What do you do holiday in the UK?

With it looking unlikely that we will get a holiday abroad this year, i was wondering about whether to try and book something in the UK despite the prices being horrendous.
However, looking out of the window as the rain lashes down , i am wondering what do you actually DO on holiday in the uk?
We don't have small children so the attractions that you would take them to are out, I'm sick of going for walks, you can't do museums every day.
If the weather is like this, do you just stay indoors and read a book or watch tv? So like being home but more expensive?

Abroad, you can go the beach or the pool and just enjoy being warm to your bones or take a boat out etc on days you don't want to go sight seeing etc

Board Games
Drives Out
Cafes / Restaurants
Museums
Read
Walks (OK, I know you said you are sick of walks, but sometimes a different environment helps)
Cycling
Boating

Depends what you like I guess - OK, you’re fed up of walking around your neighbourhood, but what about a coastal path if you’re dressed well? What about camping / campervanning? If you drive, planning a multi-stop trip along an interesting route? Going to a city you haven’t been to before?

If I didn’t have a three yo I’d be out of here Grin

MissyB1 · 08/05/2021 13:18

Yes basically OP you have summed it up. Depending on where you stay there might be attractive towns villages to visit, but you just walk around them (potentially in lashing rain) admire them, then fight for a space in cafe or pub to eat your lunch. I have often found UK self catering holidays a bit stressful and depressing.

You could do a UK hotel, the nice ones are seriously £££ but its much nicer and less stressful And you would have indoor pool / spa etc.. to retreat to in the crap weather.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 08/05/2021 13:18

Camping is like being in hell quite frankly.
If we go it will be a cottage somewhere.
When the kids were little we had a couple of lovely uk holidays, going crabbing, bodyboarding, theme parks etc
But now everyone is an adult , it all just feels really unappealing

It's been two years since we have been anywhere and i feel a bit depressed by it all

Loads. We love exploring and sightseeing. Do you not do this abroad?
We are members of the National Trust, we visit gardens, caves, wildlife parks/zoos, go on scenic rail journeys, other places of interest, museums, art galleries, boat trips, brewery tours etc.

There are loads of options. Just google "things to do in (place of interest) and see what comes up. The only constraints will probably be that you will need to pre-book.

Floralnomad · 08/05/2021 13:21

I agree it depends what you like doing but sitting by a pool and going to the beach would be my worst nightmare anyway . I generally keep my UK breaks to 4/5 days so a couple of days doing NT /EH places , a day pony trekking or llama walking , a day at a wildlife park add in the nice meals out and it’s a pleasant break .

SunIsComing · 08/05/2021 13:25

Wait for the rain to stop. Sit in traffic jams. Pay extortionate fees for everything. Think about wine o’clock.

SunIsComing · 08/05/2021 13:25

And wish I was anywhere but the U.K.

17bluebirds · 08/05/2021 13:26

What do you do on holidays abroad? All I can think of is sitting in the sun, getting uncomfortably hot, then going in a pool ,just to cool down, then returning to the side to get hit again.
I prefer the type of holiday where I can see new places, museums, houses, gardens, shops, cafes, perhaps a theme park, theatre or cinema.

Going to the beach and pool sounds so boring.

NeonStones · 08/05/2021 13:27

You can take boats out and things in the UK if you go to the right place. You just need to investigate options in your area. There are wildlife watching boat trips in Cornwall, Scotland and so on. There are canoeing, paddle boarding, climbing and other activity options. Museums, stately homes, stone circles, Roman ruins, all sorts of stuff. We get millions of tourists from other countries every year, they aren't just sitting in reading books.

Spudlet · 08/05/2021 13:27

Go for long walks up mountains. But we really do like walking... 🤷‍♀️

Alfaix · 08/05/2021 13:29

UK holidays aren’t a holiday as such, just a series of days out- NT, zoo etc. The odd trip to a beach lugging stuff from a car also.
We did it last year and am hoping not to have to do it again!

Scienceisnotopinion · 08/05/2021 13:40

Lol, millions of turist from abroad dont come to sit in a caravan watching the rain.
OP we have young kids so we love camping, they roam all day and we sit by the fore with friends. We only stay if weather is decent tho, and stay by the sea so we can swim in the freezing water..

