Did teething cause fever in your DCs?

GP says it doesn’t but DS has some lower teeth coming through and every bloody afternoon has a low grade temp.
I’ve got a GP appointment tomorrow and have spoken to them twice over the last couple of weeks it’s been going on, but just wondered if anyone had experienced this?

He’s fine until about 1 then gets a bit warm and when I check it’s always 37.5-38 (rarely 38). He’s had a Covid test and various other tests related to something different, so I was thinking it must be teething? Or a UTI. Will try and get a sample for the GP tomorrow (that will be fun).

Anyone had the same?

Anyone? GP is probably right!

My ds did, his nursery agreed in the end he would get a slight temp with no other symptoms but was obviously teething. The second time it happened they sent him home but said he could go in the next day on calpol as he had no signs of illness.

If you look on nhs site it says teething does not cause fever however.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 05/05/2021 16:47

My son would always get a fever whilst teething, I think every child is different, some do and some don't.

Did the fevers last long? Did they stick around the whole time they were teething?

The NHS says its a myth. However my ds had not read the NHS website and certainly spiked up to 38 with teeth.

meow1989 · 05/05/2021 18:15

And they only lasted a day or so I think.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 05/05/2021 18:16

Two of my three did

Theladypatience · 05/05/2021 18:21

@meow1989 😂

He’s had this teething episode for a couple of weeks now and the running warm has been happening the whole time but not
Constantly. I’m going to get him checked out still but I wasn’t expecting it to last this long if it was teething Confused

I'm having this at the moment. Her fever was low grade on and off and I ended up thinking maybe she has an ear infection. My child is 9 months. Took her to our health centre and doctor wouldn't look her until she had a Covid test. It has come back negative but I really think it's teething.

bumbledeedum · 05/05/2021 19:23

My DS had an on and off temp (37's not 38's) for months while teething. NHS says it doesn't happened but it certainly did in his case.

FeelinHappy · 05/05/2021 20:20

Yes!! At least I think so. DD used to spike a fever at around 7pm most nights for at least a couple of months. GP said it was fine to give her one dose of Calpol a day for lots of days, as it would have time between doses to fully clear from her system.

These days I think you are only meant to medicate if they are ill with it, but she was pretty grumpy so we'd probably have done the same now. Obviously no substitute for proper medical advice.

RampantIvy · 05/05/2021 20:21

No

Theladypatience · 05/05/2021 20:37

@hirewiredays if he hadn't had a covid test previously when it started I think our GP might have thought the same. DH and I did a lateral flow just to check as we figured if we were positive DS would likely be, but negative.

@bumbledeedum months?! God I'm not sure my nerves can take it! He's only got as high as 38, and it's usually around 37.7/8 tops so sounds similar.

@FeelinHappy sounds very very similar. It either seems to be for nap time, sometimes stretches on til dinner time but he seems fine with it, we've only given him calpol when it hit 38 and he was a bit grumpy (frantically biting everything and half crying while doing it) and it was more for what seemed to be teething discomfort.

Our GP is very good so I'm hoping they can put my mind at rest, but I'm also half hoping we don't have to go in as since the hospital stay DS gets hysterical whenever anyone but me of DH tries to examine him or take his temp etc.

Thanks for posting and sharing your anecdotes, obviously it won't be taken in the place of medical advice :) Just everywhere I looked online health-wise stated that it doesn't happen!

I once read that you should actually brush their gums as it's the bacteria getting in rather than the teeth coming through that makes it painful. I managed to clean her teeth yesterday and today she has been so much better. I don't know if there is a correlation.

SemiFeralDalek · 05/05/2021 20:54

My ds used to have the hottest and redder head whenever he was cutting teeth. It was horrible and really used to freak me out.

Desmondo2021 · 05/05/2021 21:00

My children all regularly got fevers and ear infections while teething. The GP said it wasn't related but 4 kids in and I stopped listening.

BettySweaty · 05/05/2021 21:07

Ds1 had high fingertip and a few chest infections with each tooth. Was a nightmare. He clearly hadn't read the NHS website either.

Go with your instinct I say.

BettySweaty · 05/05/2021 21:08

Fingertip Hmm

Temp!!

Cheekychops73 · 05/05/2021 21:19

Yeah my nearly 7 year old spiked a temp with each of his teeth coming through. His temp would hit 39/40 & I would have to get him to A & E so they could check him out before giving him the ibuprofen/Calpol combination. It would last about 24/36 hours & within a few days a wee tooth would pop through the gum. I was told each time it was just a coincidence Hmm after 4 visits I was able to spot the signs & keep Calpol about for his teeth appearing. He obviously didn't read the nhs website either nor listen to the drs who said it was nowt to do with his teethGrin his wee baby teeth are falling out now & each one represents a lot of stress , Calpol & broken sleep.

GintyMcGinty · 05/05/2021 21:20

Yes with every single tooth

bumblingbovine49 · 05/05/2021 21:22

Mine never did. I was never convinced about fevers from teething but maybe just because DS didn't have them. I'd he had a fever he was ill,not teething .

Theladypatience · 05/05/2021 21:27

@Theladypatience

@bumblingbovine49 that’s why I posted really as I wasn’t convinced but a lot of people seem to be saying it happened to them. Weird though!

And yes yes to hot face and head! I really don’t like it, it freaks me out

Theladypatience · 05/05/2021 21:28

Not sure why I tagged myself there 🙈

AliceMcK · 05/05/2021 21:35

Yes, all 3 of mine got temps when teething, worse when teeth cutting through. Also diarrhoea, we always knew the tooth was coming when this started. I regularly ignore GPs and the nhs website, I’m much rather listen to my mum instincts.

Lostinacloud · 05/05/2021 21:38

I have 4DC and without a shadow of a doubt, teething can cause them to get a minor temperature or other illness symptoms like a runny nose. I am not a GP however I think it’s more to do with the fact that their immune system is starting to have to do some work.
Before they start to cut teeth, they are generally at an age where everything is sterilised for them and they don’t really go around on the floor much. Once they are a bit older and start to get teeth, they then spend a lot of time with their hands or other things in their mouth so it is the first time their bodies will be experiencing minor, everyday and non harmful bacteria. I think (purely as an experienced mum) that this causes them to have a temperature often at the same time as they are cutting teeth. Overall nothing to worry about and a normal immune response.
