Creepy house vibes...

Just looking to see if anyone else has had this feeling before?

We went to SIL's this evening for a BBQ as they have just recently moved house- sat outside in their lovely new garden; although the house itself is Georgian and very old.

We actually established recently that a local tragic accident whereby an elderly lady passed away; was actually the lady that owned the home before them.
All of her belongings (furniture wise) are still in the home and being used by SIL and family.. rugs, chairs, units and curtains.

Anyway the conversation was flowing all evening, chatting about their small DS and his time in nursery, amongst other (not creepy) things.

I tried my best to hold on; but was absolutely bursting for the loo so asked if I could go - SIL pointed the way and off I went.

I can't explain the FEELING In the house. I just felt an overwhelming sense of dread.. all my hairs stood on end and I felt watched by every angle..It was really strange.

Needless to say I went to the loo, washed my hands and practically ran out of there again! I didn't mention this to SIL for fear of both freaking them out but also sounding completely ridiculous Blush but I've NEVER felt like that before!

So it got me thinking (and feeling grateful for our new build home!!)
Has anybody ever experienced something like this before; or living in an older, maybe creepy house?

I would love to hear your stories!!

I think about it often, how many families have lived in our house before us. I’d love to know the history of who has lived and died here

rwalker · 08/05/2021 07:06

my first house was a 4 storey terrace alway felt creepy never walked round with lights off .
Knocked the top floor into 1 massive room original roll top bath in corner dome window stunning . Slept in it once (say slept hardly slept) laid there all nigh very cold and paranoid that a someone head would pop up over the bannister opposite my bed as they came upstairs .

Never said anything to anyone after i moved both my sister and friend told me that house gave them the creeps .

It isn't creepy for people to die in houses, it's called dying at home and is where quite a lot of us want to die and do die. My wife died at home and so did my mum. It's normal.

@Teapotsandtablecloths did you go to Bangor?

I lived in a beautiful house a few years ago that had a feeling but that feeling only developed once we moved in. One evening after work I was in the kitchen looking in the fridge deciding what was for dinner when my partner walked past and went up the stairs. I thought it was a bit weird he didn't say hi after coming home but thought he might be desperate for a wee. After a few mins I shouted up the stairs but there was no answer and it was all dark... I shouted again, obviously turned the lights on and went to check. It wasn't him, it wasn't anyone!

The most unnerving one I've heard though is from a friend. When she was a toddler her family were struggling with money so bought a second hand sofa. She refused to sit next to her mum because there was an old man already sat there Confused. Her mum got rid of the couch.

MilkWasABadChoice · 08/05/2021 07:28

I think that might be the point re @Biscusting - nothing bad happened!!

Trixie78 · 08/05/2021 07:31

@mygreylife
no they haven't mentioned anything strange; other than one time hearing a VERY deep, guttural cough down the baby monitor around a month after moving in; in their DS's room.

That would be enough for me to put the house on the market. I remember clearly when I've felt this, one when I worked at a hospital in the 90s. It was an old Victorian building and I used to do nightshifts. Walking anywhere round that building I used to feel constantly watched and I once felt someone walk behind me but there was no one there. It was a creepy building so could have been my imagination but the feelings were so strong . Another time I felt like this was in the basement (which wasn't creepy) at my old house but as soon as I walked out of the basement the feelings would completely disappear.

I also had this strong feeling once in a toilet in a pub in Nottingham that I wasn't alone and the lights turned themselves back on as I was leaving (it was a friends pub end of the night so I'd turned the lights off as I walked out). It didn't feel malicious, just that there was something there 🤨

Tbh OP sounds a bit jealous of this lovely period property. As a Pp has suggested, it’s perfectly natural to both be born and die in your home- there’s no reason why this would be a sinister occurrence and by this logic surely all geriatric wards in hospitals/ICUs would be deeply creepy places.

I have felt a couple of presences in my time, nothing sinister, just the feeling that something’s ‘there’

ouchyouchyow · 08/05/2021 07:43

Grow up OP. Haunted house? You've watched too many movies

Absolutely to death at home being normal. The house I grew up in had had four family deaths and remained unhaunted. The house we live in now dates from 1845, probably had countless ‘normal’ deaths over the years, and even had a locally-notorious double murder in 1920 (one of the victims was shot on the landing outside my bedroom but dragged himself downstairs to the hall, the other in what is now my nine year old’s bedroom — the enquiry is publicly available) and we remain unhaunted. Unrelatedly, there are also likely to be long-buried bodies in the garden because of the former institution we neighbour.
mygreylife · 08/05/2021 08:03

@ouchyouchyow I've never said it's haunted and don't watch horror movies! I literally just said I had a really strange vibe... didn't say that I saw anything!