Tickly · 08/05/2021 13:40

National trust, spa day, local foraging walk instead of just walking or a history tour, biking, sailing - invest in some wet weather gear of course! Boat trip on the canals, crabbing by the ocean. Plan days around amazing lunch and dinner options or Vineyard stays.

RampantIvy · 08/05/2021 13:41

Erm, that is a holiday to me. I like visiting hot countries for the weather and beach and pool use, but I also like to explore. For example in Kos we visited a volcanic island, walked around a salt lake, took a bus to Kos town and sat by the pool and swam in the sea.

On a holiday to Shropshire one year we visited:
Biddulph Grange Garden
Wenlock priory
Went to a farmer’s market
Did the Severn Valley Railway
Walked Wenlock Edge
Blist’s Hill open air museum
The museums in Ironbridge Gorge
To West Midland’s Safari Park
Kinver Edge cave houses
Benthall Hall

We had a fantastic time.

For a lot of us holidays aren't just about sitting on a beach/by a pool. I like to do both.

UserAtRandom · 08/05/2021 13:46

I wouldn't be interested in an abroad holiday that was literally sitting by the pool all week, so I don't really see UK holidays as being any different to ones abroad. Basically they are a series of trips out to see places of interest, in an area that you don't normally go to/don't know very well.

If you don't want to do much you can still curl up with a book or watch a film or play games ... all the things you would be doing abroad if you didn't want to sight see. Because you're away from home, you are (hopefully) not stressed out by the normal day to day annoyances, hence it's a break.

pursuedbyablackdog · 08/05/2021 13:50

I hear you op! The only thing I would add is being away means non of the endless chores need doing, so I don't feel guilty reading a book and lashing around...admittedly I'm lazing tidy, but I do feel a bit guilty as the kitchen and bathroom need a good cleanBlushGrin

pursuedbyablackdog · 08/05/2021 13:50

Lashing? Lazing!

pursuedbyablackdog · 08/05/2021 13:52

Ffs bloody autocorrect today not tidy!

Sirzy · 08/05/2021 13:53

If you don’t like U.K. holidays then stay at home! If you go away with an attitude it will be shit it will be shit.

There is loads of wonderful things to do in the U.K. depending where you are and what you enjoy.

Mrsdarwin · 08/05/2021 13:55

I don’t mind a UK holiday if it doesn’t rain all day. I had exactly the same thoughts, what do you do if it’s raining all day on a UK holiday? I wouldn’t want to go for a walk or explore the local area in heavy rain. We have young children who aren’t at an age to play board games yet.

We went on a UK break a few years ago and ended up at a soft play as it was raining and not much else to do. We had already been on a walk in the rain 🤣🤣

RunnerDown · 08/05/2021 14:02

We go to the west coast of Scotland or to the Scottish Highlands and have a cottage as a base. We go on drives through amazing scenery - often going for walks at the end of the drive - to hidden secluded beaches or to natural attractions ( eg the Quiraing or the Fairy Pools in Skye) We do boat trips when the weather is fair , and have seen whales, seals, eagles and pods of dolphins. Or we visit natural heritage sites like the Black Houses or Callenish standing stones in Lewis.
If it’s raining you can find a cosy pub or you can sit reading a book. Doing this in a cottage right at the loch side where you can potentially watch otters is a bit different to sitting at home IMO.
I really enjoy these kind of holidays .

NoFashion · 08/05/2021 14:04

We got to attractions mainly. Unless it's a coastal holiday.

Theme parks. Farms. Zoos. Museums. Etc etc.

We're the sort of people who need entertaining.

Kids are VERY happy with a pool/beach. But walks in the country get tiresome after an hour or two.

So we'll do whatever the local tourist spots are. Or our holidays are booked specially for the attraction. Alton Towers hotel/water park. Harry Potter Tour. Etc.

We do the same as we would abroad. Beaches are pretty boring to us and would get 1/2 a day at most. So, walks, museums and local attractions (could be zoos, aquariums or whatever) boat trips depending on area and weather, castles, viewpoints....
