First world problem alert 🚨

We are currently doing a once-in-a-lifetime kitchen extension and redesign.
This is the last part of the refurb of our forever family home which we bought as a bit of a wreck so very keen to get it right so I never have to have builders set foot in the house again..!

We have seen quite a few kitchen companies, and half of them have suggested getting 2 dishwashers, suggesting it’s up there with a boiling water tap as a family essential.

The company we’ve ended up going with for the kitchen was Team OneDishwasherOnly but I am now having buyers remorse and wondering if I should ask them to incorporate a second one into the design.
It would mean sacrificing some cupboard space, but I’m wondering if that’s worth it?

We are a family of 4, and love cooking, having people over, doing big roasts, so can envisage times when we would need both
But can also see that for the majority of the time, we wouldn’t

Arghhhh

@Neonprint

Who the fuck has 2 dishwashers?!
About half the posters here

Have you read the thread? Confused

I'd honestly rather have 2 washing machines

BittyBatHats · 05/05/2021 20:14

I'd add a garbage disposal too! It's not great to send tons of stuff down it but all the gross little bits don't need to be cleaned out.

I’d love 2 OP. If I was in your shoes I’d get 2.

WhatHaveIFound · 05/05/2021 20:19

I have 2 dishwashers as we have a large open plan downstairs and it means I can stack them as i'm going along and can keep the kitchen island clear. Day to day we use one of them most often (it's quieter) but pre Covid the other got plenty of use when we were entertaining.

Smartiepants79 · 05/05/2021 20:21

Would only bother giving space to 2 dishwashers if I had a MUCH bigger family.
We’re a family of 4 and on a normal day to day basis I just can’t see the point.

ShiteningMcQueen · 05/05/2021 20:22

You only need 1.

Get a wine fridge instead of the second dishwasher.

LST · 05/05/2021 20:26

I got rid of the dishwasher that come with the house for another freezer.

FightingTheFoo · 05/05/2021 20:29

I see your two dishwashers... and raise you 4

I have two dishwashers! In my last house I had three Blush
I hope I will never be without at least two. I never have dirty dishes hanging around, there's always a dishwasher available

Do it!

GappyValley · 05/05/2021 20:31

I'd add a garbage disposal too! It's not great to send tons of stuff down it but all the gross little bits don't need to be cleaned out.
Already added! Between the Quooker cube and waste disposal, we lose one of the under sink cupboards but it’s worth it if I never have to scrape gunk out of plugs again!

Already well covered for fridge and freezer space so don’t need any more of that.

Still on the fence about the warming drawer though
DH thinks it’s mildly hilarious that we are considering a glorified hostess trolley...

We recently moved into a house which had 2 dishwashers and it has been life changing. One of them has broken down and the difference is ridiculous. We are a family of 5. When we re-do the kitchen, I'll definitely be putting 2 back in. It makes such a difference.

Duvetdweller · 05/05/2021 20:34

I wanted 2 dishwashers but the layout didn’t work with the plumbing - I have got 6 fridges though which is a tad excessive

Duvetdweller · 05/05/2021 20:35

2 warming drawers here - now they are a game changer

Stoptalkingtome · 05/05/2021 20:35

We've had a warming drawer in 2 of our houses and it's really handy. I'd have one again. Really good for big meals, Christmas and when one of us is late home for tea.

Stoptalkingtome · 05/05/2021 20:39

^ I don't mean we own loads of houses, we own one. We've moved a lot. Blush

irregularegular · 05/05/2021 20:40

Depends how many dishes you get through? I think as an average family of four there wouldn't be many occasions when the second dishwasher would be really useful, and it just takes up space otherwise. I think I'd end up being lazy and filling up the second dishwasher rather than emptying the first one. And then regretting it as there would be two dishwashers to empty which is even worse!

user159 · 05/05/2021 20:42

A friend of mine has two - one in the utility room and one in the kitchen. They had the space so why not? They do a lot of hosting (when allowed!)

irregularegular · 05/05/2021 20:42

And no, we don't normally have dirty dishes hanging around through only having one dishwasher. Put it on overnight, empty in the morning. No dirty dishes generated in the meantime. Occasionally it gets out of synch, but not often.

wurlycurly · 05/05/2021 20:48

I have one dishwasher but if I had a bigger kitchen I'd absolutely get tandem dishwashers. Yes, you lose cupboard space, but then do you even need to put away the clean stuff? You could just take clean stuff out as you go along. Genius. Don't hesitate

Wafflewombat · 05/05/2021 20:50

Yep, I have 2. I read on here it was a good idea & as mine was in the garage I added a second when we did the kitchen. It was useful the once we've had people over!

I'd do it again tho as the kitchen one is integrated & I'll take the heavily used one with me if I move.

TheKeatingFive · 05/05/2021 20:56

I have two dishwashers. It’s life changing. You won’t regret it.

And we’re just a family of four. But with good management it means you hardly ever have to actually unpack the ‘clean’ one in one go. It just happens through the day.

SellFridges · 05/05/2021 20:58

I’m definitely getting two when we do our kitchen. Who doesn’t need a cupboard that washes things?

MsFogi · 05/05/2021 20:59

If you have the space you should go for two dishwashers - my sister has two and it seems to work brilliantly. I take it you are also installing at least two ovens (a must as far as I am concerned).

ViceLikeBlip · 05/05/2021 21:09

First thoughts : this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of, just run the one dishwasher twice a day if you need to (or put it on again in the morning after having people for dinner etc), 2 dishwashers won't save you any work, you'll still have to put all the same items in a machine and take them out again.

Second thoughts after reading this thread: having two dishwashers is a proper genius move, and now I NEED another one. Mostly because of the constant flow aspect, not having to unload it all in one go first thing in the morning (I HATE this. I do it every single day, and every single day I HATE it!)

So yes, it turns out I would definitely sacrifice a useless cupboard for a "cupboard that washes things".

Unrelated - I also now need a warming drawer....
