Which city would you recommend of the three for a short break? I haven't visited any of these and they're on my list of UK places to visit.

Though I like Birmingham too, especially the canal district. Some fab buildings. Baltis!

Avoid Birmingham.

Definitely Liverpool or Newcastle! Not a fan of Birmingham at all

Greenmarmalade · 13/05/2021 01:11

Ok... what has Birmingham done to some of you? Confused

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2021 05:11

There's plenty in Birmingham for a city break, including lots of interesting and beautiful architecture, but if it's in the middle of a regeneration it sounds like it's better to wait and go later.

Agree that people are being unfair to Birmingham, which seems to suffer along with Hull as being written off by people who are unaware that both are actually nice cities with plenty of interest for a short break.

Been to all 3. Liverpool is my favourite.

Undeuxdrei · 13/05/2021 06:50

Liverpool. Never been to the other 2.
So many museums, the waterfront at the docks, shopping both mainstream and quirky, architecture, formby sands on the coast with the red squirrels, great night life, lovely green spaces, so many pubs and restaurants (there were when I lived there anyway) and really friendly people. There’s a buzz about the place. Agree that driving into the centre from the motorway can be a bit depressing - last time I was there a lot of the empty terraces were waiting to be regenerated.

I have lived in Birmingham for 40 years and wouldn't live anywhere else, yet I still wouldn't recommend that someone chooses it as a destination for a break. And yes it supposedly does have more canals than Venice but quantity does not equal quality. It has everything you would expect a big city to have but nothing special.

I would go to Birmingham. I just heard that the biggest primark in the world opened there this week😂

BiscoffAddict · 13/05/2021 07:48

Liverpool and Newcastle and actually very similar. The people are very friendly in both, but Liverpool has a bit more about. Lots of museums, bars, restaurants, great shopping. If you like The Beatles or football it’s also got that as well.

Embroideredstars · 13/05/2021 09:21

Depends what you like to do tbh.

I've been to all 3 but my opinion would vary depending on your interests...

Any of them would be great for a few days’ break. Liverpool and Newcastle have great riverside areas but Birmingham have their equivalent in its canal areas. Great cultural institutions in all, good restaurants, bars etc. How anyone couldn’t fill 2 or 3 happy days in each of them, I don’t know.

It’s just fascinating to me to see how England’s great cities are reinventing themselves for the mid-21st century, and how they each retain their own characters.
