Last night, around 10.30pm, I made an offer on a dress, and they accepted. I didn't see their response immediately as I was watching TV and then went to bed, I saw it this morning.

In the meantime, from 5.20am, the seller was sending me strangely gushy messages telling me that they knew how amazing I'd look in it but they needed payment before they could send the item, then that they couldn't afford time wasters as it costs them so much time and money, and then the last one saying that they know how much I will love the item, but they cannot hang on for much longer for payment due to the huge amount of other offers they have to consider and if I didn't pay ASAP they would me to Ebay. The last email came at 8.20am, and they are in the UK.

Anyway, I've just paid (it was £24 inc postage, so not huge but not minuscule) so they can, er, put it in the second class post tomorrow as they said they would.

I also once bought some dinosaurs for DS when he was little and the seller then decided that PayPal was 'ruining his life' due to the fee's, 'stealing my money' were the words used. Without asking, he then refunded my money and wanted me to bank transfer (not knowing much about potential dangers with swapping bank details with a stranger I was hesitant) and sent me 32 emails in 24 hours that became more and more hysterical (he was going to lose his home, his job, he was going to take me to court etc.)

I sent him the dinosaurs back shortly after. I hope his next buyer got off lightly...

Please tell me yours!

They make my Lego woman sound quite sane Shock

I sold a vintage Lego set on eBay, it was rare and sold for over £120. I sent it off and the buyer then messaged me to say there were some bits missing. I apologised and said that I had double checked all the pieces were there.

Oh no, these weren't pieces connected to the set. These were the spare odd ones that you always seemed to get when you bought Lego. Perplexed, I offered to send her the "missing" pieces (basic Lego pieces, nothing rare) which she huffily declined as they "wouldn't be the correct vintage"

She then proceeded to leave gushing feedback about what a great eBayer I was Hmm

Bizarre but I honestly think with the new ‘managed payments system’ we’ll have more of these weird situations. In the past ebay has been a real
life saver for so many people (women, mothers in particular) who need cash urgently. So people who may be trying to balance the accounts and sell something on Friday to cover a direct debit that may go out on Monday. In the past when you as a buyer paid, the seller received the funds pretty much instantly through PayPal. Now it can take 4/5 days before they receive a penny. If you pay on a Saturday night, the seller will probably be paid on Monday morning. But if you pay on Sunday morning it will be delayed until midweek.
So yes, you experienced a mad mad seller. But I expect many more of these as everyone is forced to accept managed payments as their way of receiving money on eBay. It’s post pandemic desperation combined with eBay having market monopoly while shafting sellers left right and centre. Sadly .

I had one years ago, they said their item was lost in the post, I sent a replacement which they signed for, then bloody eBay refunded them anyway AND they left a review a couple of weeks later saying I'd stolen their money.

@36degrees I have had LOADS of these over the years. Enough to assume some do it professionally. They just know eBay always sides with the buyer.

I bought a t shirt on eBay many years ago. Nothing particularly special, though I think it probably went for less than the seller was hoping. They assured me on several occasions they'd posted the item, had proof they'd done it with tracking but wouldn't give me the tracking details, claimed it had been signed for etc. Ended up opening a case with eBay and the seller finally admitted they hadn't posted it at all. Agreed to close the case so long as it was sent to me in the time frame but only when I received it not before.

Numerous emails assuring me it had been sent and they claimed they had proof again that I'd signed for it. Never arrived and they again couldn't provide proof so eBay sided with me and gave me my money back.

T shirt arrived a week later, post stamped the day after eBay had refunded me on non signed for normal second class. eBay we're not remotely interested as it was outside of their system at that point, I said I wasn't paying to send it back to them as it was their error but would if they would pay. Got weeks of crappy emails about how I'd scammed them, eBay did take action in the end and banned them from selling for for a while.

Was one of my last flings with ebay, I only ever use it for very odd items I can't find elsewhere now. Too much hassle to buy and sell from.

This brings back memories!

I once sold a set of 8 vintage Nintendo games. Buyer paid immediately and left awesome feedback before I'd even sent them.

After mailing them, I was tidying up and oh shit- realized I'd left 1 of the 8 games out! Messaged the buyer to apologise and say I'll send the other game asap with free post.

He must've been confused, because he replied "Sorry about that!" and sent ME the cost of that one game. Cue flurry of emails with me trying to explain/apologise. Almost every time, he sent me another X-amount until he'd almost paid me back for the whole order!

I gave up messaging, sent his extra money back via Paypal and luckily never heard from him again.

