Hi – I’ve got a bit bored with my podcast selection. Can anyone help me with something fresh? I love listening to podcasts while I do the housework or go out for a run. My favourite to date have been the Michelle Obama series, Americast, Reasons to be cheerful, this American life and I sometimes find a good Ted Talk.

Can anyone suggest something new? I’d quite like to get stuck into something, but can’t really find anything at the moment – all just seems to be endless interviews and I’m getting a bit bored with that format.

Thank you thank you!

Great thread, thanks IOP, walks sorted for at least a month.

Again though, suggest Meet David Sedaris (I’m not his agent Grin, he’s just unique and brilliant)

The fall line and into the dark

Although you won't like the fall line if you are gender critical as it covers murdered and missing trans people as well as women.

I found them both when searching for ethical or non exploitative true crime. I'm interested in true crime but I don't want to listen to something that's really fetishising serial killers

Mike Duncan has excellent podcasts both revolutions and history of Rome are great.

I like some radio 4 ones too. Like in our time, the kitchen cabinet and thinking allowed.

I also think my brother my brother and me is hilarious.

soyabean · 08/05/2021 20:55

Funniest is My Dad wrote a Porno
Shrine of Duty also v funny
And Off Menu
The Allusionist is v interesting about language
Stance is excellent-current affairs, culture and arts, from a point of view that always considers equality issues
On the Ledge if you like houseplants
Death Sex and Money is wide ranging and very gentle and respectful of interviewees which I like
Code Switch- on race

Just thought of another one
The Bechdel Cast looks at movies from a feminist perspective based on the Bechdel test
The Bechdel test is whether or not 2 named female characters in a movie talk about something other than men for at least 2 lines of dialogue. Scary how many movies fail this test

DemiBourbon · 08/05/2021 21:36

@MayflowerMaisie thanks, I’ve just followed all of those on Spotify.

bonfireheart · 09/05/2021 09:30

I find My Dad Wrote a Porno a bit too try hard.

Neonprint · 09/05/2021 09:42

I just listened to shagged married annoyed. I got minutes in and abandoned. They're so annoying, really not funny absolutely could not get away with it.Blush

I'm from Newcastle so I think the accents were a bit exaggerated. Shame as people in real life have raved about this too. Also the laughing at their own jokes is a no for me.

I also tried my dad wrote a porno. Got a bit further. But just felt it was grim that his dad would do that. (I'm assuming it's real).

I do laugh a lot in real life, but seemingly I have no podcast sense of humour. I'll keep looking for funny ones.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 09/05/2021 10:02

I didn't like Shagged, Married, Annoyed either - they were just laughing at their own jokes the whole time?! (Chris Ramsey is immensely shaggable though Smile)

My Dad Wrote A Porno though, I have literally been bent over laughing at at points!

On a different note, I listened to an excellent podcast called 'Believed' about Larry Nassar, the gymnastics physio who sexually abused all those girls.

And there is a BBC podcast called 'Death in Ice Valley' about the case of the Isdal Woman, which is so interesting - they have never figured out who she was Sad

I have started listening to the 'Root of Evil' podcast mentioned upthread, mind blown indeed, bizarre!

LunaNorth · 09/05/2021 10:08

I’m enjoying Standard Issue - current affairs/culture from a feminist standpoint.

Backlisted - each week they discuss a ‘forgotten’ book. It’s really broadened my reading.

Radiolab - science based stuff, but really interesting.

ItsCokeFFS · 09/05/2021 12:22

@Letsgetreadytocrumble

I felt the same about Shrine of Duty.

The giggling and shrieking every few minutes was like listening to nails down a blackboard.

I loved Obsessed with Line of Duty but the Sara Millican episode was almost unlistenable to for the same reason.

SappysCurry · 09/05/2021 12:27

No Strings Attached (itv news podcast) a 6 parter about Emile Cilliers
‘The parachute killer’ what an eye opener

I was the same with shagged married annoyed. The first one I listened to she was calling their child a prick. Thought it was horrible.

@Thirtyrock39

My favourites are:- You're wrong about - really informative and funny at the same time and really makes you see things in a new way . I'd recommend starting with one of the Diana episodes or the oj Simpson ones, also topics like stranger danger, disco, Stockholm syndrome

The other one I've loved recently is sentimental in the city - proper snorting laughing in the car type of podcast

We have very similar taste! So glad someone else is listening to these.

How much they are confused by the horse related aspects of the Royal family is great.

Tealvelvet · 11/05/2021 07:29

@Thirtyrock39 @1990s @RainyAfternoon I think we have similar tastes so you'd probably like these two as well
InsideNumberNine · 11/05/2021 07:39

Red handed is my favourite - it's the only one I pay for!

Castaway with Laura Whitmore is a podcast about which podcasts celebrities listen to which is interesting. From there I found Best Pick which does a deep dive on a different Oscar best picture winner each week. The Dropout was great, I've also got into Louis Theroux Grounded.

Divebar2021 · 11/05/2021 07:58

LostToucan · 11/05/2021 20:18

I enjoyed The Battersea Poltergeist and The Lovecraft Investigations (both on BBC Sounds).
