How much does your gym cost?

Oh my god I had no idea how expensive the gym is! I’ve just looked into signing up but at £50 a month I’m not going to be able to afford it.

Absolutely gutted. I’m really unfit and unhealthy and am trying to lose weight. I’m doing C25k (thank goodness running is free!). I tried some weights and yoga classes on YouTube but I really don’t know what I’m doing and feel like I’d do so much better if I could have a bit of guidance or access to actual equipment.

Is £50/month a normal price? How much is your gym membership?

I pay £42pm for my gym. It has a few different pools and ladies only section to the gym. Not the poshest but the facilities are decent.

Cornishmumofone · 12/05/2021 21:57

I pay £22pcm. My gym has a pool. I also get access to several other gyms, an athletics track, water sports centre, another swimming pool and a dry ski slope.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 21:58

I think £50 a month is probably fairly average
Based on the answers so far it isn’t.

you need to look at what's included
I’ll have a deeper look. It’s a shame they don’t have various memberships for various activities eg a centre membership or a swimming membership. I feel like I’m paying for the huge amount of things that I won’t use and that are at centres really far away from me. Maybe I can get really into every single activity offered so that I feel I’m getting my money’s worth. 🤣

£65 pm for a rolling contract at my local or studio for classes only. If I paid for the classes individually it would pushing £200 so I'm happy with it.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 22:00

See @Cornishmumofone yours seems to be a similar set up is access to other centres (even a bloody dry ski slope which beats squash courts hands down!!) but at a much better price.

£50 a month here for Bannantynes.

Mumblechum0 · 12/05/2021 22:00

£59 a month, pre Covid was doing 3 classes a week. Pool, jacuzzi, sauna etc which I never use as well as gym which I never use either. Bit cheaper for off peak

Egghead68 · 12/05/2021 22:02

£48 a month for a subsidised place at a no frills charity run gym.

nellly · 12/05/2021 22:02

£49 a month for Virgin, Includes classes and a spa area and pool etc. We have cheaper nearby but it's my one luxury Grin

nellly · 12/05/2021 22:03

@Egghead68 that's crazy, are you in London?!

Lyricallie · 12/05/2021 22:06

£27 a month for the council gym with a swimming pool and that includes all my classes (when they're on) and that's a family pass so fiance and I. That's with a 10% work discount. I mainly use this one for cardio machines.

I've recently also joined more of a weightlifting gym with better weight equipment and Olympic weightlifting style classes and that's £33 pm. That one is just for me though. It's a nice local business type one so I'm happy to pay it.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 22:06

@voxnihili I bet that is one fancy gym!

megletthesecond · 12/05/2021 22:15

£32 a month for a local authority sports centre. It's very good value. Pool, gym and classes.

rachelgreensroom · 12/05/2021 22:17

£25 a month for gym, classes and pool. It's a council-run gym and I know there are much fancier gyms nearby for upwards of £50 even £75 a month.

PinkMice · 12/05/2021 22:23

Oh I’m really bitter about being poor today. It feels unfair that something that could literally improve your health is only accessible to some. I was willing to make sacrifices to do this (I have some medical conditions that would be easier to cope with if I was healthier/fitter) but it didn’t cross my mind that I wouldn’t be able to afford it at all.

Thanks for all your answers though. It’s good to know that I’m not wrong and that this particular gym is a bit on the pricey side. Such a shame it has monopoly on the local area.

I’ll pick myself up and try again with the YouTube videos if I can’t find anywhere more affordable.

30 quid for monday to friday morning membership. I'm going to do gym plus spin so that works.

41 for full membership.

Its a community gym.

The gym has these awesome machines that remember you and automatically adjust, and there and tonnes of classes, and staff are lovely.

Tickledtrout · 12/05/2021 22:27

£260 a year. With pool, classes, gym, badminton. A trust that runs the council ones. They also offer s discount if you work for a larger local employer or can find 10 colleagues to sign up with you. Definitely shop around

Hop27 · 12/05/2021 22:29

Minimum of $75 per week, but worth every penny. You only get one body, invest in it !

Flamingosarentreal · 12/05/2021 23:52

ds is about to sign up for £23 per month which is 24 hours but no pool.
If i was wiling to commit to 3 years mine would be about the same but has a pool and sauna

lolacola77 · 12/05/2021 23:55

£65 a month but it's essential for my mental health. I was paying £35 for the grotty council one so upgraded to a much nicer place with a gorgeous clean pool, lots of classes and no creepy old scruffy men!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 13/05/2021 00:04

Could you ask your GP if there is any scheme which would subsidise a gym membership? You're right, it shouldn't have to cost you so much. I use a newly refurbished council run leisure centre which has an indoor pool and a lido which I love for £30 a month

Miasicarisatia · 13/05/2021 00:09

£42ish, but that gives me access to swimming pool and several different gyms

Egghead68 · 13/05/2021 07:35
@Egghead68 that's crazy, are you in London?!
Yes. It’s shabby and there is no pool.

I’m not returning to it as zoom classes are cheaper and cleaner.

Hortuslover · 13/05/2021 07:40

I pay £45 but that’s at a reduced rate as they did an offer last year for NHS staff, it’s usually £75-80 but with that I get anytime access, classes, spacious gym and swimming. Also get half price entry to the attached spa, 10% off in restaurant and treatments. Also get 6 vouchers every quarter to take someone with me free of charge. So overall a very good deal and I couldn’t afford it if I paid full price. This is NW.

blobby10 · 13/05/2021 09:10

£25 a month which includes all classes (if you can get into them which is a whole other story!) It has toilets and showers but no fancy stuff like pools or jacuzzis. Its a 24/7 gym staffed from 0800-2200 but I go early mornings (5am). Its perfect for me as I prefer to train on my own (although I do chat to the other early morning people) and know what I'm doing.