So strange!

I listed a crappy old pine chest of drawers for £25; the listing made it abundantly clear that it was not well made and only good for a shed or garage. The bloke who bought it then messaged me saying that having now actually read the listing (yes really) he didn’t want it any more so could he have his money back.

I said the onus was on him to read the listing before making a bid and when would he be coming to pick it up. He got increasingly unpleasant and came out with all sorts of clearly bollocks excuses including dyslexia. I am only slightly ashamed to admit that I was enjoying winding him up. It then it transpired that he had an antiques business and had intended to sell the chest on at a profit. I did eventually cancel the sale but he was such a prick.

There was also a woman who bought a bed frame from me. She harassed me about pickup dates, insisted on cash on collection and then failed to turn up. When I rang her husband answered and said they were on their way to hospital because their kid was really poorly but I could hear them all laughing in the background. I then checked their reviews to find they had any number of negative reviews including accusations of fraud and dishonesty. Dodged a bullet there.

Redrum2222 · 09/05/2021 10:29

I got some original old vintage 1920's Knitting Patterns off my gran to sell (to help out with my driving lessons) I listed them all in the Knitting pattern section, put a photo of the actual pattern. Stated what type of wool needed, what size Knitting needles needed to knit the item, what size it would be when knitted up and also Knitting Pattern in the title. Put each one on at 2.99 buy it now with free P&P ( also put in listing it would be sent out in a cardboard envelope to save it bending) lo and behold a woman bought one.I sent her a message thanking her for payment and her pattern would be with her shortly and when it was delivered she emailed me fuming as she thought it was the actual knitted up dress 🙄 she also left negative feedback!

JemimaPyjamas · 09/05/2021 10:29

The general public are often quite something aren't they!
Years ago, DH bought a chest on Ebay which he had to collect from Edinburgh, which is 4 hours from us. The seller wanted cash on delivery rather than via PayPal, and seemed perfectly nice and reasonable.
DH hired the van and set off. An hour later, he got a message saying that they didn't want to let him have it now as it was at least £500 less than he was wanting.
Grrr!

Bought some shoes I really wanted, seller didn’t send them. Why go to the bother of putting up a well-worded advert?

I bought some trainers which the seller had listed as my size, turns out that was the American size, so too small (U.K. ebay). He said it wasn’t his fault, they were American trainers-Adidas?! Then there was a hole in one, he hadn’t mentioned that and said ‘I can’t be bothered to advertise them again, you can take it up with Paypal’ which of course I did and won back the money. I think he though PayPal the company would pay, as opposed to taking it from his account. Quite mad.

Spiceyornicey · 09/05/2021 10:40

I had a guy who bought three books in separate listings . Rare editions, each one a numbered part of a collection. After paying, he emailed to say he’d made a mistake, he already had those ones, they’d be duplicates to his precious collection. Sensing escalating drama that I couldn’t be bothered with, I mailed back to say , fair enough, Don’t worry, here’s a full refund, no problem.
He sent me three negative feedbacks!!!!! One for each book which he’d mistakenly bought and been immediately refunded for.
Negative- "it wasn’t the book I wanted".
eBay wouldn’t remove the feedback and consequently my seller rating remained low for a year, limiting the number of items I could list Confused

Travis1 · 09/05/2021 10:40

I work for a company that sells through multiple channels including eBay. Someone ordered and then asked if they could collect. Messaged saying no, delivery only - can’t risk a case with a £400 item when there’s no POD - items dispatched next morning. Following morning in a meeting and see a random couple wandering about the car park, yup they were there to pick up their item and absolutely raging at us ‘scamming’ them 🤦🏻‍♀️😳

Redrum2222 · 09/05/2021 10:42

Grin I know..her husband left the negative feedback saying 'wife thought it was a dress I am so disappointed!' I replied to the feedback saying 'you bloody married her!'

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 09/05/2021 10:50

I had beautiful Mexican pine wardrobes that just would not fit up the staircase in my new house at all, couldn’t even get them through the door frames so put them on eBay. Waited in all day for a couple to turn up to collect, when they arrived the man was ready and raring to get them but the woman stood there staring at them, stroking her chin. She decided they just didn’t look like they did in the photos (Hmm) so she didn’t want them. Her OH looked mortified and was super apologetic, she just stormed out of our house in a strop.

