th phase.

transformandriseup · 16/05/2021 11:44

Brilliant idea for a thread, I am not really obsessed with anything at the moment which makes a change but fairly recently it was Ancient Egypt. I can go from being obsessed with a subject to being completely un-interested overnight.

ExJasper · 16/05/2021 11:51

@Probablier have you read a Three Hours? It's fiction but about a school shooting and sparked my interest in the columbine shooting.

Knitting is my current obsession. Not doing it obviously, just watching endless YouTube videos about it!

And eating toblerone.

Jongleurterre · 16/05/2021 12:04

I spent a lot of time on the Watts family murders. We all know people kill their partners when relationships are under strain but by all accounts he was a loving father to his two beautiful daughters.

My personal conclusion after reading and watching as much stuff as I could find was that the girlfriend should not have got off lightly.

AlexCabot · 16/05/2021 12:05

Deaths on Everest and the appalling treatment of the Sherpas.

Probablier · 16/05/2021 12:07

Ooh I've not read Three Hours, will check it out thanks Grin Also looking for a decent book specifically about Columbine if anyone can recommend, am considering Sue Klebold's memoir too.

I can also go from obsessed to uninterested overnight, and then back to obsessed again in a heartbeat 🙈

Jongleure I've looked into Chris Watts a bit and am totally baffled, but actually haven't considered the girlfriend. Might need to look into that a bit more. I don't know how he even thought he would get away with it.

Three Hours is by Rosamund Lupton, I think I stayed up all night reading it.

Afterwards, I downloaded a book called Columbine by Dave Cullen but before I could read it I'd found something else to obsess on! So I don't know if it's any good to recommend to you!

InescapableDeath · 16/05/2021 12:14

Not now but last year I became utterly obsessed with the Station Nightclub fire - highly recommend not getting into it! I spent a few good months reading everything I could.

‘Luckily’ I’ve moved house this year so can spend hours looking up new bits of furniture and it all seeeeems relatively normal even if I spend a very long time doing it!

TheGoodEnoughWife · 16/05/2021 12:15

Hedgehogs. Feeding them, houses for them, camera to catch sight of them... and so far successful...although I 'need' more cameras to watch them inside the houses!

PictureNest · 16/05/2021 13:08

99 cal Birthday cake bars Blush No idea why I love them so much, not using them as a treat substitute, they are the treat I want! Bloody lovely little things.

DS (3), also adores them... so they just be genuinely nice? He would pick them over chocolate, and he loves chocolate

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 16/05/2021 13:40

Currently garden birds but was the Franklin expedition (after watching The Terror). My obsessions are very seasonal- I did deaths on Everest a couple of winters ago; the book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is vg about the 1996 tragedy.

LondonStone · 16/05/2021 14:08

Columbine by Dave Cullen is a brilliant book. One night, towards the end of the book, I read it for a few hours before bed and had horribly vivid nightmares about a shooting. That book really stayed with me.

My current passing obsession is a missing person case in the US. His name is Brandon Lawson and he made a really strange call to 911 right before he went missing. There’s podcasts and forums dedicated to trying to decipher the call and now I’m hooked.

Cam2020 · 16/05/2021 14:40

Nothing at the moment, but have spent many an hour falling down the Skylar Neese and Kristen Costas murder rabbit holes!

Skylar's murderers ild twitter account are all active and you can still read the tweets they posted after her murder, which I find both sickening and intruiging. There are several websites dedicated to Kirsten Costas that draw attention from real obssessives who went as far as unmasking her murders new identity. I undetstand having strong opinions, but some of the people commenting sound completely unhinged!

Jongleurterre · 16/05/2021 14:42

Personally I don’t recommend Sue Klebold’s book. I agree with what is written here

www.bookforum.com/print/2303/sue-klebold-s-troubling-memoir-about-raising-a-killer-16506

I started reading it but found some aspects were disrespectful to the victims.

I have sympathy for her and know that she was looking to find peace and wants to help others so that incidents like this can be stopped before they happen again, but her son was a mass murderer and the book was a step too far in my opinion.

Going round to schools and talking to parents, children and educators is a good thing though.

There is a video, if I can find it of one of a victim’s father and his dignity and grace when talking about the love doe his son is very moving. I will try and find it if you haven’t already seen it.

Gluestick80 · 16/05/2021 14:42

Columbine by Dave Cullen is a great book.

Jongleurterre · 16/05/2021 14:46

This isn’t the film I meant but here is Tom Mauser remembering his son Daniel. He has also written a book.

Walking in Daniel’s shoes.

Hippywannabe · 16/05/2021 14:46

Chris Watts is a deep rabbit hole! Just watching the new Discovery plus programme and am on all the Reddit boards for the murders.

GreenTreeLeaves · 16/05/2021 14:48

Are peoples passing obsessions about anything? I become obsessed with things then suddenly lose interest too, I worried for a while it was a mental health condition!

I've been obsessed with bikes (bought one) rattan, Googling health concerns, dogs (bought one), ikea, food, even people Blush

StevieNix · 16/05/2021 14:49

My current obsession despite only have one child myself is watching videos by American large family youtubers (bonus points if they homeschool, have a homestead and do large batch family cooking videos!) lol im obsessed with watching jaymerill Stewart’s videos at the moment

Jongleurterre · 16/05/2021 14:57

This is another video you may want to watch. It is very moving and thought provoking as shows how a father knew his son was dead and shows the body from a distance just as his father saw it.

bigfloweryblouse · 16/05/2021 14:58

YouTube videos of Wild Mustang horses in the US.

User1357 · 16/05/2021 14:58

Spent so long obsessing over the Chris watts murders.

I have just come out of a royal and Tudor times obsession.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2021 15:04

I have spent more time than is healthy watching Instagram accounts of

a) Someone who took up jump rope in the first lockdown and is now amazing at it.

b)Someone who cleans swimming pools for a job.