Yes I’m one of my first flats. The hall way at the top of the stairs seemed to be always very still and loud in silence - if that makes sense. I’d dread going in to my dds room in the middle of the night as I had to pass through it. Always had dreams where my ankles were being pulled whilst asleep and being watched from the door way.

Years later I bumped in to a friend and they mentioned my old flat and said they thought the landing was really creepy. Then a short while later I learned that some one had hanged them selfs there years before I moved in Shock

mygreylife · 08/05/2021 08:05

@CrumpetsForAll I've lived in a beautiful period property before and loved it! I'm really happy for them - not in the slightest big jealous! I literally just thought it would be interesting to see if anybody else has experienced the same ' weird feeling' I'm not saying it's sinister or haunted or anything of the sort!!!!

I can see Biscusting's list - can't you? To be honest, it's exactly the same list I would make.

Lunariagal · 08/05/2021 09:04

@Teapotsandtablecloths

My university halls used to be a mental asylum. Definitely got creepy vibes there.
Storthes Hall by any chance??
Whingey · 08/05/2021 09:16

House in Clacton built where a farm used to be. Farmer killed a girl who haunted place nobody stayed longer than 3 months

Stroller15 · 08/05/2021 09:22

I get feelings of dread and being watched in some buildings too. My university halls was the creepiest place, only place I used to get sleep paralysis too. There's a ward on one of the old hospitals that's not being used anymore, and even in daytime I am creeped out going in there.

It's fairly easy to do that research, Shirley. Or pay a house history researcher to do it for you.

I don't believe in vibes, and ghosts and the rest of it, tbh.

Travellingraspberry · 08/05/2021 09:35

@Lunariagal I was going to ask @Teapotsandtablecloths if it was Huddersfield too!

ShirleyPhallus · 08/05/2021 09:36

@RaspberryCoulis we’ve got a number of feeds from various owners of the house, but no idea what their families / lives were like etc

That’s a great idea about the house historian though, I had no idea that kind of thing even existed

Adm1010 · 08/05/2021 09:43

I’ve felt this once . My parents were on holiday . I had the key to their house . I went round late one evening and went in the house .
I’d been in the kitchen and was pottering , watering plants etc when I suddenly felt overwhelmed with dread . It was like a weight on me , like it was pushing me . In my head I just kept hearing get out get out get out . I RAN out of the house and didn’t go back till they were home

I went back many times after with them there . Never felt a thing . I never told them about this and they don’t live there anymore

Appletreehat · 08/05/2021 09:57

My best friend when I was a child, lived in a big victorian house. It was a gorgeous house and I never felt anything weird in it until they renovated the basement and made it into another living room. I really didn't like going down there...despite it being a lovely room. I used to get goosepimples and remember not wanting to turn my back to a certain corner of the room. I felt really exposed and uneasy. Really strange. It still gives me the shivers now.

MrsTrumpDuTurnip · 08/05/2021 10:00

Yes, one lovely house I was really keen on, got a really bad vibe from one of the bedrooms. I kept going in to the other rooms to see if it happened in them and I was just being silly - nothing except this one room.. It just didn't want me there. I am aware how ridiculous that sounds but I have never in all my years of buying houses felt this way before or since

ILiveInSalemsLot · 08/05/2021 10:11

I used to house share with friends as a student and in my twenties. We lived in various properties with no issue except with one particular house.

At random times of the day, I’d get an uneasy feeling where I felt like something was there, a strange presence, and the hairs on the back of my neck would stand up. There was definitely something creepy but it seemed silly so I didn’t mention it to anyone.
One day I saw one of my housemates with a bible. I said to her that I didn’t realise she was religious and she said that she wasn’t really but she sounds silly for saying this but she feels there’s something creepy about the house.
I admitted that I felt the same and we discussed our experiences. It was so odd how similar our experiences were.
We stayed in the house for a while longer and nothing really happened. Just a vibe of the place.
