Which city would you recommend of the three for a short break? I haven't visited any of these and they're on my list of UK places to visit.

OP posts:

Birmingham: stay in Bournville or a nice part of city centre.

You could have a lovely weekend in brum.

RampantIvy · 12/05/2021 21:02

Newcastle is a fabulous city. It is easy to get to the coast from there as well.

My preference would be Liverpool because I have never been there, and I have heard so many good things about it.

MeadowHay · 12/05/2021 21:05

To be fair I've not really been to Birmingham or Newcastle before but Liverpool is great!! Great nightlife, affordable, absolutely loads of museums and art galleries and statues etc to visit. Beaches nearby, Southport pleasure beach fairground nearby, loads of great places to eat and shop...perfect place for a city break. Oh and not to mention a really friendly diverse population Smile

Horsemad · 12/05/2021 21:08

Newcastle reminds me of Liverpool, so either of those. 🙂

MozzchopsThirty · 12/05/2021 21:08

Newcastle is fabulous, easy to get around on metro, good museums, architecture, great bars and restaurants, people are lovely

BiscoffAddict · 12/05/2021 21:10

Out of those Liverpool. Birmingham is a bit of a dump IMO.

Zarene · 12/05/2021 21:12

Newcastle or Liverpool! Both really interesting and fun.

Birmingham isn't nice, and also isn't walkable which would be important to me on a short break.

DenisetheMenace · 12/05/2021 21:12

Newcastle is fantastic: lots of natural beauty on the doorstep took yiu want to recuperate on Sunday morning 😁

Sorry Liverpudlians but much of Liverpool just isn’t very nice.

WithASpider · 12/05/2021 21:13

Birmingham is in the middle of a massive City Centre regeneration so an absolute nightmare to get round at the moment. Once that's done it will definitely be worth a visit.

Newcastle is nice to visit, beaches at Whitley Bay and Cullercoats are fabulous if a bit cold!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/05/2021 21:15

Absolutely love Newcastle.

Discovered it when DS went to Uni there and have fallen in love with it!!
So much to see and do, great restaurants, the Quayside and lovely walks and beaches nearby.

Highly recommend

TheDoctorDances · 12/05/2021 21:24

Are you going by car or public transport? Both have a beach if you’re prepared to drive for a short while.

Both have an amazing nightlife during normal times.

Do you like history? Liverpool is great for 20th century culture, Newcastle is good for architecture as it has Roman ruins.

murbblurb · 12/05/2021 21:48

Newcastle is fabulous - get the train in, the only way to cross the Tyne! Loads to see and do, history, views, etc etc. I'd live there if it was just a bit further south.

Liverpool has a clutch of museums and a nice Riverside. I've no idea what you go to Birmingham for, sorry...

keiratwiceknightly · 12/05/2021 21:52

Brum is great normally. Fabulous shopping, National quality museums and art galleries, three good theatres, great food of all sorts from Michelin starred places to bring your own booze balti huts; great nightlife... and it's very green - lots of parks and canals. But it is a mess atm. Once the city centre rebuild is finished it will be a fab city break.

allycat4 · 12/05/2021 22:04

Liverpool

iamme21 · 12/05/2021 22:08

I live in Liverpool and love it 😍. But I’ve been to both Newcastle and Birmingham, would go back to Newcastle in heartbeat, would be happy to never go back to Brum, sorry!

FloconDeNeige · 12/05/2021 22:25

Birmingham is fantastic. More canals than Venice, shopping second only to London, very diverse.

I found Liverpool very ‘meh’ and wouldn’t bother going back, although parts of the dock area are quite nice.

Newcastle is a nice compact little city but every time I’ve been, the wind has been freezing!

Dippydinosaurus · 12/05/2021 22:26

Liverpool is amazing. So much nightlife and Liverpool one for shopping. The fashion is much better than anywhere else I've shopped. People are friendly. Newcastle is good too. I don't like Birmingham - don't feel safe there, shopping is ok but not brilliant. Nightlife is ok but not great

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/05/2021 22:28

Not Birmingham.

Liverpool and Newcastle are both fabulous.

Do both.

FloconDeNeige · 12/05/2021 22:31

Also, OP, be aware that it’s the done thing to slate Birmingham, even if you’ve never even visited the place.

Retrievemysanity · 12/05/2021 22:32

Any DC? Brum is great for DC with Cadbury world and Thinktank museum. Bullring and mailbox for shopping, nice restaurants etc.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/05/2021 22:32

I’ve been.

FloconDeNeige · 12/05/2021 22:36

I will say that 30 years ago Birmingham would not have been a city break destination at all, but it has changed beyond all recognition in that time and is now genuinely worth visiting.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/05/2021 22:38

Liverpool is fabulous. I wish I lived there. Can't stand Birmingham and have never been to Newcastle.

BriocheBuns · 12/05/2021 23:16

I’d say Newcastle but that’s because it’s the only one I’ve been to out of the 3. Been several times and loved it each time. Such nice views and it’s very friendly and likeable. City centre is decent and everything close by x

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 12/05/2021 23:20

Liverpool. Great restaurants & cafes.
