Talk to me about your lower impacted wisdom tooth extraction

I need it done under local anaesthetic at the dental hospital on Monday. I'm really scared. How bad will it be? (Can't have General or Sedation because I have no one who could be with me afterwards).

I had two impacted wisdom teeth out at once, one upper one lower. I was awake, I had local, and something to relax me after which I couldn't have cared less, I remember it all. It was fast and painless.

Silvercatowner · 07/05/2021 11:55

I had mine out - local anaesthetic. Mine were very impacted and the surgeon apparently had to excavate bone. The op was fine. I did have 2 weeks off work and needed it - it was very painful.

megletthesecond · 07/05/2021 12:04

Mine was under a local in hospital. The dentist had to gradually cut the tooth up into pieces to get it out. It was on a nerve.
It wasn't the most comfortable procedure keeping my mouth open for so long but it wasn't painful. Tbh I think he was more traumatised than I was as it was so fiddly, he even called me at home in the evening to check I was OK. I was.
Smashing bruising all down my throat and swelling for a week. But I was eating OK by day 3. Really not anywhere as awful as I'd anticipated.

Many years ago, but I had two taken out in the dentist’s chair (not both at once). Didn’t hurt at the time - plenty of local anaesthetic - but it was a real tug of war to get the bastard things out.

Half my face went black and blue for a few days afterwards so since I was working in a very public-facing role, I had to have a week off work for each one. That was a bonus, but the antibiotics I was given were the no booze type - a bit of a bummer.

keytostart · 07/05/2021 12:26

That was my other question - how do you manage to keep your mouth open for so long? Thanks all.

I had a lower wisdom tooth out under local a few years ago. I was very nervous but it was fine, uncomfortable but not painful. My face was very swollen (but not bruised) and I was on soft foods for a few days. Was very worried about wound infection so tried not to eat unless I could do the salt rinse immediately afterwards anyway. Didn’t take time off work but couldn’t exercise (running, weightlifting) for a few days afterwards.

I'm an oral surgery nurse and we do this every day. Think of it as going the to Mercedes garage when your dentist is a Fiat panda 😂

We do this all day every day, you will have an injection and once you're numb if it's buried then the gum will be cut to expose the tooth. Sometimes impacted wisdom teeth need sectioning to get put due to the angle this used water and a drill which can be a bit noisy. Once the tooth is out a couple of stitches and you're good to go. Generally we don't have issues with people staying open, it takes 10-30 mins generally start to finish. You'll be fine. Good luck!

Themadcatparade · 07/05/2021 12:38

@keytostart I have mine due soon and I’m dreading it!! Will you get me know how it goes? I’m so frightened.

@20viona if you don’t mind me jumping in and asking, mine are both pretty imbedded near the root and they are having to put me to sleep for three of mine. How bad will it be? They were going on about nerve damage they said I might have permanent sensation loss (defo temporary) due to their position and I’m frightened.

magicstar1 · 07/05/2021 12:44

I had all four out under local. Two left first, then two right. The bottom ones were impacted, but I had no problems. It took a lot of tugging....the dentist had to get up with his knee on the chair but we both laughed through it.

20viona · 07/05/2021 12:47

@Themadcatparade it all depends, sounds as those yours are quite impacted so they might need to remove a bit of bone to release them. In 6 years in oral surgery Iv never know anyone get permanent numbness to the lower lip or tongue, a few weeks and it generally comes
Back. If you did get any numbness it doesn't effect function at all and you wouldn't look any different.

Themadcatparade · 07/05/2021 13:08

@20viona thank you so much that is reassuring Flowers

Good luck @keytostart!!!!

keytostart · 07/05/2021 13:55

Had it done when I was a teen. Dentist had to sit on me to get it out, but it didn't hurt at all!

Cindersrellie · 07/05/2021 14:41

It was definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. Local, a bit uncomfortable having hands in my mouth but it was over very quickly. I followed the after care advice and had no problems with infection etc. You can do this!

eggandonion · 07/05/2021 14:45

My daughter had her final one out early last March. It looked like a complicated one, but apparently it just popped out. I'd say she was in the chair for 15 minutes. Both my daughters recovered over the weekend, and were fine with two days off.

keytostart · 08/05/2021 13:35

I think the problem is the internet is full of stories about what an horrific procedure it is and how people would choose to have it under General next time, my anxiety is at an all time high.

I've had both lower wisdom teeth out and two upper pre molars out.

The worst bit is the anesthetic injection. That scratches a bit. But once it's in you won't feel any pain, just pulling.

You can put headphones in if you need. I personally ally shut my eyes throughout the whole thing.

Recovery with both was fine. Do the salt rinses, take the pain meds and antibiotics and your fine.

I treated myself to a strawberry friji after all of these.

SandysMam · 08/05/2021 13:45

I had one out under local. My appointment was at 6pm, I got there early and was in the chair by ten to. I was out again 9 minutes later, before the appointment even began! It literally popped out!! Took it easy on foods for a few days and it healed well. You’ll be fine OP, it’s nothing for most people.

JakeChambers · 08/05/2021 13:45

I've had 2 impacted wisdom teeth out in the past year, right top and bottom. It was painless from the local and I took ibuprofen for about 2 days afterwards for a residual ache, but no other pain.

The bottom was uncomfortable as it was done. The pressure sensation was pretty overwhelming and almost all the way up the side of my head, but it doesn't take long and eases as soon as the tooth is out. My dentist said mine felt worse because of curved roots.

I'm healed up now, no stitches needed, and had no issues whatsoever. It's not the most comfortable half an hour but it was worth it to fix the awful issues I was having.

Sn0tnose · 08/05/2021 13:47

mine are both pretty imbedded near the root and they are having to put me to sleep for three of mine. How bad will it be? It was a very long time ago (I was 19) but I had all of mine taken out under general anaesthetic at the hospital and was discharged the next day. I was absolutely fine. I was nibbling (very gingerly) on a cheese sandwich that night. I had one day off where I was feeling a bit swollen and achey and then it was all back to normal. The worst thing was having to gargle with salt water afterwards.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 08/05/2021 13:53

Had one bottom wisdom extraction a couple of years ago and it was only going to take 5 mins.
However, 1.5 hours later it still wasn’t out. Pretty awful seeing as i was awake and they could drill or smash the tooth it was too hard!
Apparently my consultant said the one good thing to come out of it was osteoporosis in me was unlikely.
If i have to have the other done Im going under.
This is Very rare apparently, OP.

keytostart · 08/05/2021 14:02

@WowIlikereallyhateyou oh my god that sounds horrific!! I really don't think I would be able to keep my mouth open for that long.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 08/05/2021 14:08

Key, i did have a sore jaw, but just wanted it over and done with tbh, as i was constantly getting abcesses.

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 08/05/2021 15:48

I've had my two upper and one lower (the lower was severely impacted).
The two upper were easier. The lower impacted needed breaking up into smaller pieces. Done under local (was too much of a wimp to ask for sedation even though I'm very anxious about dentistry work).
Honesty no pain at all throughout, the team were lovely and the dentist prescribed me codeine for afterwards but I didn't need it (luckily, as it makes me very sick but sometimes that's better than pain).

It was fine, honestly. I need my other one out but they're not taking referrals atm near me.
