How much does your gym cost?

Oh my god I had no idea how expensive the gym is! I’ve just looked into signing up but at £50 a month I’m not going to be able to afford it.

Absolutely gutted. I’m really unfit and unhealthy and am trying to lose weight. I’m doing C25k (thank goodness running is free!). I tried some weights and yoga classes on YouTube but I really don’t know what I’m doing and feel like I’d do so much better if I could have a bit of guidance or access to actual equipment.

Is £50/month a normal price? How much is your gym membership?

Pre-covid I paid £17/month for a budget gym with machines and classes. Now I pay £75/months for a posh place with a swimming pool (mostly for the swimming pool). Both in NW England.

Shop around

PurpleDaisies · 12/05/2021 20:47

I used to pay £35 a month for a place with a pool. It depends what your local area is like.

PurpleDaisies · 12/05/2021 20:47

I do a lot of classes pay as you go at my local leisure centre now (when covid allows!).

This one has a 25m pool.

The pay as you go sessions are £9.80 (which still feels really expensive? If I went once a week at £9.80 I’d be paying the equivalent of membership anyway!)

That’s double what I pay. Is it a posh place?
How long is the contract fir?

inmyslippers · 12/05/2021 21:00

Pure gym £15 no pool though

Seasidemumma77 · 12/05/2021 21:02

£30 a month

UserAtRandom · 12/05/2021 21:05

£19.95 a month. Fairly small gym and a couple of classes every evening and on Saturday mornings. No pool.

Does the gym have a nicer "ambience" - you seem to have to pay for that? I agree that PAYG prices are expensive in gyms - they definitely want you to pay for membership.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/05/2021 21:07

£35 per month for leisure centre which includes pool, gym, all classes (spin, Pilates, aerobics, yoga etc ), squash, badminton, table tennis and tennis. I think it’s good value. As I have a full membership I pay £10 extra per month to include 15 year old dd.

MangoBiscuit · 12/05/2021 21:11

I've done a few. The ones with pools, saunas etc are always more expensive. Proper strength gyms aren't too far behind (proper comp level equipment isn't cheap, so understandable).

Currently £15.99 pcm. Crappy free weights, cheap kettlebells, fields of cardio machines, no pool. But it is open 24/7, which suits me more.

DroopyDaff · 12/05/2021 21:14

£50 a month here too. Just increased from £48 which it has been for years so not complaining. For that we get a very big spacious 3 floor gym, all fitness classes (lots of choice), posher members only changing rooms, use of the pool or spa with sauna and steam room and reduced price racket sports. I think it’s great value. Less than a night on the town and much more beneficial!

We’re in the South East.

dementedpixie · 12/05/2021 21:15

£34.99 - Council run sports Centre. Can use any Centre in the area; some with pools and some without

LilithTheKitty · 12/05/2021 21:20

£20 per month, but it's a bodybuilders gym with no classes. There is the option to pay for personal trainer sessions on top of the membership.

UnkindlyMay · 12/05/2021 21:21

£72. But it’s within walking distance, rather than an hour’s bus trip or half hour drive-plus-parking-fee which means I use it several days a week.

It’s a luxury I couldn’t afford previously.

qualitygirl · 12/05/2021 21:22

35 for the year- it's our subsidised work gym and has no pool but it has free evening classes and its open 7-9

Newchances · 12/05/2021 21:22

22.50,council gym,any class,gym or choice of 3 pools

MonkeyPuddle · 12/05/2021 21:22

£25 council run, gym, pool, all classes.

UpTheJunktion · 12/05/2021 21:22

£35 pcm - includes gym, classes and use of the Lido.
London.

Snally82 · 12/05/2021 21:33

£55 for a reasonably high end gym inc. pool, jacuzzi etc. Online and in person classes.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 21:34

That’s double what I pay. Is it a posh place?
No! It’s really small and there’s no fancy cafe or saunas or members only areas. That’s partly why I was so surprised at the price!

The membership includes different locations across the area and they all have something different (one has squash courts for example, this one has a small pool). But none of the other locations are of any use to me. I don’t want to play squash, I want to swim and work out.

Should be £32 for council run sports centre (Better Leisure) has gym, pool, sauna, spinning classes and other body fit, hiit, Pilates classes etc.

But I only pay £27 because they do a corporate rate - if you're near a Better Leisure you can check on their website whether your employer gets a corporate rate, all I had to provide was a payslip to prove where I worked.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 21:44

Everyone who’s mentioned subsided rates made me check in case I was missing something. The absolute rock bottom cheapest price they do is a concession membership (eg for those receiving disability allowance/PIP) and it’s still a whopping £40.99 a month!

But I was wrong about the sauna, apparently there is one. I think they must think they’re a swanky place after all (even though they definitely aren’t.) They have delusions of grandeur.

Approx £125 per month for a gym in London. I used to go every day so was good value. I don't go as much now and probably should cancel but I really enjoy the times that I do go.

EBearhug · 12/05/2021 21:47

I okay £25.99 a month for swimming membership only. It's £5.40 for a swim and £7.80 for aquafit without it, so it's definitely cheaper for me. I would probably pay nearer £50 if I wanted to use the dry-side facilities as well (not sure of current prices for that.)

I also pay what is about to go up to £8 for a 90 minute yoga class each week, but if I don't go, I don't pay, and I really like the teacher (which us important in yoga - there are loads of different styles and teachers.) But that's an entirely separate place.

I did pay £50 a month when I couldn't really afford it, for a gym with a heated outdoor pool. I made sure I got my money's worth!

I think £50 a month is probably fairly average, but you need to look at what's included - I could go for a cheaper membership if I didn't want to go at peak times, but I work full-time, so I do. Anyway, numbers are limited currently because of pandemic restrictions, which means even at peak times, the pool isn't too busy. But there's no point paying less if you can't use those times, nor for extra facilities if you can't use them.

LongIslandIcedT · 12/05/2021 21:51

I used to pay £35pm for the council run sports centre which was less than 10yrs old and had a great gym, lots of classes and big pool.
I might rejoin at some point but I've just signed up for Les Mills on demand which I'm enjoying so far.
