A bit of excitement, police with machine guns have just sealed off our street!

We're just over visiting our DD. She lives in a street full of terraced houses and three police SUVs have pulled up and blocked the street.

Then five policemen got out and suited up. They have the lot on - helmets, machine guns etc and are standing outside a house about 50 yards down the street.

No idea what is happening but this is really just an ordinary street - not used to seeing machine guns round this way!

This reminds me of an incident when I was a kid.

The couple across the road had a rather volatile relationship. Both were equally violent and their rows could wake the street.
One sleepy Sunday afternoon screaming drew me to the window. There was the man chasing his wife up the street with a sawn off shotgun, she stopped across the road from our house and they were screaming at each other. I was fascinated with The A Team and such like at the time so this to me was epic.

Mother flew in the lounge, scooped me up and deposited me behind the sofa, refusing to let me watch any of it. Instead she took my place in the window and I had to listen to her relaying the commentary to my very disinterested dad.
It all fizzled out very undramatically. Police arrived and carted him off. I was allowed back in time to see the wife screeching abuse at the back of the van as he left. By the Wednesday they were deeply in love again Grin

Unashamedly place marking

CounsellorTroi · 15/05/2021 11:43

Saw a couple of mounted police trotting down our road once. No idea why they were there.

Years ago this happened next door to my friend's mum. A sleepy street in a sleepy village. Her neighbour had a gun arsenal is his back bedroom that included ... a rocket launcher and grenades. His mum said that he was a good neighbour and very quiet ...
It's always the quiet ones!
StressedandNameChanged · 15/05/2021 11:45

The last time we had an armed police raid in my area, it was in response to a man who had been reported threatening teenagers with a knife.
It was quite a big operation, police vans and cars blocking off all nearby streets. They went into a house, arrested the man then brought him out. He has since been charged and released on bail.

midnightstar66 · 15/05/2021 11:49

A mumsnetter has called the covid police to inform them there is mixing in a household. She got the door number wrong though!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/05/2021 11:50

Last time I saw out PSCO he was having a cup of coffee. I feel cheated now.

midnightstar66 · 15/05/2021 11:55

The last time I witnessed such a raid complete with helicopter, dogs, armed response, riot vans as well as multiple polite cars and ambulances as far as the eye could see, it was for a bloke suspected of recently robbing a casino (not an armed robbery - place was closed) and he wasn't in. It was all a bit of an anti climax!

lydia2021 · 15/05/2021 11:58

I woke up one morning many years ago to find masses of police outside. They were raiding a house opp where the men inside, several men, with women and babies were arrested. Police caught up with the men who bombed a Bologna train a couple of years previously

Machine guns are fully automatic, so they can reel of hundreds of bullets without pausing or the trigger having to be pulled for each bullet. They are mostly mounted to vehicles to carry the ammunition or take two people to operate, one to hold the gun and one to carry and feed the belts of ammunition.

Semi automatic guns are the next level down and can fire bursts of bullets with one trigger pull. Most police forces and many armed forces carry these guns as they are more portable because you dont need a box of ammunition for each time you fire. They have large capacity magazines and the operator carries multiple refills in their pockets or strapped to a vest thingy

Then there are ordinary guns which require a trigger pull for each bullet fired but can have a magazine with multiple bullets

Then there are bolt action guns (mostly rifles) which require each bullet to be loaded and fired individually

I hope I got that mostly correct!

Redcrayons · 15/05/2021 12:05

We had a police raid just down the road. Don’t think they were armed but there were loads of them.

I just so happened (ahem) to be walking past to see them bringing out a screaming toddler.

It was drugs raid.

FB local group is a mine of information for these situations. Get on there and see what’s going on.

EasterEggBelly · 15/05/2021 12:06

Probably someone breaching lockdown rules...

nickymanchester · 15/05/2021 12:07

OK, so it all seems to be over now.

They have just brought out a man and taken him away in a police van.

One of the armed police with not a machine gun seems to be standing guard outside and two women officers have gone into the house.

I may be reading too much into this but, with DD's neighbour having said it was a hostage situation, a man has been taken away and now two female police officers have gone into the house I seriously do wonder if it was a domestic violence situation that turned really nasty?

A couple of the armed officers have put their rifles (or whatever they are) away, taken off their helmets and seem to be getting ready to leave so I guess it's over now.

If anything else does happen I'll let you know but it pretty much looks as though that's it.

They won't be machine guns 😂

1990s · 15/05/2021 12:11

Honestly when I watched Line of Duty I was thinking, they never do this in really life... fascinated to hear they do!

mumwon · 15/05/2021 12:25

(For American readers please excuse the generalization!) Now if we were in some parts/communities of/in the USA op you would probably be able to tell us exactly what type of fire arm it was!
Thank goodness for the reason we are ignorant about guns

NoMLMbots · 15/05/2021 12:25

Machine guns! I wasn't aware that police carried those in the UK - a couple of semi automatic types but not machine guns....

So what's the word - terrorist - drugs raid - armed weapons or personnel on the premises?

NoMLMbots · 15/05/2021 12:26

It actually really lovely that there aren't lots of guns in the UK
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 15/05/2021 12:31

Well I'm guessing no one has been hurt if there aren't any ambulances around. That's good.

TheQueef · 15/05/2021 12:33

Is a semi not a machine gun then?
I know FA about guns so apologies if it's obvious.

TinyDicksAndGlitter · 15/05/2021 12:35

Bet it's all those glitter bombs that mumsnetters sent out last week 🤣.

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 15/05/2021 12:51

Ex -copper DH says they will likely have been a Heckler & Koch MP5s which are capable of being fully automatic so are classed as sub-machine guns. (Well, that's what armed response use in our area anyway).

(Reaching significant levels of pedantry I know but I so rarely have any shareable knowledge! Smile )

TheQueef · 15/05/2021 12:54

Thank you Dinosaur
I didn't even watch LoD Blush

This happened on my street about 18m ago. A young guy failed to turn up for a court appearance, bailiffs were sent round to find him, he climbed onto the roof with a shotgun refusing to go anywhere. He came down after 16 hours or so, he was freezing and hungry. Terrified his girlfriend and small child, they thought he was going to be shot dead. All over a fairly minor offence (IIRC it was non payment of a fine for being drunk & disorderly, hardly worth years in prison for!) Idiot.
