Arghhhhh.

Iv been doing keto for the last 4 weeks and have lost 25lb. I currently weigh 22stone and im 5ft9. I’m absolutely terrified that I’m going to be to heavy for the equipment!

But my 11yo ds has been asking to join so he has an induction booked for Wednesday with me.

I’m so nervous 😩

Contact the gym by phone before Wednesday and check any weight restrictions ahead of the day so you are prepared and not caught off guard or embarrassed on the day.
You're setting a great example for your child by going, try and be as positive as possible although I do understand your apprehension Thanks

LunaNorth · 03/05/2021 21:21

Good for you!

Jenda · 03/05/2021 21:22

I was a member of a large gym when I was not much lighter than you and it was never a problem. I had a consultation and it didn't even seem to be a consideration. Good for you. I know how scary it is but is really is so true what they say that everyone is too focused on themselves to look at your body. Enjoy!

WorriedMillie · 03/05/2021 21:22

Come on, OP, you’ve got this. Sending all the luck in the world Flowers

Ginandtonic4all · 03/05/2021 21:27

Wow. Same amount to loose as me. And I'm 5ft9. So we are in a similar situation. And I'm looking into gym membership. Keep this thread updated and let us know how you get on. Maybe we can be weight loss / gym going support for each other.

Deanefan · 03/05/2021 21:33

Aquacise is a great way to start if you haven’t exercised in a while. The water buoyancy means you don’t put as much weight on your joints. I used it to build some basic fitness before starting HIIT. Now after lockdowns starting again 🙄🤦‍♀️

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 03/05/2021 22:13

Thank you all! I’m a size 20/22 and feel ridiculous in the gym clothes I’ve bought 😩

I also have Lipodema so my legs are where my weight mostly comes from x

Go for it !

FightingTheFoo · 03/05/2021 23:37

Wishing you lots of luck! It can feel very rewarding when you're in a good habit with it.

Time2b33 · 03/05/2021 23:39

Good luck OP! 💪

Pinchoftums · 03/05/2021 23:39

You are an absolute superstar. Be upfront out of earshot of your son and explain you are worried. They will help. So impressed with you!

Torvean · 04/05/2021 02:37

Good luck. I hope its a really positive experience.

SunIsComing · 04/05/2021 06:23

Good for you! Well done!

rwalker · 04/05/2021 07:01

Nobody cares there every shape and size at our gym .

nancywhitehead · 04/05/2021 07:41

It's an amazing step you are taking going to the gym, well done!

I have been a regular gym-goer for a few years and have seen people of all shapes and sizes at my gym, people bigger than you. You will be OK but just make sure you ask the staff for help. They will be used to helping people like you as well as the fitness fanatics - gyms are very inclusive these days.

Deep breath and good luck! Let us know how it goes :)

Oh dear why do you feel ridiculous in your gym clothes? Are they too tight/ revealing?

I just wear loose jogging bottoms and a plain t-shirt. You need to feel OK in your clothes or it will add to your anxiety. Can you change them?

MindBodyChocolate · 04/05/2021 07:46

Hi @Thedarksideofthemoon30 - well done on getting the induction booked. I think you’ll be ok weight wise on the machines so try not to worry about that.

What gym wear do you have? You don’t have to wear tight fitting stuff - normal joggers / yoga pants are fine with a loose t shirt.

Take it slow and you’ll be fine. Good luck!

Sonofabiscuit · 04/05/2021 08:09

Proud of you op !!

bluelemming · 04/05/2021 08:12

Good for you OP. We're all rooting for you. Massive well done on your weight loss so far.

thebabessavedme · 04/05/2021 08:18

Good on you OP!, (you have made me feel very guilty, I REALLY need to get to a gym) As to size and equipment, my son-in-law is 18st of pure rugby muscle, a man mountain, I know he pounds the treadmill and uses the crosstrainers etc like a demon, I think you will be fine! Smile

Livpool · 04/05/2021 08:21

Well done OP.

I was given a few months free by being recommended by my doctor. Maybe see what they say?

I doubt you will be too heavy for the equipment but always worth asking

PatchworkElmer · 04/05/2021 08:22

Well done OP, hope it goes well today!

LagneyandCasey · 04/05/2021 08:25

There are absolutely all shapes and sizes at the gym and no one really takes any notice of each other, they're all focused on themselves. The induction will hopefully set your mind at rest. Staff will always be around to help. Wear comfy clothes, it doesn't have to be gym gear. Best of luck! Come back and let us know how it goes.

chillychicken · 04/05/2021 08:38

My advice would be to get a few PT sessions booked in - this will be something you can ask about at your induction. PT changed my life. I used to find going to the gym a chore and now I love it. He gave me confidence and knowledge that I wouldn’t have gained if I’d done it alone.

Be comfortable in what you’re wearing and don’t be afraid to ask a member of the gym staff for advice with setting up a machine or how to use it.

I hope you enjoy it Smile

MajorNeville · 04/05/2021 08:57

There are loads of people your size and both bigger and smaller than you, at my gym. No one bats an eye. On the clothes I'd just advise don't go for oversized shirts, they always emphasise you're trying to hide and look so uncomfortable.
