DD (13) is taller than me and hates it - what should I do?

DD is 13 and about 5’7”. I am 5’5” and she hates being taller than me. She is happy being tall in general, and knows that it is generally considered a good thing, but it constantly bothers her that I am shorter than her. This is only going to get worse!

I don’t want her to feel sad, and we are both hoping that wise mumsnetters will have some advice that will help her see things differently 😀

It's normal for the next generation to be taller than their parents. Often sons end up taller than dads and daughters taller than mums. Its how we are, over all, much taller now than in the Victorian era etc.

I dont think Id allow her to make it to be such a big thing. I dont mean invalidate her feelings, but provide an explanation, reassure her that she will never outgrow your love, and then move on...

Is she taller than her friends too? I think she must just want to be mothered a bit, a few years down the line and she’ll be fine. I’m 6ft, being tall is great, and my kids are desperate to be tall too. Maybe your dd needs to find a taller positive role model?

This is what I was wondering. I was my full adult height at 13 and taller than my mother. It brings home that you are not someone's baby anymore and that adulthood is around the corner. That can be a bit daunting for some.

She may not grow much more. I'm 5 ft 7 and I think its the perfect height, tall but not too tall.

I was waaaaaay taller than my mum by age 10 - i know what your daughter means, about it is ‘wrong’ but I think it is more normalised to see tall women now, But I felt that my mum didn’t really relate to s9me of the self-consciousness I felt about being tall (was also waaay taller that’s my friends which didn’t help)

My own DD is 11 and 5’9 and just wants to hurry up and be taller than me (I don’t care as long as her feet stop growing!!)

TwigTheWonderKid · 15/05/2021 17:25

This is me towering over my 4' 11'' mum. At least your daughter doesn't also have to deal with awful 80s "fashion" and a dodgy perm.

Dd is 14 and 5ft 10. She loves being taller than me. At 5ft 6.5 I am an absolute shortarse. Dh is 6ft 6.
Dd still comes for cuddles though, big as she is!
