How much do you pay per month for water

My monthly united utilities bill is £55
It’s not a water meter I just pay a monthly fee.

Is this normal?

£35 pcm for 10 months, not metred, I like having the freedom to use a lot if needed, even though in reality we don't use much.

Lellochip · 05/05/2021 20:55

£21, not metered. That's with a single occupancy discount, can't remember what it was without that, fairly extortionate I think

wohmum · 05/05/2021 20:58

Wow! That’s huge.
We pay £29 a month, 4 bed house, 3 adults , just outside London on a water meter

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 21:02

We're on a meter and it's just been whacked up to £87 per month!

Tangledtresses · 05/05/2021 21:17

I'd love a meter but we have shared mains with the neighbours... 🙄

TheDoctorDances · 05/05/2021 21:20

On a meter. Good luck getting one removed once it’s in despite what they say.

After much argument with the water company, I’ve found out my household of two crusty careful adults who don’t waste water are paying more on a meter than we would without. ST are refusing to remove it.

Meanwhile, my neighbour washes his mates cars for them and waters his garden with a hose.

WhatsALieIn · 05/05/2021 21:21

Wow bit of a mixed bag then.

I think I might look into getting a meter fitted. I just hope I dont shoot myself in the foot and end up paying more Confused

Nothing but I did pay 250 quid to empty the septic tank a few years ago.

Eventually though I'll need to repair/ replace my victorian designed private water supply and it'll be expensive.

NeverSurrender · 05/05/2021 21:24

Fixed rate 44pm, 3 bed semi 4 people.

Goodtohear · 05/05/2021 21:26

£25 on a meter.

That won't happen as you can change back to rateable value within a set period of time (you'd need to look that up) if your bills end up being higher with a meter
TheZeppo · 05/05/2021 21:43

£14. Live on my own. East Mids.

Does the whole ‘amount of bedrooms vs residents’ idea still work? I vaguely remember if you have 4 beds but 2 people, a meter is far cheaper. Expensive if reversed tho?

DeadButDelicious · 05/05/2021 21:48

£30.08 a month. Fixed rate, United utilities in the north west. 👍🏻

DeadButDelicious · 05/05/2021 21:49

Posted to soon!

3 bed terrace, 2 adults one child.

southern82 · 05/05/2021 21:53

I'm with severn water and pay £3.98 per month!

JackieTheFart · 05/05/2021 23:30

I pay about £35 monthly.

I did a quiz on the water board’s website (united utilities) and it came out that I’d be much worse off with a meter - there’s five of us here, daily showers, daily washing machine usage etc.

RaiseTheBeastie · 06/05/2021 09:48

You can but you still need to pay the meter rate for water used until its exchanged back - so you might still end up worse off in the short term.

For those with high bills but who don't fancy a meter as they want the security of a fixed bill - it's still worth 'going through the motions' and asking yor water company if you can have one.

The first thing they have to do is send someone to do a survey to see if it's possible as not all properties are suitable.

If they do this and its a straight no then they may offer a fixed rate based on average water meter rates in your local area.

A friend of mine had this - was paying £80pm, had the survey and couldn't have a meter as there was a lamppost outside too close to the mains so the work couldn't be done. They instead switched him to a fixed average and his bills dropped to £30 a month.

qualitygirl · 06/05/2021 09:51

Nothing, no water bills where I live

leavingtime · 06/05/2021 10:33

Metered Somerset single person £17 per month.

If not on a meter it would be more than double that.

Lazierdays · 06/05/2021 11:00

I don’t get how people are paying £3 a month?! That seems crazy on a meter or fixed can you explain more please?

I paid £55 / month fixed and it’s down to £28 on a meter and they had a 2 year guarantee with that where you wouldn’t pay more that you did and if it came to more then it would be removed for free.

Penners99 · 06/05/2021 11:58

On a meter, £41 per month.

FTEngineerM · 06/05/2021 12:00

£22 on a meter, we are in the wettest place in the U.K. though... if that even makes a difference.

PinkPurpleParade · 06/05/2021 12:06

Fixed rate (old terrace house not able to have meter fitted) - £24 a month. Absolute steal for 2 adults, 4 year old and cat.

Pearbear · 06/05/2021 12:14

I pay £23 a month on an adjusted rate as they can’t fit a water meter because of the pipe work, it was lowered from around £40 8 years ago.

EmmaStone · 06/05/2021 12:17

SW area, metered, pay 6 monthly. Our August bill came to about £500, but we've got a large garden that needs a lot of water in dry spells (like last summer!). We actually have 2 meters, and they were installed when we moved house (previous owners didn't have a meter). It's about double what we paid at our last house (same water company, also metered, but didn't need to water the garden!). I've not really compared our bills before, might need to see where we're using our water most and try to reduce a bit if possible...
