First world problem alert 🚨

We are currently doing a once-in-a-lifetime kitchen extension and redesign.
This is the last part of the refurb of our forever family home which we bought as a bit of a wreck so very keen to get it right so I never have to have builders set foot in the house again..!

We have seen quite a few kitchen companies, and half of them have suggested getting 2 dishwashers, suggesting it’s up there with a boiling water tap as a family essential.

The company we’ve ended up going with for the kitchen was Team OneDishwasherOnly but I am now having buyers remorse and wondering if I should ask them to incorporate a second one into the design.
It would mean sacrificing some cupboard space, but I’m wondering if that’s worth it?

We are a family of 4, and love cooking, having people over, doing big roasts, so can envisage times when we would need both
But can also see that for the majority of the time, we wouldn’t

Arghhhh

Yeah get 2. Absolutely. Its your dream kitchen and lets face it if you dont ever use it (assuming integrated ?) No one would ever know anyway.
Unless that extra cupboard is vital to a certain layout/lack of space which im assuming it wont be with all you have going on!

You may regret buying 2 but you will absolutely regret not having 2 because you are already over thinking it!

Plus, it will be cheaper to have it done now in the refurb that trying to chase the same items in a few years time.

I have a teeny tiny house with a teeny tiny kitchen & I happily lost a cupboard to fit in just the one dishwasher. I can see the appeal of 2.

gospelsinger · 05/05/2021 12:28

I never knew 2 dishwashers was even a thing.

HouseyHouse21 · 05/05/2021 12:30

(Might have been better posting this in the Property section).

Yes, definitely get 2 - but speak to people who already have this setup, as you do need a system in place that everyone in the family can follow, e.g. a way of identifying which is clean / dirty. And it doesn't really take up extra space if you think about it, as you'd have used the space for storing those items anyway.

No that’s mental

Miasicarisatia · 05/05/2021 12:46

Surely the reason for two dishwashers isn't to do with the volume of washing-up, rather it is to do with optimising the unloading and unloading!

Onedropbeat · 05/05/2021 12:48

I’d rather have 2 slimline than one full size if I had to compromise

It means there’s never any overflow

cancancan · 05/05/2021 12:57

I'm leaning towards possibly having 2 😬

We just bought a new one as our old one died. But will be doing an extension this year and new kitchen and we would prefer an integrated dishwasher. So thinking the one we have now will get moved to the utility room for "overflow"

Would also like 2 washing machines!

Toomuchleopard · 05/05/2021 13:14

We have 2 fridge freezers built in. I definitely recommend that. We’re a family of 5 and the dishwasher is on 3 times a day so I get why you might want 2. You would have to be quite disciplined about how they were used so you don’t end up with 2 half full of dirty stuff all the time

Apileofballyhoo · 05/05/2021 13:30

I would if I could. I'd operate on a that one is dirty dishes, that one is clean dishes basis. I hate emptying the dishwasher and usually use the dishes out of it as I need them, just enjoying emptying the final ones after dinner in the evening so it can be loaded up again. If I've cooked on the hob the night before there's usually not much left, if I've baked or cooked something in the oven there'll be a few things. Only 3 of us here, so sometimes I use the half load function. Could probably use 2 slimline dishwashers if I had the 2 dishwashers option.

So instead of taking dishes out and putting them away, I'd just leave them in there and put dirty ones in the other dishwasher, once they were all used dirty ones would start to go back in. Not sure if I'd end up with clean ones in both and have to unload two dishwashers! And DH and DS would probably never get the system and would put dirty dishes in the wrong dishwasher.

Apileofballyhoo · 05/05/2021 13:32

Not sure where "enjoying" came from - I definitely do not enjoy emptying the bloody thing!

Cheerfulcharlie · 05/05/2021 13:37

I got 2 dishwashers installed and we're a family of 4 and use both every day. You never have to have dirty dishes piling up while it's on or you're waiting to empty it (although some training for some family members might be needed...). If I was going to do another kitchen, I would definitely get 2 if I could possibly fit them in.

2 sinks are incredibly useful too!

isthismylifenow · 05/05/2021 13:40

I really wouldn't give up cupboard space for a 2nd dishwasher.

It doesn't matter how many cupboards you have, you will never have enough.

So basically the 2nd dishwasher becomes storage as people tend to leave the dishes in either one, clean and not.

GillBiggeloesHair · 05/05/2021 13:48

Don't even have one, I feel like the poor relation now.

Ridgere · 05/05/2021 13:58

@gospelsinger

I never knew 2 dishwashers was even a thing.
Yeah me either and I know plenty of people with big families and/or new kitchens. I know people with two fridges, two freezers, but never known anyone to have two dishwashers. Never even thought about it being a thing.
GappyValley · 05/05/2021 14:04

So what I’m reading is that no one who has 2 dishwashers regrets the decision..?

We will have 2 ovens and 2 sinks already, but I’m thinking about how many times we have the dishwasher going with a sink full of dirty dishes ready to go, and I think it’s often enough to justify the second one.

The new design already gives us about 30% more cupboard space than previously, so i guess I can’t miss what I never have if we sacrifice a cupboard

Thanks Team2Dishwashers for getting me over the line!

Next question..! In the island (where the hob is) or near to the sinks..?

This is actually a really good point - if you don't have to compromise massively to get it, go ahead and get two. You can always remove one done the line if you want to.
Triffid1 · 05/05/2021 14:06

Next question..! In the island (where the hob is) or near to the sinks..?

I'd put them next to each other if I could. I could otherwise easily imagine myself getting annoyed as I go to one, only to realise it's full and have to swap to another. But that might just be me! Grin

Peachee · 05/05/2021 14:10

If anyone regrets having two I’ll take one off your hands.. one would be heavenly!!!! I’m so fed up of washing up!!!

isthismylifenow · 05/05/2021 14:10

Are two washing machines a thing too, as I have never heard of two dishwashers until now. Or two ovens. Except if you are a caterer of course. When else would you need two ovens?

HairyPits · 05/05/2021 14:13

My DP dreams of having 2 dishwashers - one empty to load with dirty stuff, then take the clean stuff straight out of the other one! (Some putting away would be needed, but not as much!)

pollyannaperspective · 05/05/2021 14:13

Ours are side by side, at right angle to sink and drainer, and across from the island - prep area as we have range cooker rather than separate hob and ovens. DH says don't forget a warming drawer.

TinaYouFatLard · 05/05/2021 14:13

100% get two dishwashers if you can.

My in-laws have two and they never have piles of overflow dishes waiting for the dishwasher to finish. We are a family of five and just doing a roast or big meal for us means I need more than one dishwasher load.

It’s on my kitchen wish list!

Cheerfulcharlie · 05/05/2021 14:14

Next question..! In the island (where the hob is) or near to the sinks..?

I would definitely put it next to a sink for emptying half glasses / cups (plus we rinse before loading).
I have both mine next to each other in the island, but I have one of the sinks in the island, hob is elsewhere.

grantoderek · 05/05/2021 14:17

We have 2 plus a live in housekeeper. Why would you not if you have space? The rule is you use it, you put in the dishwasher. Simple
