First world problem alert 🚨

We are currently doing a once-in-a-lifetime kitchen extension and redesign.
This is the last part of the refurb of our forever family home which we bought as a bit of a wreck so very keen to get it right so I never have to have builders set foot in the house again..!

We have seen quite a few kitchen companies, and half of them have suggested getting 2 dishwashers, suggesting it’s up there with a boiling water tap as a family essential.

The company we’ve ended up going with for the kitchen was Team OneDishwasherOnly but I am now having buyers remorse and wondering if I should ask them to incorporate a second one into the design.
It would mean sacrificing some cupboard space, but I’m wondering if that’s worth it?

We are a family of 4, and love cooking, having people over, doing big roasts, so can envisage times when we would need both
But can also see that for the majority of the time, we wouldn’t

Arghhhh

@LudoBear

And what the hell is a boiling water tap?
It's an optional scalding hazard, favoured by kitchen designers.
Wexone · 05/05/2021 21:16

@DogInATent have had one nearly 7 years now. used at least 20 times a day and not once has anyone been scalded.

TheKeatingFive · 05/05/2021 21:18

I had a boiling water tap in work once, but it was always a little off 100 degrees and made shite tea.

What I do want, in my kitchen upgrade, is a chest freezer.

I didn't want a warming drawer, but we have two (as they needed to fill gaps under ovens) one tall and one short and we honestly use them loads, melting chocolate and butter for baking, warming bread for soup etc, but best of all at Christmas ........

MINCE PIES and also stollen Grin

Wafflewombat · 05/05/2021 21:21

I also have 4 ovens, tho only one is built-in...

HairyToity · 05/05/2021 21:22

Never heard of two dishwashers. I cope fine with one.

I’ve never heard of anyone getting scalded either

They are far safer than a kettle

OP
We are redoing our kitchen and I will insist of 2 dishwashers, we are a family of 6 and love entertaining there is nothing worse than waiting for a dishwasher to finish so you can reload it for another load, yes I am that lazy, and a boiling tap, we are also looking at the one that makes sparkling water. Although we have yet to actually taste the sparkling water, also a waste disposal unit, miss mine from the old house.
What I can't work out is will I use 3 ovens? Kitchen designer says 3, I think 2.
Warming drawers I have now and would not be without.

Hopeandglory · 05/05/2021 21:26

When I was designing the kitchen I mentioned to DH about wanting 2 dishwashers which he thought was over the top. Since we have had them he is a convert, to the point when eldest DD was redesigning her kitchen he bought her a second dishwasher as he felt it was daft not to have one if she had the space.

HarrietHairbrush · 05/05/2021 21:26

I would def not bother as a family of 4

I would make sure there is a quick wash on whatever you get
I regret not getting built in bins

TheKeatingFive · 05/05/2021 21:27

The point is not speed of washing.

The point is never having to unload a full one.

namesnamesnamesnames · 05/05/2021 21:28

No no no...I'd get lazy or forgetful and forget that one has a list of dirty in. I have enough trouble remembering to put one on!

Strokethefurrywall · 05/05/2021 21:29

Yes I’d definitely have 2 dishwashers when I re-do the kitchen, as well as 2 ovens (one would be an air fryer/convection oven).

Alas I sacrificed my second dishwasher space for a massive wine fridge which, on balance, is more important to me.

But if you like entertaining, cook a lot, or just use a lot of pans/plates etc then it’s definitely worth it.

Tough call 🤔

twilightcafe · 05/05/2021 21:31

Two washing machines... now you're talking!

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 05/05/2021 21:33

If you have a short enough programme for when you need things again quickly, surely that would cover it? I hope it's not like washing machines where it's really hard to get one with a fast wash now.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 05/05/2021 21:35

Do people who have 2 dishwashers just use one for storing clean stuff in, instead of emptying it, until they need to use it again?

dreamkitchenhelp · 05/05/2021 21:37

New kitchen will have 2 dishwashers. We are forgoing the silly tap but not the wine fridge.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/05/2021 21:37

I'd love a second dishwasher if it was practical to fit one in.
I'm trying to involve the DCs in their share of helping which means that things can wait around and cause delays. Or if I have an excessive load, I could do both washers in one go, job done rather than getting mentally stuck with it and it hitting a procrastination field.

I'd also love two tumble dryers as they take twice as long as the washer and it slows the process up.

GappyValley · 05/05/2021 21:39

It’s more to avoid the big stack of things that won’t fit into the dishwasher so have to wait in the sink

While that’s probably not going to be every day, it will definitely be every Sunday after a roast, or if we had a bbq, or a lunch with friends

Just to be able to stack everything, press go and then know the kitchen is clean is a big attraction for me

Do it!! 2 dishwashers . Life changing . In the scale of a new kitchen ,it’s one of the cheaper decisions. Go for it. Unless of course you enjoy looking at piles of dirty dishes all day.

Minniem2020 · 05/05/2021 21:46

Dishwashers give me the boak so the thought of 2 is the stuff of nightmares

TheKeatingFive · 05/05/2021 21:47

Dishwashers give me the boak

Say what now?

JumpLeadsForTwo · 05/05/2021 21:51

We have 2 - moved into a house designed for kosher cooking/ dining with 4 sinks!! Only ever use both at Christmas or big gatherings but could easily do without. 4 sinks is quite handy but again unnecessary- 2 ideal.

Joeblack066 · 05/05/2021 21:53

I would have 2 in a kitchen redesign. Makes perfect sense to me. I would also have 2 microwaves 🙂
