Self cleaning oven

I've never had an oven with this feature before. Is there anything in particular that I need to know about using it?

Can I leave the trays in so they clean too?

The kitchen and living room are open plan so can I do it while I'm in, with dogs here?

How the hell does this work?

3Britnee · 03/05/2021 13:50

From what I can gather from google, it heats up to seriously high temps and burns all the dirt away.

I might just keep scrubbing it. I got dishwasher tablets to scrub it with but they aren't doing a lot really. Not on the trays, anyway.

We have a neff with a self cleaning function. It takes about 3 hours and because it gets so hot it locks the oven shut, it stinks and does get quite smokey. Our manual says to remove trays and shelves and it needs a wipe over to remove the ash afterwards. There are 2 different cleaning functions on ours and one needs to have water put in the bottom of the oven whereas the other is a dry clean.
It might be worth googling your oven make and seeing if you can find the manual to check how your self clean option works.

SeventhRaccoon · 03/05/2021 13:59

Do you have the instructions, or can you Google the serial number? That will tell you about your specific model. For ours you remove all trays and are supposed to keep pets and children away. Do not keep scrubbing it if you have the option of the self cleaning function - what a waste! Shock It's incredibly easy to use and saves hours of labour! I LOVE ours.

Mr Muscle oven cleaner is great. I used to spray it thickly all over the shelves (shelves outside on the path on a dry day) and just leave it there for an hour. Does the bottom of saucepans too.

The oven itself? Well i never clean mine Blush The only time i had the same oven for more than 2 years i hired someone to come and clean it. I expected them to bring some amazing thing which went in the oven or paint on some amazing gunge .... no - a big burley bloke arrived, asked to borrow one of my dining room chairs and a big bowl of hot water and just sat in front of it and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed for hours BlushBlushShock

Our oven has this feature and it is brilliant but you have to remove trays, shelves, and the bits at the side which hold the shelves. Also clean off any loose bits with a cloth first. But it really is excellent

3Britnee · 03/05/2021 14:25

Ok thanks, I don't want to smoke myself and the dogs out so I'll just carry on scrubbing.

Mine doesn't generate any smoke

Billandben444 · 03/05/2021 16:25

My Zanussi doesn't smoke or smell but I open the window in case. It's a brilliant feature but you do have to unclip everything and clean those yourself. It tells me when it needs cleaning and this is more often than I would normally (obvs a slut). Google the manual for it but if you do decide to clean it yourself be very careful as anything abrasive damages the pyrolitic surface. Plenty of youtube vids.

ILoveMyMonkey · 03/05/2021 17:00

The smoking / smell may well be because I hadn’t cleaned it in over a year 🤣

Duckyneedsaclean · 03/05/2021 17:03

Mine doesn't smoke either. You have to remove the trays and just wipe a bit of ash off afterwards.

Honestly lifechanging.

LadyShort · 03/05/2021 17:50

Can I just add... Do not do what I did. Thought I would be clever and took out the glass panes in door of the oven before self cleaning it, so I could give them a good scrub while it was cleaning.

Resulted in all the trims around the door melting due to the high temperature and no protection, had to buy a new door!

TopoTip · 03/05/2021 22:08

I also have an oven with this feature. It's good. It basically burns off all the crap built up on the inside of the oven and you're left with a small pile of ash to wipe away at the end.

TopoTip · 03/05/2021 22:10

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to scrub mine (Zanussi) as it's coated with some special protection inside

Octopuscrazy · 03/05/2021 22:36

I have a bosch self clean. It's the best thing. Tiny bit of smoke and smell. Worse when the oven is more dirty. Don't think I will ever go back to scrubbing. I can't see the dials on yours properly but mine I put it on the clean function, then 1,2 or 3 depending on how dirty it is. All trays and rails have to come out. The door locks itself until the program is finished.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 03/05/2021 22:40

Don’t scrub it! You’ll remove the coating that self cleans
I leave the shelves in. If a bit smelly (due to dirt) I turn the extra to fan on for a bit
It’s genius

Marchitectmummy · 03/05/2021 22:40

Ours is Neff, it doesn't smoke at all, but I clean it often. I think the smoke will be burning residue animal fat.

Nothing to be left inside mine unless it is on specific feet to lift it off the bottom. Never tried to.

ChekhovsWorkshoppedShooter · 03/05/2021 22:43

I’ve got a Neff, it’s excellent. Just follow the instructions for yours - if you don’t have the manual then Google the serial number and it will be online somewhere.

Fiercestcalm · 03/05/2021 22:49

As others have said, remove everything inside the oven and I clean the glass before the cycle ( the pyro function on glass makes it smeary IMO)

I love pyro ovens, keep a window open and I always make sure I’m in the house when it cleans. Also worth making sure the oven is properly grubby, my instruction manual makes a big deal about this.

ImAncient · 03/05/2021 22:49

My last self clean - neff I could leave the sides in. This one neff I have to take the sides out.

Self cleaning oven is brilliant. Just brilliant. Smelly but brilliant.

Can you tell I love it!

artquejtion · 03/05/2021 22:59

Is it a pyrolytic cleaning oven ?

that's what I have and it doesn't smoke at all, door locks shut, it heats up to about 500deg, the kitchen does get really hot though. You don't leave the metal shelves in, but you can leave in enamelled ones, , I, unfortunately, left in my metal shelves and they are now anodised and not shiny sliver anymore. .

It really is an amazing feature, the oven looks like a new oven afterwards and you only have to wipe off a very fine layer of ash.

I love it.

GeidiPrimes · 03/05/2021 23:06

Fantastic invention. Make sure to take the racks out, otherwise they go dull/black. It's possible that you can leave the tray in, but check with the manual. There'll be a couple of spare brackets somewhere if you can.