Also had a woman who wanted to return an unused baby item because she found one stray (human) hair on it. I apologised and told her it was probably one of mine when I was packaging it up but I didn’t think it warranted a return. She then started spilling her guts to me about the fact her Mother had just died and she didn’t need stress Confused.

cookiecreampie · 09/05/2021 10:51

I bought something, it still wasn't dispatched 2 weeks later so I emailed them and said can you please send it or refund me. They said they tried to refund me but it didn't work. I said " OK that's fine, just send me it please".
2 weeks later, still nothing so I just left a bad review saying I never received the item I paid for. Straight away she messaged back with a passive aggressive " just wondering why you left a bad review, you said it was ok that I couldn't refund you". So she thought it was ok for her to not send me the item or give me my money back. I gave up as a lost cause, reported her and strangely enough a couple of months later a refund came through.

notapizzaeater · 09/05/2021 10:57

People are bat shit crazy. I sold a bundle of 15 men's office shirts. When I was packing them I found another couple so I bunged them in free and messaged to say I'd sent extras free. They left negative feedback because they hadn't wanted the extra ones ?

Spiceyornicey · 09/05/2021 11:04

I’m not sure about adding little extras to parcels, even extras of the the same in a bundle. I find it annoying but I guess I could be the exception. I recently purchased some vintage baby clothes and the seller decided to add a bag full of old cuddly toys and rattles to the order. Not vintage and not nice. It was just clutter, like they’d offloaded their disposal problem onto me !

hedgehogger1 · 09/05/2021 11:33

I've completely given up on eBay. Found it all to stressful. Things I'd sent in perfect condition suddenly developed massive stains in the post... just seemed to be losing me money and causing me hassle. I just charity shop it all now

MyGrassIsBrowner · 09/05/2021 11:44

Sold a rather expensive pram on eBay some months back (collection only) already dropped the price of it on my listing by nearly half to get it gone even though I was devestated as it was hardly used and worth so much more. Anyway, seller messaged me asking if they could have it, we agreed on a price and pick up date - great, all was well.
The buyers turned up, around 11pm at night, three of them stood there with mcdonalds in their hands 😖 couldn't speak a word of English and had the cheek to start bartering with me, saying they'd driven hours and had spent a lot on petrol, couldn't no longer afford what I was asking. So I basically said tough shit, you either walk away with the pram at the agreed price or walk away with nothing. One of them started getting angry so I said you better calm down or I am calling the police. Thankfully my DH was with me at the time and intervened. In the end they gave us the asking price and skulked off back to their car, watched them throw it in the back of their car and screeched off.. couldn't believe it 😆

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 09/05/2021 11:56

I had a buyer who turned up 24 hrs early to pick up a climbing frame I sold on eBay. Luckily it was already dismantled and dh was home otherwise it could have been a pita.

JackieTheFart · 09/05/2021 11:58

God I hate ebay.

I had an account years ago that I used to use quite a lot - stopped though when nothing ever seemed to sell for more than 99p. It was actually quite upsetting to put shoes on there for a fiver and for them not to sell.

I recently started up a new account to sell some stuff. I sold it in bundles, there was about ten bundles. Most didn't bother leaving feedback - and the final one, where I added in extras (this was nail stamping stuff, I added in at least two additional plates and a stamper) and packaged in a nice box, I got no feedback at all. Just pissed me off that they couldn't even be bothered. Petty, I know. But irritating all the same.

I closed my account in a pure rage when ebay wouldn't stop sending me emails - I was getting 3 or four a day when I had said I had ticked all the marketing exclusions.

Maybe cutting off my nose to spite my face but there's plenty of other places I can get rid of my old stuff! Grin

MySoCalledStrife · 09/05/2021 12:01

I sold a dress on eBay. It was a black dress with white stars on it. I advertised it as "black dress with white star pattern." Sold the dress. Buyer raised a case on receiving the item on the grounds that she thought the dress would have gold stars on it and demanded a refund. eBay sided with her! Hmm

CathyorClaire · 09/05/2021 12:13

I've just started selling on eBay again after only buying for years because of the hassle.

In just a couple of months I've had one buyer ask for a refund for an item not as described because of the defects mentioned in the listing. She then admitted she hadn't read it Confused

Yesterday I got a claim for an item not received. Gave them the tracking which showed it as delivered three days before. This was something I'd added a few extra bits to which I found after the listing. Scamming prick retracted the INR straight away but it just goes to confirm no good deed goes unpunished Hmm

TBF most transactions have been OK but it still feels like a Wild West for sellers Angry

UpTheLaganInABubble · 09/05/2021 12:50

I once received a top with stains on it, messaged the seller for a refund and the reply I got was "If you go to the supermarket they sell an item called soap powder" Confused Grin
