What do you do holiday in the UK?

With it looking unlikely that we will get a holiday abroad this year, i was wondering about whether to try and book something in the UK despite the prices being horrendous.
However, looking out of the window as the rain lashes down , i am wondering what do you actually DO on holiday in the uk?
We don't have small children so the attractions that you would take them to are out, I'm sick of going for walks, you can't do museums every day.
If the weather is like this, do you just stay indoors and read a book or watch tv? So like being home but more expensive?

Abroad, you can go the beach or the pool and just enjoy being warm to your bones or take a boat out etc on days you don't want to go sight seeing etc

I hate beaches too (ok if it’s a remote and quotient one and we aren’t expected to sunbathe - yuk) and don’t like hotel holidays (too many people!)

coogee · 08/05/2021 18:58

We relax, just like would abroad.

Do you have to do things?

CadburyCake · 08/05/2021 19:01

I think this is a great year for a U.K. city break - London, York, Edinburgh... lots of attractions and things to do that aren’t child centric. Museums, galleries, restaurants, historic sites, I even have hopes for theatres.

A National Trust day out is what we do locally. I can’t get too excited about that on holiday.

But there is such a variety of national trust properties so what you can do at one on holiday could be massively different to the ones you normally visit

Walks
NT places or similar
Quaint villages
Walking along a beach
Spending day on the beach
Pitch n putt or crazy golf
Sport attraction
Museum
Somewhere with a good view

I agree. The only local NT property is a garden that we have been round loads of time. It is nothing like Housesteads, Cragside or Castle Drogo for example.

To be honest OP, if I got taken on a holiday where the only thing to do was sit by the pool or a beach and enjoy the warm weather I’d be on the next flight home. I’d also have a bloody mutiny on my hands.

I’ve travelled extensively and I prefer Cornwall to most places I’ve been. We do exactly what we would do if we were abroad.
Road trip!!
Eden Project
The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Eating and shopping at harbour towns such as Looe or Padstow on the way through.
Tintagel
Waking on Bodmin moor. When it’s raining drinking at eating at Jamaica Inn on the moor.
Tin mine tours
Sandy beaches
Rockpooling on rocky beaches (best time to do it is when it’s wet)
Visiting art galleries
Going to the theatre (the Minack!)
Museums
Boats from Fowey or to the Isles of Scilly
Going to local gigs
Brewery/distillery tours
At Michaels Mount.
Weirding out at standing stones
Fishing
Cycling
Walking
Go Ape type places
Eating rungs you can’t get at home (my kids just eat their weight in different fish every day)
Visiting local markets
Going to events like the Pirate festival in Penzance
Beach cookouts

Good luck with booking somewhere though. It’s going to be impossible this late in the year I’m afraid...

Have you read through the book they give you? You could always cancel your NT membership and open a EH one for your holiday and swap back when you get home
@PurpleWh1teGreen if the Black Country museum (highly recommend) and the back to backs appeal to you, check out avoncroft if you’re taking a car avoncroft.org.uk/avoncrofts-work/
Apologies for hi jacking the thread, but that looks fascinating

We are going glamping this year again. We went two years ago. It rained the whole time. We went to pendower beach in the rain. We visited old castles in the rain. We went on a woodland walk in the rain. We visited an old mill and listened to the rain pound on the roof. We basically appreciated the beauty of everything around us and it was actually one of our favourite holidays.

TheChosenTwo · 08/05/2021 20:27

If we have a U.K. break we always stay by the sea. We find restaurants that have good reviews in the local area and book some evening meals in advance. dh likes fishing so he books boat trips for him and the dc (I don’t have sea legs Grin), rockpooling and crabbing with a lunch out somewhere to break it up a bit, book surfing or paddle boarding lessons for dh and the dc (I hold the bags - I’m not into the sea here to be honest!), maybe walk round a castle or something. In general, we try and make the most of the weather but are prepared to throw money at the situation if needs be and it’s pissing it down!
Our dc are 17, 15 and 9 and still enjoy things like theme parks, amusements/arcades, getting an ice cream, crazy golf, card games, board games, reading if at home and need to have some down time, loads of stuff really.
Obviously it depends on where you go.
I have to say, I’m not a massive fan of the countryside either as a destination. The views are nice for a walk for one of the days but aside from that we aren’t into hiking or walks longer than about 5 miles as a family, I’d be bored with just hills around me.
We do big family holidays in the U.K. over New Years and always book somewhere pretty, usually quite rural, I mean it’s nice but most of them go out on 15 mile hikes every day - I prefer to meet them at the pub afterwards Grin

EllaPaella · 08/05/2021 20:38

@HoulYerWheesht you've described my perfect holiday. I love Cornwall.

Cam2020 · 08/05/2021 22:10

@HoulYerWheesht @EllaPaella, me too... And what I shall be doing soon enough!

LemonRoses · 08/05/2021 22:26

It depends where we go and who we go with.
Our cottage on IOW we swim, go out for meals, walk the dog, sit and watch the world go by over a coffee. Occasionally shopping, but not often. Read. Find a pub with live music.

Lake District we’ll swim, walk, potter around Keswick, sail, go to Spa, go for meals. Read. Jigsaw. Cards. Theatre maybe.

If we’re on a city break we’ll go to theatre, find a Spa maybe, art galleries, cinema, meals out, cathedrals or castles etc.

The weather doesn’t change what we do.
