Creepy house vibes...

Just looking to see if anyone else has had this feeling before?

We went to SIL's this evening for a BBQ as they have just recently moved house- sat outside in their lovely new garden; although the house itself is Georgian and very old.

We actually established recently that a local tragic accident whereby an elderly lady passed away; was actually the lady that owned the home before them.
All of her belongings (furniture wise) are still in the home and being used by SIL and family.. rugs, chairs, units and curtains.

Anyway the conversation was flowing all evening, chatting about their small DS and his time in nursery, amongst other (not creepy) things.

I tried my best to hold on; but was absolutely bursting for the loo so asked if I could go - SIL pointed the way and off I went.

I can't explain the FEELING In the house. I just felt an overwhelming sense of dread.. all my hairs stood on end and I felt watched by every angle..It was really strange.

Needless to say I went to the loo, washed my hands and practically ran out of there again! I didn't mention this to SIL for fear of both freaking them out but also sounding completely ridiculous Blush but I've NEVER felt like that before!

So it got me thinking (and feeling grateful for our new build home!!)
Has anybody ever experienced something like this before; or living in an older, maybe creepy house?

I would love to hear your stories!!

I live in a very old house with a history. Below is a list of the things we have experienced:

Marcipex · 08/05/2021 00:00

I’ve only ever felt like when I’m alone in woods.
Have your relatives bought the house?

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:02

Nada?

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:02

@Marcipex yes they bought it around a year or so ago. Sadly due to covid we have not been round until this evening.

Did your SIL mentioned they'd had any odd occurrences. I've felt something similar before a number of times in older buildings.

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:04

@Marcipex (they've only actually moved in around 6/7 months ago though due to a few repairs needing doing first) 😅

Biscusting! Your list of experiences hasn't appeared.

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:06

@Trixie78 no they haven't mentioned anything strange; other than one time hearing a VERY deep, guttural cough down the baby monitor around a month after moving in; in their DS's room.

After speaking to neighbours they advised of the sad lassi g of an elderly man years and years ago, who has his end of life care in that bedroom. His bed is still in the house...

Have you not seen Poltergeist OP? Newbuilds can be scary too! DH was convinced ours was haunted when we first moved in.

Did you feel like that about the house before you learned the former owner had died in what I'm assuming is unpleasant circumstances?

When I was little, we moved into a creepy old house. Someone made the mistake of mentioning in front of me the former owner died in the house and after that I was convinced it was haunted. I was only 6 at the time to be fair. It was creepy though, old ornate ceilings and fireplaces, all the woodwork was painted black and the back door used to make 'mooing' sounds when it was windy. My parents definitely bought it as a fixer upper and we left after three years. Thank God!

Teapotsandtablecloths · 08/05/2021 00:11

My university halls used to be a mental asylum. Definitely got creepy vibes there.

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:11

@BowserJr ohh yes I've seen it!
We are so happy here - lived in an old cottage before and that didn't have any strange vibes; either.. this house is lovely and feels so happy ☺️

Bless you - that must have put you on edge!!!

Many years ago I was house hunting and went to view a house with my mum.

As we entered the property I felt very uncomfortable and this just increased as we went round. I felt revulsion and nausea, I felt I needed to leave really quickly.

As we left we both turned to each other and said 'someone was murdered there.'

I have absolutely no idea if that was the case but I would never enter that house again.

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 00:14

@MarthaJonesPhone oh my god that sounds terrifying 😳

I couldn't believe that people actually lived there, the feeling was so intense!

halfhope · 08/05/2021 00:39

Yes, my grandfather's family home. His sister died as a teen and her ghost had supposedly been spotted a few times in the house. In the front room you felt as if you were being watched. The people who rented the house after the last sibling died experienced problems and we had to get someone in to 'clear' the house.

FiveGs · 08/05/2021 05:46

When we were house hunting, the 'vibe' or feeling of the place was the first thing I had in the front of my mind as we crossed the threshold, I've been in a few places that made me uncomfortable. I've had that get-in-get-out feeling too OP.

I think it's likely that there will be death linked to most houses, especially older properties. The house we eventually bought is from the1850s but has a lovely, calm feeling.

Bythemillpond · 08/05/2021 06:14

I have lived in very old houses but the worst was a new build. It was built on what was once the garden of an old Victorian house.
The person who had bought the plot went bankrupt, the next person to buy it went bankrupt the next person to buy did actually build the house of his dreams but never moved in it fled the country to stop himself having to declare bankruptcy
After having a successful business my family very nearly declared bankruptcy as all work dried up overnight

Every owner of the Victorian house next door
Suffered the same fate.
It was only when we had lived there for 5 years did we find out that there had been a church next to the Victorian house and the grave yard was where the houses were built.

I never felt comfortable being alone in that house
The landing which was like a large reception room that you had to cross to get to the stairs was the creepiest place I have ever experienced

It was like there were malevolent people watching me as I made the dash across the landing and down the stairs.

I would never be alone in the house even if I had come home from school and it was pouring with rain. I would stand outside for hours.
I have lived in an old thatch cottage which I am sure was haunted as strange things would occur but I never felt the fear that I felt in that new build house.

Bythemillpond · 08/05/2021 06:23

Only other time I got that sane feeling was few years ago I was on a main road and needed to be heading in another direction
I pulled off the main road but some one was behind me so I turned down this road that was a cul de sac. I drove to the end where there was a turning area. I have never felt more like someone wanted me dead or something horrible was about to happen it was so creepy the vibe I was getting in my car
No idea where it was exactly but keep expecting to see on the news that a load of dead bodies are discovered in a 1930s semi at the top of a cul de sac in north London

Whingey · 08/05/2021 06:46

Terrace house in north London mans wife died and stayed as earthbound spirit. Took shapes of animals to scare us. Light a candle and tell them to go to the light

BloodyGoodRep · 08/05/2021 06:49

Not so much a creepy feeling but DP live in a standard terrace with just 2 bedrooms upstairs (bathroom down by the kitchen). His loft has been converted for storage and is accessible via ladders, and either side of the entry are banisters. So when you look up you can see the bannisters and the ceiling. Every time I look up
There (it’s above the dryer on a little landing so hard not to) I have the image of a man hanging of the banister. He’s wearing jeans and a reddish shirt, brown hair. It really really creeped me out the first few times to the point I would never use the dryer. After about 18 months I was talking to DP about using the loft more and he said to be honest I don’t like going up
There, whenever I use the dryer I can picture a man hanging above me 😧. He then went on to describe him exactly like I see him.

We’ve looked into the history of the house but can’t find any record of a suicide but it’s so creepy

cakefanatic · 08/05/2021 06:59

My student house had a really creepy vibe. Big old Victorian terrace. It didn’t feel especially malevolent, but it always had a feeling of people being around and noises etc even if you were home alone.

My bedroom had a really calm feeling and I spent almost all of my time there. After a few months we discovered that the floorboards had runes carved into them all around the room.
